Taking a Shortcut by Using Hot Melt Adhesives Pressure sensitive hot melt adhesives (PSA) tapes are widely used in the domestic appliances industry for quick attachment of decorative panels, touch screens, covers, trims and many other applications. Sika believes that there is a more cost efficient solution to tapes by removing the carrier and applying the hot melt adhesive directly to the components. This has several technical advantages and brings significant cost savings: Manual or fully automated application is possible by elimination of the release paper. The adhesive still allows repositioning within the open time, parts can be moved after assembly. Opens up opportunities to use reactive hot melt adhesive that react with moisture to form durable high strength bonds, even in warm environments. Liquid hot melt can be applied in any bead shape and on any substrate geometry, giving unparalleled design freedom. In some cases, the adhesive can be foamed up to 60% to reduce the material cost further. Application Examples Bonding of metals and plastics that are exposed to higher temperature First fixation for immediate transport Seam sealing for refrigerator Assembly joints of air filters PP components without surface preparation General sealing and bonding application on wide range of substrates such as treated metal, plastics etc. Counter weight bonding for washing machine Stiffening of housing Sealing of refrigerator and freezer Stiffening the housing of washing machine, oven, refrigerator etc. Sealing of seams or joints for sheet metal assembly work prior to powder coating oven 5

One Component Versus two Component Adhesives The chemical reaction in a one component adhesive is initiated by moisture, taken either from the substrate where the adhesive is applied, or from the atmospheric air. The adhesive bead starts to cure from the outside at a typical speed of 3 to 5 mm per day, depending on ambient conditions. This process can be accelerated by applying heat or extra moisture. Two component adhesives start curing when mixed together and the speed of this reaction can be tailored to suit almost any particular process need. Fast assembly lines will use extremely fast curing systems, while manual or semi automated operations will use products with longer process time to minimize the risk of wasting adhesive. The decision whether to use a one component or a two component adhesive depends on many different parameters. Sika can assist to evaluate your production requirements and helps you select the most cost effective solution. Two Component Adhesives Fast curing, parts can be moved within seconds. Process speed predictable and constant. Mixing with automatic equipment required. One Component Adhesives Curing speed depends on ambient conditions, climate chamber may be required. Suitable for discontinous operations. No mixing required. Application Examples Glass to metal, plastic frame bonding Ceramic cooktop bonding Sealing and bonding of dishwasher housing Metal and plastic brackets on decorative panel Formed-in-Place-Gasket (FIPG) material for flange sealing, e. g. on transmissions, compressors and pumps General sealing and bonding application on wide range of substrate such as metal, powder coats, plastics etc. with minimal surface pre-treatment Bonding of decorative and front panel Stiffening of housing Sealing of refrigerator and freezer Bonding of metals, glass, plastics, brackets on panels, displays and wherever strong bond and fast adhesion build-up is required SikaFast flexible adhesives are designed to replace mechanical fixings such as rivets, screws or welding Bonding of decorative element and front panels 7

From Mechanical Fixation to Bonding The heavy counter weight for washing machines are typically mechanically connected on the drum assembly. The mass of the counter weight has had to increase due to higher spin speeds of washing machines. Conventional joining methods such as screwing, bolting or welding leads to high stress concentrations in the connections between the counter weight and the drum assembly, that can form cracks either in the drum or the concrete counter weight. To ensure a durable connection and maximize the service life of the materials, the parts should be bonded in order to distribute the stresses evenly throughout the assembly. Sika adhesives are a powerful tool not only to increase performance of the detergent solution tub assembly but also to convert a semi automated and partially manual process into a fully automated robotic line. The major benefits are: Substantial cost savings in the overall process Fully automated high speed production Increased performance and long life cycle of the drum assembly Application Examples ABS/PVC frame bonded on plywood/phenolic/melamine panels for top of appliances Bonding of heat condensator for dryer Sandwich assembly constructions HVAC units heating, ventilation, air-conditioning General sealing from dust and water and access panels Sealing of washing machine door gasket Dampening of structural and airborne noise from air-conditioner, refrigerator, compressor etc. 9
