Selling ads Ad pages can help cover the cost of your yearbook. There are two different types that you can use. Personal ads These are the easiest type of ads to sell since they are being sold to parents, teachers, and loved ones of the students. It s a fun way to leave a message of encouragement and congratulations for achievements to be looked back on for years to come. There are several ways to structure these ads to fit your particular yearbook design. Single Line Full Page Half Page Quarter Page tips: Offer a special price for ads that are purchased early. Reach out to graduating class members and parents individually. Offer examples as a starting point for parents. Sometimes it s hard to find the right words. Set a character limit so you know exactly how many ads you can fit on a page or to ensure that the text fits within the ad space. If offering picture ads, make sure to give specs on picture size and dates for them to be turned in. Business ads... tips: Give businesses in the area an opportunity to reach local students and parents with a message, while supporting your yearbook and school. It s a win-win for both your school and the business... Prepare your sales team with a script for approaching local businesses. Send along paperwork showing different ad options. Make personal visits to the place of business versus sending an email or making a phone call. Your sales team will see the difference. Use this as an opportunity to teach your students about sales by setting a goal for them to reach.

fundraising It s easier to sell yearbooks when price is more affordable. WITH A LITTLE BIT OF FUNDRAISING, you can get the PRICE DOWN to a level that parents will be happy with or may be able to offer one to every student FOR FREE! It s up to you and your team! Selling ads is a GREAT WAY to help fund your yearbook. YEARBOOK CONTESTS Enter into Inter-State Studio s Yearbook Legacy Contest for your chance to WIN $500 to put toward your yearbook program. Go to yearbooks.inter-state.com/contest find out more about the rules and regulations and submit your book TO WIN! HOST A SCHOOL CARNIVAL Proceeds from TICKET SALES will go toward your yearbook, and you will have a GREAT TIME. If you all work together and pool your resources, you can come up with some inexpensive games to play. Ask LOCAL BUSINESSES and the community to donate small prizes. HAVE A CAR WASH This TRIED AND TRUE fundraiser has stood the test of time. It s a great summer activity to help you build up your budget. HOLD A SILENT AUCTION Have it take place during a big game or event at your school. You can rely on local businesses to provide merchandise if you give them ad space on the table. It s a win for everyone! PLAN A 5K There are many themes you can use for a 5K and it doesn t have to cost you much at all! Collect the registration fees for your yearbook program. CREATE SOMETHING TO SELL Have each student bring in a family recipe to include in a school cookbook, hold a bake-sale, or auction off artwork created by the students themselves.

sales tips If sales aren t your strong point, here are a few tips to get you through the process of selling your yearbook. Keep these in mind for a <<<< <<<< successful yearbook season! 1 2 open-house 3 yearbooks 4 A 5 to Use your school s resources to get the word out. Put it in the bulletin, announce it over the P.A., make a Facebook post. Just make sure you announce it, and do it often! Take advantage of prime selling opportunities. Include an order form with your packets or set up a table at big sporting events throughout the year. Use the tools we have available to help you sell yearbooks. Just contact your rep to order materials like flyers, hall posters and stickers. We also offer banners that you can include in your emails and on your website to remind parents that are on sale. Offer incentives to your team to meet yearbook sales goals. friendly competition will encourage them to work hard at the task. Have a plan for collecting yearbook payments. You will need to know this before you start selling. Will parents be able to pay online or will they need to submit payment the school directly? 6 (Remember, 7 highest 8 sharing, 9 or 10 Run campaigns. Give parents an incentive to purchase a yearbook early by offering the yearbook at a lower price before a pre-determined date. This will also help you gain a better perspective on how many yearbooks you will actually need to order. Inter-State does not require you to lock-in your quantity until your book is submitted.) Bolster pre-sales by offering an ice cream or pizza party to the class with the percentage of yearbooks sold. Let everyone get involved in submitting pictures for the yearbook. If they are a part of the process, they will want to purchase the end product. A great idea is to create a share group on Facebook specifically for the yearbook. It s a fun way to get everyone and you will have a lot of pictures to choose from when creating the yearbook. Know your market. Be aware of what a reasonable price would be for the yearbook you are selling. What would parents be willing to pay? If need be, make up the difference with fundraising ad sales. Get the students excited, and the parents will be excited. One great way to promote awareness and build some fun around the yearbook is to join the Yerd Herd. It s a program we have created to build some fun around yearbooks and help Advisors get students involved.... go to... yearbooks.inter-state.com/yerdherd to learn more AND order your Yerd Herd gear.

selling your yearbook for a profit Yearbook sales don t just have to be about covering cost. They can also give your school the perfect opportunity to raise funds for another venture. Think field trips or better technology! Use EVERYTHING you have learned so far and build on it to sell your yearbook for a profit. Here s how... 1 Determine the ideal selling price for your yearbook. (Refer to the worksheet in the front of this book to help you visualize this process.) 2 Multiply that selling price times the number of books you plan to order. (Example: $10 per book X 100 Books = $1,000 in Yearbook Sales) Contact your rep for a current quote based on your specific yearbook needs. Have the following information 3 ready when you call: Layout program type Number of books needed Color or B/W yearbook Binding Style 4 page 5 Make Total number of pages Other options (lamination, special cover, personalization, foil stamping, etc.) Take your quote (Step 3) and subtract the amount you will make on your yearbook sales (Step 2). The balance is what you need to earn from ad sales. Divide this amount by the number of ad pages you have allotted to get the minimum amount you need to earn per to pay for the printing of your yearbook. adjustments to get to the desired Profit. Raise or lower the selling price to see how different prices will affect your profits. Play around with different pricing strategies for the sale of ads. Once your costs are covered, any additional income from ad sales or fundraising can be counted as profit for your school or yearbook program. Carry it over to help cover next year s yearbook or use it to support other programs.
