MSC Software: Product Brief - Patran 2012 - What s New PRODUCT BRIEF Patran 2012

PRODUCT BRIEF MSC Software: Product Brief - Patran 2012 - What s New Welcome to Patran 2012 The current release of Patran 2012 continues to build on groundwork laid in previous releases to provide enhanced user experience with an updated, user friendly user interface. In addition, improved nonlinear solver support and MSC Fatigue capabilities enable you to improve your designs and product durability. Ease of Use For the past few releases, ease of use has been a key focus area of Patran and this release is no different. In this release, a Model Browser Tree (MBT) has been introduced for easier model navigation. New singleclick options and selection options also help reduce the number of clicks and mouse travelcapability Improvements. Enhanced Nonlinear Setup Use of nonlinear analysis continues to grow rapidly in engineering community and Patran is keeping pace with new developments in solvers. Current release supports failure analysis methodologies like Cohesive Zone Modeling and Virtual Crack Closure Technique to help understand your designs better. In addition, enhancements to contact model set up and addition of new elements makes it easier to set up more complex nonlinear analyses within Patran Durability In order to help users address durability issues within the common environment of Patran, support for MSC Fatigue is being continuously improved. In addition to support for updated libraries, vibration fatigue is supported in this release. Patran 2012 is designed to improve user efficiency, better nonlinear analysis and solver support in order to help you design safer products more efficiently. We are confident that you will be pleased with the enhancements and the direction of product development in this release. Thank you very much for your continued support of Patran. The MSC Software Product team 2

MSC Software: Product Brief - Patran 2012 - What s New PRODUCT BRIEF Model Tree Browser To improve user productivity, Model Browser Tree (MBT) is introduced in Patran which helps reduce mouse clicks and traverses for common tasks. This also reduces the number of forms the user has to navigate to view database entries improving ease of use. With the MBT, users can easily see existing database entitites and perform actions to add, delete and modify entities through the model tree. Appearance Flexibility The visibility of Model Browser Tree can be customized based on user needs. Some of the parameters that can be customized include: Visibility: MBT can be made visible or hidden through an option to show/ hide. Background: The background of MBT can be made transparent or dockable. Location: By default, the tree is placed at top left of graphics viewport. However, user can move it anywhere on the viewport. It can be docked to left or right to the Patran viewport or can be maintained as a floating window. Size: Transparent tree can be resized for better visibility Configuration: Using configuration window, the text size, color and font, background color and other options can be customized Tree Control The tree widget displays database entities in tree hierarchy. In addition to displaying them, the MBT allows user to control them with the following functionalities. Post/unpost database entities on the model view. Currently, it is available with groups, LBCs and result type entities. Drag and drop support for certain tree items Context sensitive popup menu displayed by right mouse button click on selected tree items Collapse/Expand tree nodes to expand/collapse child items Context sensitive popup menus when user right mouse clicks over a tree item Tree Configuration Search through tree items using text labels Sort tree child items in alphabetical or creation order Filter display of specific items in the browser tree structure One Click Options Patran interface has been enhanced further to help users perform common tasks with fewer clicks. The One Click capability helps you perform tasks that in the past required multiple steps and several mouse clicks to be accessed either from right mouse button menu or from a new icon improving modeling efficiency. One-Click Display Toolbar New Right Mouse Button Options and Select Filter File/Import functionality and Tab application in Skin mode are now available in Right Mouse Button menu. These options can be accessed with the right mouse button away from any graphical entities in the graphics screen. These additions provide easier and faster access to more commonly used menus. A new picking filter has been added to select all entities in the model with one click. Another button to clear all selected entities is also available. PRODUCT BRIEF MSC Software: Product Brief - Patran 2012 - What s New Enhanced Nonlinear Solver Support Patran continues to improve its support for nonlinear model creation and postprocessing. This release includes support for failure analysis, contact capabilities and new nonlinear elements. Cohesive Zone Modeling (CZM) CZM is a technique used to simulate delamination in composite materials or crack growth in structures. The implementation of CZM in Marc and MSC Nastran is based on a library of special elements called interface elements and a new material to characterize the interface behavior. These interface elements, which could be of zero thickness, are typically placed in between standard elements where delamination or crack growth is expected to take place. The cohesive zone can be modeled with linear and quadratic 2D and 3D-elements that are supported by MSC Nastran and Marc. New Nonlinear Elements MSC Nastran and Marc preferences now support newer element types available in the solvers. The new elements supported by MSC Nastran preferences include: One-dimensional bar and beam elements, 2D thin and thick shells, membrane elements, 2D solid element with plane strain, plane stress and axisymmetric formulation Interface elements for cohesive zone modeling (2D and 3D) 3D solid elements, including solid-shells Marc preference supports the new interface and solid-shell elements to help you analyze failure and manufacturing problems with improved accuracy. Crack Growth Simulation Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT) VCCT is a simple, but general way to evaluate energy release of a crack and simulate crack growth. The implementation of VCCT is achieved via new Patran Loads/BCs called Cracks and is implemented to support both Marc and MSC Nastran preferences. The crack growth is achieved either through remeshing or release tyings such as with glued contact or other types of MPCs, both of which are supported by Patran. List of Elements Segment-to-Segment Contact Patran now supports the segment-to-segment (STS) contact detection method available in MSC Nastran and Marc. This method improves the accuracy over traditional node-to-segment (NTS) contact detection method by providing smoother contact stresses and is suited to both lower and higher-order elements. STS method also overcomes the limitations of NTS method and its concept of master segments and slave nodes, thus eliminating the need to pay close attention to contact body ordering. VCCT STS Contact Detection 4

MSC Software: Product Brief - Patran 2012 - What s New PRODUCT BRIEF Improved Contact Table Support Contact tables are used by Marc and MSC Nastran to customize contact parameters and detection between contact pairs. Several new contact table features are supported in this release. These include: Contact boundary options: Edge-to-edge contact set up and analysis is now possible allowing users to set up contact boundary options like shell edge-to-edge, shell edge-to-solid face and beam to solid face. All contact boundary options also support moment carrying glue simplifying contact between various element types. Breaking glue support: It is now possible to break up the glued connection between contact bodies using a stress criterion. When a node is released due to breaking glued contact, it changes status from being glued to standard contact permitting separation and friction Enhanced MSC Fatigue Support When structures undergo continuous vibrations, which could be deterministic or random, they are often analyzed in frequency domain. A Power Spectral Density Function (PSDF or PSD) is the most common way of representing the loadings and responses in the frequency domain. The vibration fatigue module of MSC Fatigue can perform fatigue analysis using either direct external response PSDs calculated by the stress solver or PSDs calculated within the Vibration module. MSC Fatigue uses S-N method to predict life and a single shot analyzer that accepts a measured or analytically determined stress response PSD. Marc Contact Table Power Spectral Density Function 5
