Before installation, the pipe shall be inspected for defects. Material found to be defective before or after laying shall be replaced with sound material without additional expense to M-DCPS. 9. Neoprene gaskets that are not to be installed immediately shall be stored in a cool and dark place. C. Cutting of pipe shall be done in a neat and accurate manner without damage to the pipe. Unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer and authorized by the A/E, cutting shall be done with an accepted type mechanical cutter. Wheel cutters shall be used when practicable. D. Locating: 1. Where the location of the sewer pipe is not clearly defined in dimensions on the drawings, the sewer pipe shall not be laid closer horizontally than 10 feet from a water supply line except where the bottom of the water pipe will be at least 18 inches above the top of the sewer pipe. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES 02732-3

2. Water lines shall in all cases cross above sewage force mains and shall be not less than 6 inches above the sewer main. 3. Sewer lines shall not be laid in the same trench with water lines, gas lines, fuel lines, or electric wiring. 4. Excavation and backfilling for trenches and manholes shall be as specified in Section 02222 - Excavating, Backfilling, and Compacting for Utilities. E. Placing and Laying: 1. Pipe and accessories shall be carefully lowered into the trench by means of derrick, ropes, belt slings, or other authorized equipment. 2. Under no circumstances shall any of the water line materials be dropped or dumped into the trench. 3. Care shall be taken to avoid abrasions of the pipe coating. 4. Except where necessary in making connections with other lines, pipe shall be laid with the bells facing in the direction of laying. 5. The full length of each section of pipe shall rest solidly upon the pipe bed, with recesses excavated to accommodate bells, couplings and joints. 6. Pipe that has the grade or joint disturbed after laying shall be taken up and relaid. 7. Pipe shall not be laid in water or when trench conditions are unsuitable for the work. Water shall be kept out of the trench until jointing is completed. 8. When work is not in progress, open end of pipe, fittings, and valves shall be securely closed so that no trench water, earth, or other substance will enter the pipes or fittings. 9. Where any part of the coating or lining is damaged, the repair shall be made by the Contractor, at his expense, in a satisfactory manner. 10. Pipe ends left for future connections shall be valved, plugged, or capped and anchored. F. Jointing Ductile Iron Pipe: Push-on type joints or mechanical joints shall be installed according to AWWA C600, modified as necessary by the recommendations of the manufacturer to provide for special requirements of ductile iron pipe. G. Setting of Valves and Boxes: 1. Install where shown or specified, and set plumb. 2. Valve boxes shall be centered on the valves. 3. Boxes shall be installed over each outside valve unless otherwise shown. 4. Where feasible, valves shall be located outside the area of roads and parking. 5. Earth fill shall be carefully tamped around each valve box to a distance of 4 feet on all sides of the box, or to the undisturbed trench face if less than 4 feet. 6. A concrete ring shall be poured around the box top flush with the ground. H. Thrust Blocks: 1. Plugs, caps, tees, and bends deflecting 22-1/2 degrees or more, either vertically or horizontally, on sewer lines 6 inches in diameter or larger, shall be provided with thrust blocking, or metal tie rods and clamps or lugs. 2. Thrust blocking shall be concrete of a mix not leaner than 1 cement: 2-1/2 sand: 5 gravel and have a compressive strength of not less than 2000 psi after 28 days. 3. Blocking shall be placed between solid ground and the fitting to be anchored. 4. Unless otherwise indicated the base and thrust bearing sides of thrust blocks shall be poured directly against undisturbed earth. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES 02732-4

5. The sides of thrust blocks not subject to thrust may be poured against forms. 6. The area of bearing shall be as shown. 7. Blocking shall be placed to allow the fitting joints to be accessible for repair. I. Hydrostatic Tests: 1. Where any section of the force main is provided with concrete thrust blocking for fittings, the hydrostatic tests shall not be made until at least 5 days after installation of the concrete thrust blocking unless otherwise accepted. 2. Upon completion of the pipe installation for any section, the force main shall be thoroughly flushed. 3. The method proposed for disposal of waste water from hydrostatic tests, cleaning and flushing shall be submitted to the A/E before performing hydrostatic tests, to avoid causing a nuisance or property damage. 4. Pressure Test: a. After the pipe is laid, the joints completed, and the trench partially backfilled leaving the joints exposed for examination, the newly laid piping shall, unless otherwise specified, be subjected for 1 hour to a hydrostatic pressure test of 100 pounds per square inch. b. Exposed pipe, joints, fittings, and valves shall be carefully examined during the partially open trench test. c. Joints showing visible leakage shall be replaced or remade as necessary. d. Cracked or defective pipe, joints, fittings, or valves discovered by this pressure test shall be removed and replaced with sound material, and the test shall be repeated until the test results are satisfactory. e. All replacement and repair shall be without additional expense to M-DCPS. f. Tests shall be inspected and accepted by Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Authority Dept. 5. Time for Making Test: Except for joint material setting or where concrete reaction backing requires a 5 day delay, pipe lines or couplings may be subjected to hydrostatic pressure, inspected and tested for leakage any time after partial completion of backfill. Polyethylene lined pipe may be filled with water as recommended by the manufacturer before being subjected to the pressure test. 6. Leakage shall be defined as the quantity of water that must be supplied into the newly laid pipe, or any valved section thereof, to maintain the specified leakage test pressure after the air in the pipe line has been expelled and the pipe has been filled with water. 7. The maximum allowable leakage shall be determined by the following formula from the "AWWA Standard for Installation of Ductile Iron Water Mains", AWWA C600-85, L = ND times square root of P 3700 L = allowable leakage in gallons per hour. N = number of joints in the length of pipe line tested. D = nominal diameter of the pipe in inches. P = average test pressure during the leakage test in pounds per square inch gage. a. No pipe installation will be accepted if the leakage is greater than that determined by the above formula. Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES 02732-5

b. Locate and repair all leaks until the leakage is reduced to the limits specified, but shall repair all known leaks regardless of the amount of leakage. J. Connection to Existing System: 1. All connections to existing mains of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Authority Department shall be made under the direction of the Authority. Valves separating the mains being installed from existing mains shall be operated by or under the direction of the Authority's representative. The cost of the work by the Authority in making the connection shall be paid by the Contractor. 2. A plug valve and a check valve shall be installed at the beginning of the force main after crossing the property line as indicated on the drawings. 3. In the event the proposed main is to be connected to a main which has one or more active services between the point of connection and the first existing line valve, a temporary plug or cap shall installed on the new main until the pressure tests are completed. Upon satisfactory completion, the cap or plug shall be removed from both mains and the connection made. The connection shall be made as swiftly as possible. The pipe line shall then be placed in service by the Authority personnel. 3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Cost of Test: Cost of tests will be at the Contractor's expense. 3.3 CLEANUP: A. Upon completion of the installation of the force main and appurtenances, all debris and surplus materials resulting from the work shall be removed. END OF SECTION Project No. SPECIFICATION GUIDELINES 02732-6
