Definitions of Water Security

Definitions of Water Security Water Resources Security is a situation in which water resources are available for basic human needs and socioeconomic requirements, ultimately contributing to poverty reduction, relevant ecosystem services are provided based on a healthy status of aquatic and water-dependent ecosystems, risks related to water especially in the context of climate change are reduced or mitigated, and conflicts among different users and interest groups over the use and/or protection of water resources are prevented or mitigated and forced migration related to resource degradation is avoided.

The Water Resources Security Framework Objectives Evaluating experiences and lessons learned across the water portfolio Enhancing/ Mainstreaming good practices of existing projects Presenting internally and with donors, partner institutions and sector community Expanding the role of water through convincing impact chains showing the key role of water

IMPACT overarching political goals (beyond water) IMPACT water resources security including acceptable risks OUTCOMES MODULES APPROACHES & TOOLS

Next steps Further of the framework Internal testing for concept and evaluation Designing communication material According to target group

Guiding Questions What is your approach to the concept of water security and how does the proposed Water Security Framework proposed by GIZ connect with your ongoing initiatives? How do activities particularly related to water benefit or connect with the overarching agenda (including topics such as climate resilience and urban )? Are there any opportunities for improving water security outside of the water sector (e.g. hydropower, cooling water, agricultural irrigation)? As water is affecting many sectors simultaneously, how can cooperation be strengthened between institutions responsible for water resources management at the local, national and transboundary level in order to improve water security?
