Indonesia s Pledge for Emission Reduction* Statement by President Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono We are devising an energy mix policy... that will reduce our emissions by 26 percent by 2020. With international support, we are confident we can reduce emissions by as much as 41 percent. We are also looking into the distinct possibility of committing a billion tons of CO2 reduction by 2050.We will change the status of our forests from that of a net emitter sector to a net [carbon] sink sector by 2030 *Stated at the G20 Summit on Sept 2009 and reiterated at UNFCCC COP 15/CMP 5 on Dec 2009 Estimation of Indonesia nett emission: it is estimated from 1.38 GtCO 2 e (year 2000) to 2.95 GtCO 2 e (year 2020) 2.95 1.38 1.76 2000 2005 2020 Key source categories are peat emission, forestry, energy and waste. Emission from peat fire was taken from van der Werf et al (2007). The figure in the charts did not include emission from emission from liming and fertilizing 3

SBY to the UN Climate Leaders Summit, New York, 23 rd Sept 2014 Indonesia telah mengambil sejumlah langkah untuk menjawab tantangan perubahan iklilm, antara lain: memenuhi target sukarela mengurangi emisi gas rumah kaca hingga 26% pada tahun 2020 mempertegas sikap pada pihak-pihak yang masih melakukan penggundulan hutan dan penurunan fungsi lahan berupaya melakukan eksplorasi potensi ekosistem karbon biru sebagai penyerap karbon dan menandatangani kesepakatan Amandemen Doha bagi Protokol Kyoto. Indonesia has taken a number of strategic messages to drive the challenge of climate change. This includes, first, Indonesia has voluntarily pledged to reduce GHG emission by 26% by 2020 Indonesia has also stand ready to strengthen cooperation with our partners in bilateral and regional level. Partnership is a demand. (www.voaindonesia.com) 5

GHG Inventory of Second National Communication National GHG Inventory The National Greenhouse Gases Inventory (NGHGI) was estimated using Tier 1 and Tier 2 of the 2006 IPCC Reporting Guidelines and the IPCC GPG for LULUCF The NGHGI period 2000-2005 reports on the three main GHGs included in Appendix A of the Kyoto Protocol (CO 2, CH 4 and N 2 O). The GHG emissions (in CO2 equivalent) were distributed unevenly between the three gases recorded, i.e.net CO2 totalled 1,112,878.82 Gg (CO2e), representing 80.8% of the National GHG emissions; methane (CH4) totalled 236,617.97 Gg (CO2e) or 17.2%; and nitrous oxide (N2O) totalled 28,341.02 Gg (CO2e) or 2.0% Source: Indonesia Second National Communication Source: Indonesia Second National Communication 11
