Job Purpose To support functions within Information Services with specific responsibilities for the development, integration and support of key business applications. 3. Relationships Responsible to: Business Applications Manager 4. Main Activities ii. iii. iv. i. To participate as a team member in the full scope of the role assigned to the Business Applications Group, including: Requirements analysis, specification, procurement, integration, implementation, operation and customisation (where required) of purchased business applications for the management and administration of University wide business Full software life-cycle for in-house development of business applications, including analysis of business processes, database design and development, quality assured software development and compatibility with e-learning systems and standards Administration of business applications systems Business applications software licence management Development of business reports Data transfers (inc. statutory returns and ID/account mgt related) Business applications security (inc. related policies, coordination of investigations and reporting) Development, testing and implementation (as required) of business applications disaster recovery plans Advice and support of customers (in relation to the above) Documentation and staff development To provide advanced technical advice and assistance to authorised users of Information Services. To make initial diagnosis of any malfunctioning of equipment or software, and report to your senior, or liaise with other staff and external service organisations as required. To monitor the use of computer-related equipment and software by users, and assist with measures to counter irresponsible use. To undertake continuous personal development particularly to maintain current awareness of relevant technologies and issues for the role. To carry out the functions of other staff within Information Services, as required, in the event of staff absences from time to time. To participate in a range of IS services and activities to support the business, teaching, learning and research activities of the University. To collaborate with other IS staff and teams to ensure shared objectives are achieved, and to foster and promote close working relationships. To participate in the progression and satisfactory resolution of user requests for assistance via the Service Desk management system. To assist in the operation of the service including such matters as routine enquiries and using appropriate methods of referral. To undertake any other reasonable duties as may be required by the Director of Information Services or the Associate Director, Information Technology 5. Person Sought Essential Criteria: GCSE, ONC or equivalent and/or practical experience of IT or Information Systems Graduate/HND in Information Technology or Business Information Systems or the equivalent professional experience of IT or Information Systems Advanced level expertise relevant to the University corporate information systems and software platforms Key skills in the following areas: Database design and development (including SQL experience); Object oriented Java programming (including Java Enterprise Edition 5, JSF, JPA); Web development (including HTML, XML, Web services); Business Intelligence/Reporting; and requirements engineering along with systems analysis and design. Experience of business process analysis and development, and application procurement, development, implementation and operation Previous experience of working in a service environment Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) Excellent customer support experience and understanding Ability to prioritise tasks and to deliver consistently under pressure Ability to deal with difficult customers Effective team player Flexible approach Self motivation Commitment to the University s mission and delivery of the University Plan A willingness to engage in a structured induction programme as a start to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) at the University

Special Conditions This post is permanent. The appointment will be based at the Stoke Campus but as Information Services provides a service to all campuses of the University and some external sites, the postholder may be required to work at another location as the need arises. General Terms and Conditions of Service for Staff Appointment to the University The University is an independent Statutory Higher Education Corporation. As such the Board of Governors of the University is the employer, and is responsible for determining the employment policy, pay and conditions of service of all its employees. The agreed terms and conditions for all staff are set out in the University's terms and conditions of service. In addition your attention is drawn to the following general points: Medical Clearance The appointment is subject to satisfactory medical screening, which normally consists of completion of a confidential questionnaire. Eligibility to Live and Work in the UK In line with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006, documentation is required to confirm that employees are eligible to live and work in the UK. Any offer of employment is subject to this documentation being provided. CRB Clearance Where indicated in the job description an offer of employment will be subject to a satisfactory response to a check of criminal records. Qualifications New employees will be required to produce evidence of qualifications which are deemed essential for the post, as set out in the job description. Pension Contributions All members of staff are eligible to contribute to the relevant occupational Pension Scheme which is either the Local Government Pension Scheme or Teachers Pension Scheme, both of which are final salary schemes. Staffordshire University as the employer also contributes to each scheme. Payment of Salary Salary is payable monthly in arrears, normally on the last Wednesday of each month. Payment is made by direct credit to a recognised bank or building society account.
