MATURITY BassA is a medium maturing, semi-dwarf malting barley. It has a prostrate growth habit like BaudinA and reaches awn-peep slightly later than Scope CLA and VlaminghA. RAINFALL BassA is ideally suited to the medium to high rainfall zones of Western Australia. Bass A best performance is seen in longer growing seasons and when the variety is sown within its recommended sowing window. DISEASE BassA has an improved disease resistance profile over BaudinA. It offers improved powdery mildew resistance and scald resistance. BassA is now considered susceptible to leaf rust following the discovery of a virulent Rph3 leaf rust pathotype, which can be effectively managed with a foliar fungicide program. For Net Form of Net Blotch and Spot Form of Net Blotch, a foliar fungicide such as AMISTAR XTRA or COGITO may be required. For powdery mildew, additional management techniques will be of benefit. JOCKEY treated seed in Western Australia, along with the application of foliar fungicides such as AMISTAR XTRA will provide the best level of control and protection. GRAIN QUALITY BassA possesses excellent export malting qualities and exhibits a malt quality profile similar to BaudinA. Protein BassA is an excellent protein accumulator, with protein levels consistently exceeding BaudinA by 0.5 %. BassA has excellent grain plumpness, similar to VlaminghA and has good test weight. BassA produces low screenings and is considered a high protein accumulator, on average 0.5 % higher than BaudinA. Due to Bass A excellent protein accumulation ability, in-season nitrogen applications need to be monitored to ensure crops are managed to meet the GIWA Malt 1 (CBH) protein receival standards. WESTERN AUSTRALIA PLANT FEATURES BassA has a medium coleoptile length therefore, it is recommended that VIBRANCE be applied to the seed to minimise seed treatment impacts on coleoptile length and subsequent pre-emergent herbicide interaction. This treatment will provide greater sowing depth flexibility and maximise early seedling vigour and emergence. Bass A standability is good and as such PGR s are not normally required, however, with lush crops or very fertile sites the application of a PGR may be required. In these cases use the low rate of MODDUS 200mL/ha at GS 31 to stabilise tillers and promote root development.
