SECTION 09 65 40 PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes stage floor covering. 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. 1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide products identical to those tested for fire-exposure behavior per test method indicated by a testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. 1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Store floor coverings and installation materials in dry spaces protected from the weather, with ambient temperatures maintained within range recommended by manufacturer, but not less than 50 deg F or more than 90 deg F. Store rolls upright. 1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Maintain temperatures within range recommended by manufacturer, but not less than 70 deg F or more than 85 deg F Insert temperature, in spaces to receive flooring during the following time periods: 1. 60 hours before installation. 2. During installation. 3. 48 hours after installation. B. After post-installation period, maintain temperatures within range recommended by manufacturer, but not less than 55 deg F or more than 95 deg F. C. Close spaces to traffic during floor covering installation. D. Close spaces to traffic for 48 hours after floor covering installation. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 HARDBOARD FLOOR COVERING A. Available Products: Subject to compliance with requirements, products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Masonite Industries, Inc. 2. Or equal. B. Fiberboard Panels: Masonite Panel 1. Thickness: 1/4 inch. 2. Tempered both sides. C. Sheet Size: 4 feet by 8 feet. D. Adhesive: 1. Loctite PL Premium Construction Adhesive which is a one component, polyurethane based, moisture-curing adhesive at existing concrete slab. E. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: 1. Critical Radiant Flux Classification: Class I, not less than 0.45 W/sq. cm per ASTM E 648. F. Paint: 1. Paint finish of floor shall be of Satin black theatrical paint: Rosco Toughprime or BREAKTHROUGH by Vanex. No substitutions. G. Thermoset Rubber Base: 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Burke Mercer Flooring Products, Division of Burke Industries Inc. b. Roppe Corporation, USA. 2. Product Standard: ASTM F 1861, Type TS (rubber, vulcanized thermoset), Group I (solid, homogeneous). 3. Thickness: 0.125 inch (3.2 mm). 4. Height: 4 inches (102 mm). 5. Lengths: Coils in manufacturer's standard length. 6. Outside Corners: Job formed. 7. Inside Corners: Job formed. 8. 2.2 SUB-FLOOR A. Existing. 2.3 INSTALLATION MATERIALS A. Trowelable Leveling and Patching Compounds: Latex-modified, portland cement based or blended hydraulic cement based formulation provided or approved by floor covering manufacturer for applications indicated. B. Wood filler: Abatron WoodEpox or equal. C. Screws: countersunk phillips head screws, zinc coated, #8 1 inch. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Floor shall not be installed until the room is enclosed and the HVAC system is operational. Wood sub floor materials shall be acclimated. Top layer hardboard shall be leafed out flat in single sheets laid in place unfastened for a period of 60 hours minimum before fastening. No exceptions. B. Examine substrates, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances, moisture content, and other conditions affecting performance. 1. Verify that finishes of substrates comply with tolerances and other requirements specified in other Sections and that substrates are free of cracks, ridges, depressions, scale, and foreign deposits that might interfere with adhesion of floor coverings. 2. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Use trowelable leveling and patching compound to fill cracks, holes, and depressions in concrete substrates and epoxy wood filler in wood substrates. B. Grind smooth and flat to prepare concrete floor so glue will stick as required by the adhesive manufacturer. C. Remove existing muslin theatrical ground cloth. D. Remove all staples from the wood holding ground cloth to the stage floor. E. Removing old scenic show items installed into the floor and patch floor with the same existing wood fully supported. F. G. Precise cuts around floor pockets, trap floor platforms, orchestra pit, and other items at edges. H. The hardboard at the wings on either side downstage of the proscenium will require to be glued to the existing concrete fllor for a smooth transition from side stage wing to stage floor and orchestra lift. I. Repair, patch, level and sand the entire plywood subfloor to achieve flat, regular, quiet floor, level to 1/8 in 10-0. J. Top of floor box shall be flush with top of new hardboard. K. Top of box shall be black. L. Move floor coverings and installation materials into spaces where they will be installed at least 60 hours in advance of installation. 3.3 INSTALLATION A. Top Layer 1. Layout: a. Install for simple individual sheet replacement in uncut 4 x 8 sheets, only cut to fit as required at sides of room. After acclimation as specified, fasten with 1/8 gaps around all sides. b. Top layer shall be laid out with a 4 foot edge on the centerline between the edges of a stage proscenium and an 8 foot edge on plaster line (the back side of the proscenium arch). Sheets shall run with long edge parallel to proscenium wall. All seams shall line up. Refer to enlarged floor plan drawing. c. Floor assembly shall be cut to allow for 1 inch of expansion at all edges. 2. Installation at wood subfloors: a. Countersunk phillips head screws +/-12 o.c., 2 inside edges (except at walls) and on centerline of each sheet. b. Screws shall be countersunk using pre-drilled counter sunk holes. Selfcountersinking screws shall not be acceptable. c. Screw hole to be countersunk so that screw heads are flush with the surface, and no material mushrooms above the surface. d. Inset screws 4 at walls so they are not covered by the wall base. e. Use of glue for top layer is prohibited. f. Floor Pockets: cut hardboard at hinged door of stage lighting floor pockets. Attach hardboard with construction adhesive to the hinged door with cable holes cut out. g. Cut hardboard sheet 1/8 from all baseboards at stage walls. 3. Installation at concrete subfloor: a. Glue hardboard with adhesive as specified to concrete floor. b. Top of hardboard must be level to new hardboard screwed down to the stage floor. 4.
