Corporate General Specification Corp. Package Engineering St. Paul, MN 55144 Document Information Reference ID Issue Date 10/16/2006 Status Approved Description CGS 123 Packaging and Palletizing of Packaging Supplies for Alternate ID CGS 123 Delivery to 3M Warehouses Superseding ID Superseded By Issue Category Other Author Jill Buss Reason for Issue Initial transfer to IPM. See page 2 for details of changes. Primary Contact Nathan Kopaczewski Page 1

Description: Packaging and Palletizing of Packaging Supplies for Delivery to 3M Warehouses Specification No.: 123 Supersedes Issue: 12/22/2003 Owner: Nate Kopaczewski Change Record: Changed owner SCOPE: This Corporate General Specification states the preparation of delivery requirements for packaging supplies sent to 3M Company. 1.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 1.1 This Corporate General Specification shall not replace the supplier s responsibility to prepare their product for delivery so that it will arrive at its destination free of damage and by the most economical method. 1.2 This specification shall supplement the 3M item specification. 1.3 Order of Precedence Individual item specifications may reference this document. In the event that a requirement on the individual item specification contradicts a requirement in this document, the item specification requirement will take precedence over any contradicting requirement found between documents. 1.4 Palletizing 1.4.1 North American Pallet Requirements: All packaging supplies must be shipped to 3M on a 3M Packaging Engineering specified pallet. The 3M 48" x 42" pallet specification for units loads under 1400 pounds is 34-7000-8331-3. For unit loads in excess of 1400 pounds, use 3M 48" x 42" specified pallet 34-7000-8330-5. Pallets must be manufactured and marked exactly to the requirements stated in the specification. Variation against item specification may result in rejection of delivery. (Note: In special cases, an individual 3M location may require use of a pallet other than 34-7000-8331-3 or 34-7000-8330-5. In that case, the part number for the alternate 3M Package Engineering pallet specification needs to be stated in a 3M Sourcing Operations contract or an individual 3M purchase order.) 1.4.2 International solid wood pallet requirements: If item is to be exported, solid wood item must meet IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) requirements. If item is to be exported to Australia, wood packaging must meet requirements of 3M Corporate General Specification 166. 1.4.3 Pallet Overhang: Receiving product overhanging the pallet is not desired by 3M. In situations where it is necessary to overhang the pallet, the maximum allowable overhang for a 48 x 42 pallet footprint is 1 ½ in the 42 direction and 3 in the 48 direction. The maximum allowable footprint including overhang is 54 x 45. Before implementing a pallet pattern that has an overhang, the product characteristics, protective packaging, and unit load design must be evaluated to prevent transit damage. 1.4.4 Unit Load Height: Maximum unit load height, including pallet, is not to exceed 48. Page 2

1.5 Unitizing 1.5.1 Definition: A unitized load is used principally for knocked-down corrugated containers and similar items not otherwise overpacked. Odd shaped, die-cut pieces and/or displays may not be practical to unitize. Unitizing consists of bundles baled between sheets of corrugated board without pallet. Corrugated board of at least 200# test shall cover the entire bottom and top surface of the unit load and extend over all edges as shown in the drawing below. The entire assembly is held firmly with four straps of polyester strapping 1/2" x.020". Place corrugated pads under straps to prevent indenting of containers. Unitized load shall be placed on 3M pallets for shipment to 3M plants. If items have been "unitized", the requirement for banding to a pallet is at the shipper's discretion. Severe underhang may warrant unstable double decking and require banding to the pallet. In the special circumstance where very large corrugated items exceed the 43" x 54" maximum, items must be unitized and a pallet is not to be used. 1.5.1.1 Dimensions: Maximum width of unitized items = 45 Maximum length of unitized items = 54 Maximum height of unitized items = 43 1.6 Placards for Unit Loads 1.6.1 One placard shall be attached on fork opening end of unit load, upper right-hand corner. Page 3

2.0 BUNDLING AND CONTAINMENT REQUIREMENTS 2.1 Corrugated Fiberboard - Containers, Pads, Die-Cuts, etc. 2.1.1 The following schedules shall apply to determine the number of containers per bundle and stack height of various bundle quantities in A, B, and C flute. This chart is based on a maximum weight of 37 pounds per bundle. In some instances, particularly boxes of under five square feet blank area, other factors such as box dimensions and springiness determine the number that can be efficiently tied. Corrugated Containers or Pads Maximum Number per Bundle Based on Weight Page 4

2.2 Folding Cartons, Displays and Boxboard Items 2.2.1 Similar items shall be packed into corrugated shipping containers. Containers shall be sufficiently strong as to withstand double stacking of full pallet loads. The contents shall be solidly packed and all void space shall be filled with corrugated pads or other similar firm filler material. Items shall be packed into the containers on edge unless otherwise specified. The outside length and width of containers shall be of a modular size whenever possible so that a quantity of containers will exactly fit the length 48" and width 42" dimensions of 3M standard pallets. 2.2.2 Limitation on weight Weight per bundle or container shall not exceed 37 pounds. - - - ** End of Document ** Page 5
