WorldSkills UK s Training and Development Programme for EuroSkills Budapest 2018 and WorldSkills Kazan 2019 Introduction Following the success of WorldSkills Abu Dhabi 2017, where the UK was ranked tenth in the world following its medal-winning performance, WorldSkills UK has started the preparation for the next international skills competitions: EuroSkills Budapest 2018 and WorldSkills Kazan 2019. This document provides an overview of the training and development programme for Squad UK members including the benefits to your personal development, the identified milestones that you will need to meet to progress through the training programme and the required number of training days. It also highlights what information will be sent your employer or training provider. Competitions: Go further, faster in your career You have already proven yourself by excelling in the WorldSkills UK National Competitions but now you have the opportunity to progress even further. Representing your country on the world stage is not easy. It takes hard work, determination and a huge amount of skill but the rewards are worth it. Those that have completed the WorldSkills UK International Training and Development Programme have gone onto be promoted, launch their own businesses, star on TV and publish their own books. In a recent survey, over 95% of competitors believed that taking part in our skill competitions improved their technical and employability skills, while over 80% felt competing had increased their confidence, team working, time management and ability to work under pressure. Training like an Olympian: Overview of Squad and Team UK Training Using techniques and methodology from elite sport, we have designed the WorldSkills UK International Training and Development Programme. The programme consists of two strands - Technical Skills Development and Preparation Boot Camps. Technical Skills Development training Our team of Training Managers, who work in industry and education, develop a programme for each skill that is both challenging and stretching for individuals, meeting the standards required for international competitions. Performance is reviewed regularly, with feedback and evaluation central to each individuals acceleration and growth. The training and assessment programme is delivered over several phases and will consist of: 1. Assessment of core competences: assessing knowledge, skills, and attitudes resulting in the development of a training needs analysis and a programme of activity for each individual. 2. Benchmarking: measuring an individual s performance against global vocational standards at regular intervals throughout the duration of the 18 month preparation programme. 3. Pressure tests: simulating a live competitive environment operated under similar conditions likened to the international competition; this includes competing alongside peers, against a standard often outside of the United Kingdom. 4. Milestones assessments: combination of formative and end point assessments which are carried out during and at the end of each phase of the training programme; providing an opportunity for feedback, review and development for the individual and Training Manager. Preparation Boot Camps (held throughout the training programme) We recognise individuals involved in our programme benefit greatly from high performance coaching and productivity training, which supports the development and acceleration of positive attributes. It is our vehicle to challenge, stretch and assess behaviours and attitudes, resulting in enhanced performance in the work-place and in a skills competition. 3

The boot camps are delivered at key points throughout the programme and consist of: 1. Productivity training: through team based activities, the boot camps seek to aid improvements to the way individuals perform by challenging, stretching and testing their productivity skills. 2. Performance coaching: we help individuals explore what factors motivate them and support them in overcoming the barriers that hold them back. Our team of Performance Coaches, who work in industry and education, support and challenge to facilitate goal setting, self-assessment and selfreflection, in addition to supporting an individual s transition back into education or employment following their involvement with the international training programme. 3. Performance psychology: we apply the psychological principles of human performance through mind management methodologies. This is complemented by performance profiling as a method for supporting individuals in helping them identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to address and accelerate performance in the upper range of their capabilities. 4. Physiological well-being: health and nutrition are the key to aid sustained peak performances. We apply the approaches used to prepare athletes for competition; supplemented by physiotherapy which supports an individual s overall performance. 4

Timetable: Squad and Team UK Training The WorldSkills UK International Training and Development programme is split across three phases, starting with Phase 3 as the first two phases have already been completed.
