INNOVATIVE INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES IN COMPRESSED AIR AND VACUUM APPLICATIONS MATCHING ECO-EFFICIENCY WITH MARKET DEMAND INTRODUCING THE PNEUROP GREEN CHALLENGE 2020 PNEUROP : promoting and serving the compressed air equipment industry
The compressed air, gas and vacuum industry PNEUROP is the European association of manufacturers of compressors, vacuum pumps, pneumatic tools and allied equipment, represented by their national associations. PNEUROP speaks on behalf of its members in European and international forums regarding the harmonization of technical, normative and legislative developments in the field of compressors, vacuum pumps, pneumatic tools and allied equipment. PNEUROP represents 10 Trade Associations and members of these Associations represent a market turnover in products and services of 21 Billion in Europe. Page 2
What is the PNEUROP Green Challenge 2020? To put compressor and vacuum technologies on the agenda as Sustainable Technologies, contributing to meeting the overall EU challenge of 2020, in the areas of Climate Change and Energy Use. To promote compressors and vacuum pumps as being essential enablers for many innovative and viable environmental technologies, including : The low carbon economy The Hydrogen economy The process efficiency improvements The provision of safe energy in dangerous and potentially explosive environments Compressor and vacuum technologies are essential to enabling sustainable technologies for the future of our Society Page 3
One century of progress : From 1900 To 2000 Reliable energy source Low maintenance cost Instrumentation Control Process enabler Energy efficient Sustainable manufacturing Page 4
EXAMPLES : Enabling the Low Carbon Economy Without Compressors, there would be no Hydrogen /CNG powered vehicles or systems Moving to the hydrogen /CNG economy requires compressors for the transport and storage of hydrogen/cng Carbon capture/ sequestration Compressors will be essential for this key environmental technology Electronic control of environmental technologies All Electronic component manufacture requires high/low pressure process steps with high purity air Air storage to reduce peak energy demand Compressed Air is stored as an energy source to address peak demand and reduce energy use Page 5
EXAMPLES : Enabling the Low Carbon Economy Without Vacuum there would be no Solar PV electricity Photo Voltaic cells provide clean renewable energy, producing zero air pollution, hazardous waste, or noise LED low energy lighting LED lighting reduces energy use by up to 95% Energy efficient (Low E) glass Vacuum coating reduces building heat loss through glass Vacuum Insulated Glass Using same principle as a vacuum Thermos flask, VIG provides similar insulation to insulated building walls Low friction moving parts e.g. wind turbine blades Carbon vacuum deposited on moving parts to reduce friction Electronic and pneumatic control of environmental technologies Page 6
EXAMPLES : Enabling Process Efficiency Compressors enable increased efficiency in Wine making Nitrogen generation Water treatment plant bio-processing Increased efficiency driven by compressed air diffusion for speedy bio-processing Page 7
EXAMPLES : Enabling Process Efficiency Vacuum enables increased efficiency by Vacuum deposition processes Replaces electrolytic deposition, reducing use and disposal of hazardous chemicals Vacuum zinc deposition replaces hot zinc dipping reducing energy use Vacuum distillation Replaces steam distillation, allowing low temperature distillation reducing thermal energy Vacuum steel degassing Vacuum degassing during the manufacture of speciality steel alloys reduces impurities, and offers considerable energy savings compared to the traditional steam ejector systems Page 8
EXAMPLES: Enabling a Safe Work Environment Without compressors, there would be no compressed air to provide safe and efficient: process actuation in dangerous or potentially explosive environments power tools for demanding environments operation of vehicles - e.g. braking systems in trucks, trailers and railcars Page 9
PNEUROP: Environmental Action by Members Pneurop members are implementing the following actions to minimise their environmental impact: Environmentally conscious manufacturing and cleaning processes Eco-design and product life cycle management : the 3R approach - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Energy saving targets for their manufacturing processes and products Most members are certified to the environmental management system standard ISO14001 And some have even received official recognition for their eco-friendly approach Page 10
