A shrinkage factor of 25% was used in the calculations. Final payment will be made based upon actual measured quantities of the work as completed. d) 41 Gravel Surfacing (Supply and Place) Upon completion of the work all sections of roadway being constructed under this contract shall be gravelled. Gravel shall be applied in two separate lifts: The first lift, upon completion of a section of roadway, and the second lift, once the first lift has been compacted into the subgrade surface. Gravel surfacing shall be applied at a rate of 600 m 3 /km of Des. 4, Class 40 road gravel on the first lift (50 mm thick), 420 m 3 /km of Des. 4, Class 25 on the final lift (35 mm thick) and 12 m 3 of Des. 4, Class 25 per approach (50 mm thick). The initial lift and the final lift of gravel shall be compacted into the subgrade surface. Initially the gravel shall be spread uniformly across the subgrade surface. The first lift of gravel will then be scarified to a depth of 100 mm below top of finished subgrade and mixed uniformly. Water shall be applied to the surface until acceptable moisture content is reached, as directed by the Consultant. The gravel shall then be compacted into the subgrade surface by means of pneumatic tired or vibratory smooth drum compaction equipment. The second lift will then be placed, and shaped to the specified cross section. Payment for loading, hauling, placing, spreading, watering and compacting of the surface gravel on the first lift will be made at the unit price bid per cubic metre for Gravel Surfacing - Des. 4, Class 40. Payment for loading, hauling, placing, spreading, watering and compacting of the surface gravel on the second lift and approaches will be made at the unit price bid per cubic metre for Gravel Surfacing - Des. 4, Class 25.
