JOB TITLE: RESPONSIBLE TO: Full-time Learning Support Assistant Foundation Studies (Term-time) Fixed Term until 6 th July 2018 Head of Department JOB ROLE: To enable students with a range of additional learning support needs to access the curriculum as fully as possible, through a planned programme of learning support in order that they participate in all aspects of College life, supporting them in achieving their learning goals and potential. MAIN DUTIES: To provide educational and mentoring support for students with additional support needs, including English and maths needs and/or disabilities, emotional and behavioural difficulties. To work under the direction of Lecturers to support students with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities (LDD) in order to access and succeed on programmes of study. To support students in a variety of ways according to need which may include: Working with students inside and outside of the classroom environment and in the Learning Centre Monitoring and supervising individuals or small groups of students Assist with record keeping associated with individual students Assist with equipment used by individual students including practical Assisting learners with planning and structuring written and practical assignments Preparing for examinations English, Mathematics and ICT skills Supporting the assessment on vocational programmes Preparing/ adapting learning materials and equipment when required Supervising students on educational visits and work placements Supporting students in using specialist equipment and resources to assist learning Assisting students with reading and note taking and to transcribe the student s work where appropriate, and assist with preparation of portfolios, files etc. SPECIFIC DUTIES: To support students with identified additional support needs in the undertaking of written and practical work in a group or one to one situation To assist in the supervision of students moving around campus (including break times where necessary).

To keep detailed and accurate records of student support for ALS audit records and the student s individual Learning Plan/ Support Plan; regular feedback to Head of ALS on the effectiveness of ALS support provided. To establish ways of communicating with the student(s) that recognises and respects their individual and particular needs and take a proactive approach to assisting and advising them with their course commitments To facilitate and encourage the social and emotional development of students by intervening where necessary to reinforce positive behavioural patterns both inside and out of the classroom; to provide individual supervision where necessary To take part in specialised training and assist in the dissemination through the curriculum teams and undertake CPD activities relevant to the post To work as part of the ALS team and contribute to the planning, implementation and review of the service; to contribute to self-assessment and continuous improvement strategy To maintain Health and Safety and College regulations and to meet College standards at all times COMMON RESPONSIBILITIES: In addition to the specific tasks which distinguish one job from another, and the terms and conditions in contracts of employment, all staff have common responsibilities which are also integral to their terms of employment. STATEMENT OF MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The main Conditions of Service applicable to this post are set out in the Professional Contract of Employment at the Berkshire College of Agriculture. SALARY The salaries for this position will be Scale Point 18 currently 8,766 per annum (a prorata of 17,587), pro rata for term-time employment. Your salary will be paid monthly. As it is a condition that your annual leave is taken outside of term time, your salary includes an element to compensate for that fact in a higher salary rate. HOURS OF WORK You will be expected to be at your normal place of work or engaged in any approved activity for a minimum of 22.2 hours per week, term-time Fixed term until 6 th July 2018. However you will be expected to work such hours as are reasonably necessary for the proper performance of your professional duties and responsibilities. On occasions, you may be asked to work additional hours by agreement for which time off in lieu maybe granted. CONTINUOUS SERVICE Your continuous service dates from the commencement of this contract with the College except where periods of previous service with other local authorities and related employers are allowed to count as continuous employment for specified purposes in the Professional Contract, the Pension Scheme and other agreements. HOLIDAYS It is a condition that your annual leave shall be taken outside of term time i.e. Christmas, Easter and Half Term breaks, your salary includes an element to compensated for that fact i.e. a higher hourly rate PROBATIONARY PERIOD The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a 6 months probationary period. REVIEW PERIOD You will be required to participate in a performance review scheme approved by the college. PENSIONS This post falls within the scope of the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). The LGPS is contracted out of the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme. It follows that, if you choose to participate in it, a contracting out certificate under the Social Security Pensions Act 1975 will be in force in respect of your employment. Should you choose not to join the LGPS, you must participate in the State pension scheme

or take out a personal pension. If you are in part-time employment you will need to elect for your service to be pensionable. MEDICAL The post holder will be required to complete a medical form and if appropriate undertake a medical examination. Confirmation of the appointment will be conditional upon this being satisfactory. In addition, any current or recent medical problems must be detailed on the form of application. CAR USAGE It is a requirement of the post that you hold a current UK driving licence. The College runs a number of vehicles which are normally used for official journeys. Should you be required and authorised to use your car in the course of official duties, then a mileage allowance will be payable in accordance with current College rates. This allowance may be varied or withdrawn at the discretion of the College during the course of your employment. DISCLOSURE & BARRING SERVICE The College will undertake the appropriate background checks with the Disclosure & Barring Service. You will be requires to comply with College procedures for obtaining a Disclosure certificate. If you currently subscribe to the DBS Update Service you will be required to show the HR Department your DBS Certificate. CHILDCARE VOUCHERS The College is a member of an approved childcare voucher scheme, which is open to all employees subject to their application fulfilling the criteria of the scheme. CHILDREN S NURSERY A private sector partner (Busy Bees) runs an 80 place Children s Nursery on the College campus, open to members of the public, staff and students. TERMINATION OF EMPLOYMENT The period of notice which you are required to give to terminate your employment is set out in the Professional Contract and is currently two calendar months. UNION MEMBERSHIP The College, as your employer, believes in the principle of discussion and agreement in its approach to industrial relations. You have the right to join a trade union and to take part in its activities. AMENDMENTS The Corporation reserves the right to amend or terminate any working arrangements, agreements or schemes which are included in your Contract of Employment, either by consent (individually or collectively) or by termination as provided for within these arrangements, agreements or schemes in which case such provisions will cease.
