Solutions for sustainable WATER Management

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH Challenge: THE GLOBAL WATER CRISIS The world is increasingly turning its attention to the issues of water scarcity, water risk and water pollution. Water scarcity poses as a fundamental challenge to economic and social development in many countries. By 2030 over a third of the world s population will be living in river basins that will have to cope with significant water stress. The global overall gap between water supply and demand is estimated at 40%. Currently: 15% of the world s population (1.1 billion people) has no access to clean drinking water 40% of the world s population (2.6 billion people) has no access to sanitation services 80% of diseases in developing countries caused by unclean water Irrigation consumes increasingly large water volumes Water is becoming scarcer due to population growth, increasing consumption and climate change The availability of water resources is becoming a top of priority for governments, businesses and civil society organisations around the world. The lack of water resources in sufficient quality and quantity is very often a major bottleneck for development. It is water that is running through the veins of our economies.
