Next Generation Financial Planning Migration to Cognos TM1 For internal use only

Introduction Deloitte s TM1 upgrade methodology Highlights Why IBM Cognos TM1 upgrade? Fast In-Memory OLAP technology Supports near real-time financial planning and reporting Flexible to accommodate change Lower cost of ownership 2 Today s fi nance organizations are under pressure to deliver more guidance and direction for running the business and, at the same time, to be more effi cient and cost effective. To do this, they need a fl exible planning and reporting process that can support in-fl ight reporting that will combine fi nancial metrics, operational metrics and business drivers. The path to getting there is not easy. Many enterprises are working to streamline their fi nancial planning processes and have achieved varying degrees of success. Some companies still live in a cumbersome multi-tool and manual world, struggling with collection and presentation of combined fi nancial and operational KPIs and metrics. Others have begun a fi nance analytics modernization journey and achieved operational effi ciencies by implementing fi nancial analytics solutions. But they too still struggle with trade-offs due to product and system constraints. Deloitte s experience has shown that a fi nance analytics solution based on IBM Cognos TM1 can provide fi nance organizations with the ability to improve their fi nancial planning process allowing near real-time aggregation of plan data, providing deeper visibility into underlying business drivers for analysis, and helping fi nance users spend more time on analysis using advanced data analysis tools. It can also help them improve their fi nancial closing and management reporting processes. While any organization can improve their processes by moving to an IBM Cognos TM1 solution, organizations already using an IBM Cognos Enterprise Planning platform can also benefi t from upgrading to an IBM Cognos TM1 platform. As used in this document, Deloitte means Deloitte LLP. Please see www.deloitte.com/us/about for a detailed description of the legal structure of Deloitte LLP and its subsidiaries. Highlights Tested Upgrade Methodology Use of design and development accelerators no need to re-invent the wheel Application of standard methods Focus on the entire solution not individual components Mitigate operational risk and manage cost Deloitte provides a TM1 upgrade evaluation method with an implementation methodology specifi cally tailored to the conversion of applications from Cognos Enterprise Planning to Cognos TM1. These methods are based on several effective migrations to Cognos TM1 and are designed to mitigate clients concerns around cost, timelines, operational risk, and end-user training. The methodology utilizes several key design and development accelerators to streamline implementations while reducing risk. Deloitte s TM1 conversion methodology includes conversion of Cognos Planning models, associated Cognos BI reporting, meta data management and data movement routines to enhance the end-to-end planning and reporting solution. Deloitte has embedded pre-designed templates, design accelerators, development code libraries, and testing routines in the methodology. And the use of design patterns, supported by a code library, addresses common functionality used in Cognos Planning that needs to be managed by upgrading to Cognos TM1. These well-defi ned methods accelerate design and provide consistency in code, which reduces implementation timelines and maintenance costs in the long run. Next Generation Financial Planning 3

Case studies Case 1: Driving exceptional performance improvements in a Global Planning environment The Consumer Products business division of a large Media and Entertainment client with a global presence in over 100 countries engaged Deloitte to assess their planning infrastructure in Cognos Planning and address the following challenges: Data Latency: Operating in multiple time zones, international users faced signifi cant challenges due to lengthy reporting data refreshes that took over 2-3 hours to complete. Planning Flexibility: As a rapidly growing business, acquisitions and organization changes were diffi cult to incorporate and implement in the planning process in a short time. Customization of planning views without IT involvement was not possible. Maintenance effort: Lack of detailed data visibility in the Cognos Planning 8.3 tool constrained reconciliations, increased the number of data maps and data movement components, and made the solution diffi cult to maintain. Deloitte performed an architectural quality assessment, provided a migration plan, and performed a TM1 upgrade for the fi nancial planning, reporting and analytics platform, which resulted in signifi cant end-user cycle time performance improvements and solution maintenance simplifi cation. Case 2: Driving process standardization and simplifying end user interfaces A large client s Interactive Media division, which produced entertainment content across various interactive media platforms, engaged Deloitte to assist in addressing the following challenges in their Cognos Planning based solution in an effort to improve their ability to support growth and changes to the business organization: Ineffective financial information systems: Lack of a single repository for disparate data sources; lack of proper automated data, cleansing and controls; and an overly complex, unreliable platform that lacked a scalable design. Limited financial reporting and analytics capabilities: Inconsistent reporting structures and poor data defi nition; lack of cross-organization insights into key business drivers; and limited ability to predict forecast accuracy and de-risk business plans. User driven planning interface: Business wanted an Excel-like front end to planning cubes. The client s migration to an IBM Cognos TM1 platform assisted them in their efforts to improve planning processes and standardize data structures. 4 Next Generation Financial Planning 5

IBM Cognos TM1 Benefit Opportunities The following benefi ts resulted from the migration to Cognos TM1: Feature Faster in-memory OLAP engine Business driven modeling Flexible end-user interface Cost reduction through simpler technology environment Benefit Opportunities Highly-scalable reporting cubes with greater than 2GB and capable of holding multiple versions with calculation times that were acceptable to the business in near real time Quicker cube refreshes; Reporting and planning in a single, integrated TM1 set of models Full P&L hierarchy, providing greater visibility to actuals Alternate hierarchies available for ad-hoc analysis Common budget and forecast models for easier maintenance and consolidation Ability to perform detailed what-ifs Excel-based user interface for fi nance users; Web-based user interface for submissions End users can create views in TM1 using subsets and nesting 30% reduction in business cycle duration and a 10x improvement in consolidated analysis from days to minutes 50% reduction in number of system components 6 Next Generation Financial Planning 7
