If you read it and study it, then selling your quota of ads will be easy. Learning to sell is a skill you can use at any time of your life, and in order to have a newsmagazine that you will be proud of, it is very important that you learn to sell and that you sell as many ads as possible. It will be easier if you sell in the summer because businesses and families have plenty of time to make their decision. It is important that you review all the material in this handbook. As a staff, we will come up with businesses we should approach. If you personally know an owner of a business, definitely sell their ads. Because a signature on the contract is required, you will need to take the contract by the office or mail; you should not sell the ad over the phone. If you mail it, be sure to include a stamped self-addressed envelope so the merchant can mail it directly back to you or the school. Veteran staff members will have first dibs on two of their past year s ad buyers; the rest are up for grabs. It is recommended to go in pairs to sell the ads, but it is not required. Dress appropriately; no denim or t-shirts. Please be polite at all times. Remember you represent the school, and your behavior reflects on your character as well as the school and the staff. 3 Ad Requirements The Courier Your advertising grade will be a major grade for the first quarter grading period. It will be based on the following: 1. Selling eight blocks of ads during the summer. The summer ad requirement is due the first day of school and will be your first grade. However, if you have some of your ads sold by production week, then the business team will check them in. Make sure you do everything possible to collect the money the day you sell the ad. If you sell extra blocks, you won t have to sell an ad block during the school year, and it ll count towards extra credit! 2. Selling one block of ads during the school year when assigned. If you are unable to sell a block, your grade will reflect that. Because you only have to sell an ad once in the school year, it should not be difficult to reach this requirement; depending on the amount of adds sold, we may need to sell more ads each month for the upcoming issue. 3. Correctly and accurately completing the advertising contract. This includes the firm s name, the contact s name printed (so we can read it), telephone number, date, zip code, price, size, what is going on the ad, the chosen format for their complimentary copy and your name. For every piece of information that does not appear on each ad, two points will be deducted from your total points. **Make sure they say which month the ad is for** 4. Selling and turning in contracts by the deadlines. 5. Gathering information to help complete the ad. Always try to get a business card or design for business ads, logos, messages, etc. when you sell the ad. Let them know that if they are designing the ad, the design should be ed to Mrs. Phillips or the business team on the first day of the month that the ad is being run! 6. Making sure the ad is accurate and completed the way the owner/manager/parent wanted it. Make sure you consult the business manager who is in charge of the designing of the ad. Make sure to ask the business if they want to design the ad or have us design it. 7. Remember, you need to sell eight blocks total, so you don t need to sell ads for only one issue. You can sell four two-block ads for different issues, or eight one-block ads for each issue, etc. Try to get the businesses to buy ads for not only the September issue mention prom, the holiday season, graduation, etc. The other months are important, too! If they buy the ads for later months, let them know that the business team can bill them at a later time instead of paying up front. **Credit will be given for effort for attempts to sell ads during the summer. If a business declines to purchase an ad, have the person sign and date the back of the advertising contract showing that you did try to sell the ad, and write your name on the front**

4 Overcoming objections when selling newspaper ads Some potential advertisers will not be eager to advertise in The Courier. Budgets are tight, and advertising in school publications is not high on their priority list. Therefore, your sales approach must be more aggressive in order to overcome any objectives that the companies have. You should have your sales pitch planned and know how to respond to companies/managers who have reasons not to buy. Be prepared to answer the following questions that potential buyers may have. Refer to the possible answers to the questions underneath each question. 1. Why should I advertise in the newspaper? The whole student body reads the Courier, as well as parents and other businesspeople in the area, plus teachers who work at Orange. 2. Who else advertises in your book? The following is a list of some of the advertisers from last year: Polaris Orthodontic Center Just Hoops OrthoNeuro MoJo TaGo Taranto s Pizzeria Eyeshop Optical Pro Fencing The Skin Spa 3. Do you offer discounts? If you sign the contract and pay today, I can take $5 off the original price, so a 1-block ad is $35 instead of $40. We also offer an 8-issue discount where if you pay for all 8 issues up front, 15% will be taken off your total. 4. What size ads do you have? Here is the pricing sheet that lists all of the prices and dimensions. If you provide us the art, the business managers will design the ad so it fits the specifications. 5. When do I pay? The business managers prefer payment up front. As soon as the payment is received, they will start working on the design and placement of the ad. If you prefer that they bill you, they can, and then you send a check in the mail to our school address, directed to Kari Phillips, the adviser of the Courier. *Do what you can to get the business to pay the day you sell the ad. If you get a contract and check, fill out another copy of the contract for the business to keep as a receipt*

5 6. Can I use my own artwork? Sure you can design the ad and it as a PDF to my newsmagazine adviser at kari_phillips@olsd.us. You can also give us a business card that the ad can be modeled after or you can have the business manager design the ad from scratch. This artwork is due on the first day of the month your ad will be run. 7. How many people will see my ads? Our entire student body (about 2,100 students) will see the ads because everyone has a chance to see a newspaper at least once even if they did not purchase one. Teachers, parents, other businesses and faculty will see the ads as well. 8. I don t have it in my budget. You cannot afford to miss out on this great advertising opportunity, with 400 issues sold each month. There are eight months of prime opportunity to advertise your business! If you don t have the money right now but would like to purchase an ad, the business managers can bill you next month or we can wait until January. 9. Do you provide proofs of the ads before you print? That is a service we can provide if you want to see a proof. If you give us an address, we can you a PDF proof of the ad design, and you can give us suggestions by ing us at kari_phillips@olsd.us, sophiarores@icloud.com or jnnicole123@gmail.com. We can also drop a proof off for you to view. 10. I advertise in Olentangy s newsmagazine or I have already bought one for another school. All the more reason to buy you ll reach even more local customers if you put an ad in both places. The Orange High School community benefits from your store. Parents patronize stores who support their children and school. 11. Kids don t shop in my store. Even if students don t shop here, they have influence on where their parents shop! Remember, students are not the only people reading the newspaper.
