The module will draw extensively from the experiences of South East Asia, Latin America and the transition economies. Content outline - Characteristics of emerging markets - Financial development and economic growth - Exchange rate policies in emerging markets - International capital flows and capital account liberalisation - Financial crises and contagion - Financial globalisation and emerging markets - Investing in Emerging Markets WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: -Explain the effects of financial regulation and liberalisation

-Explain the determinants of growth potential -Explain determinants of stock market returns -Evaluate the effects of policy and financial development on economic growth -Explain the behaviour of capital markets -Evaluate the implications of financial globalisation -Perceive the dynamic interrelationships of emerging and developed markets Skills: -Assess structural and reduced form modelling -Develop ability to debate -Develop problem-solving skills through addressing comparative static and other exercises -Develop analytical skills through synthesizing qualitative and quantitative information Values and attitudes: -Perceive that markets can fail -Perceive that regulations can impact on economic agents' behaviour HOW WILL I LEARN? A variety of learning and teaching methods will be used in this course. Lectures are used to introduce context, concepts and techniques illustrated with practical and current examples. You will also have the opportunity to participate in class discussions and work through examples and exercises with the support of the lecturer. It is strongly recommended that you attend ALL lectures. Key learning and teaching resources will be put on the module website on Moodle. In the independent study time you are encouraged to read widely and in depth around particular topics in preparation for lectures and tutorials. You may also spend time working through sample exercises and questions. In addition you will be preparing and undertaking your coursework assignments and preparing for your final examination. Assessments This module is assessed by Coursework and Examination. Coursework will be in the form of a written assignment of 2000 words to be submitted during term (70%) with the remaining 30% of the Coursework mark being allocated on the basis of your participation in class based discussions. At the end of the module you will sit one final 135 minute exam during the University exam period.
