Enterprise and Commercial Development Job Description for the Post of Business Development Manager (Ref: ECD08/4) 1. Job Purpose Located within ECD, the Business Development Manager will support the Director of ECD Knowledge Transfer in delivering all operational aspects of the Enterprise and Commercial Development Business Plan at Staffordshire University. In particular this entails working with the Director of Enterprise and Commercial Development and SMT colleagues to develop and introducing practical programmes of work, high level administrative support and an operating infrastructure that supports the full role and workload of the Enterprise and Commercial Development office. 3. Relationships Responsible to: Responsible for: Director of ECD Administrative Support Team (3 staff) 4. Job Summary Special Characteristics The purpose of the job is to operationalise the work led by the Director of Enterprise and Commercial Development to develop, implement and maintain a rolling Enterprise and Commercial Development Business Plan and detailed operational plan specifically aligned to the strategic objectives set out in the University Plan and the development priorities of the Faculties and ARCS. Thus ensuring that the operational services delivered by ECD supports the whole University in the delivery of the University Plan. Primarily in respect of ECIF, HEIF, RAE, IP/commercialisation services and associated programmes of work. It is expected that the Business and delivery Plan will focus upon consolidating Enterprise and Commercial Development as a coherent and unified organisational unit, and the development of practical programmes of work and an accompanying infrastructure for the Department, SMT and the wider University. The Enterprise and Commercial Development Business Development Manager will work particularly closely with the other Business Managers within the Faculty Group, Services and Faculty Academic Directors with responsibility for Research and Enterprise. 5. Main Activities To work as a member of the Enterprise and Commercial Development Management Team in accordance with all relevant University policies, and procedures, including the University financial management rules and regulations, student rules and regulations,procurement,health and safety, IT, Financial procedures,and all staff employment policies and procedures. To develop specialist knowledge of these areas and act in an advisory capacity to others in the team. To provide the professional Secretariat and administrative services required to support the effective operation of the Enterprise and Commercial Development Management Team and the structured conduct of the Enterprise and Commercial Development management agenda. This role includes the scheduling of business for the Management Team meetings, annual planning cycle, acting as workforce Planning Coordinator on all workforce planning requirements, overseeing all the ECD Cost Centres and management reporting requirements etc.

To work with the Director of Enterprise and Commercial Development and to provide specific management support in relation to the following portfolio: Resource planning and utilisation within the Enterprise and Commercial Development office, including the management of operating budgets, cost centres, facilities management services and staff planning and utilisation Data collection, interrogation and analysis of projects including liaison with management accountants on sustainability and robustness Oversight, implementation and cross-university engagement in a contacts management system to support and enhance the university s business engagement and third stream activity Strategic marketing communications and PR planning and reputation management of the Enterprise and Commercial Development office s product and service portfolio include the design and distribution of regular print and electronic based media. Performance management within the Enterprise and Commercial Development office, including monitoring the performance against its core responsibilities and the utilisation of all key resources. To contribute to the promotion the University s portfolio of products and services appropriately through various mediums on an on-going basis, via direct mail, networking, referral processes and the website. To ensure the university is represented at key business events and within key business forums, supporting the development of customer relationships and acting as broker both internally and externally. To take responsibility for managing own portfolio of internally and externally funded project based work. Managing the HEIF 4 training and skills development programme for academic staff and those wishing to spin out a company or set up a license deal. Establishing a pilot Knowledge Transfer Fellowship programme for academic entrepreneurs in line with the HEIF 4 objectives. Managing the contract of service with our legal consultants including managing the IP and contracts helpdesk and on line document repository. Handling queries relating to our shareholdings and other contracts held by ECD on behalf of the University. Managing the devolved delivery of the HEIF 4 Speed and EFS workstream which will be delivered by the Business School but Enterprise and Commercial Development retain the responsibility for agreeing and transferring budgets plus the interim and annual monitoring and evaluation. Managing, through devolving responsibilities to the administrative team, all other aspects of Enterprise and Commercial Development operational procedures such as finances, marketing, website, administration etc. Managing the integration of the Lord Stafford Awards programme, ECIF,Medical Interchange and other rolling programmes delivered by ECD on behalf of the University into the operational infrastructure of the department. Overseeing a small team responsible for providing the financial,administrative and project support for HEIF, ECIF, RAE, Lord Stafford Awards and other Enterprise and Commercial Development led programmes of work. To liaise with colleagues University-wide to ensure the correct provision of facilities and services in line with the requirements of the HEIF and ECIF programmes. To provide as a member of Enterprise and Commercial Development Management Team the required staff leadership and management within the Enterprise and Commercial Development office. Communication is a high priority for the Enterprise and Commercial Development Management Team. Manage the cycle of SMT and Departmental meetings, coordinating the agenda and associated written and verbal reports. Undertake such duties as may reasonably be required within the remit of the post including representation on regional and national forums and working groups. Deputise for the Director of ECD when required.

Acting as a member of the ECD Senior Management Team and contributing to the development and delivery of the ECD operational plan. Enterprise and Commercial Development is a small team. Although each member has a specific focus to their job role, it is important, particularly in the context of the developing role of Enterprise and Commercial Development, that appropriate levels of collegiate working and mutual support operate within the team, including appropriate cross-cover arrangements and response to peak work-load requirements. This post will need to work closely with the SPEED/Enterprise Fellowship Scheme Manager, ECIF Programme Manager, External Projects Manager,Business Evolution project manager and the Business Link Advisors in particular to ensure co-ordination of activities.
