COURSE INFORMATION First Aid Training Existing Workers and Job Seekers Face to Face and Self-Paced Classes available from 17 th August onwards

WELCOME The First Aid Training course provides participants with a nationally-accredited qualification in first aid. The course is tailored to existing workers, job seekers or anyone who may be called upon to provide a first aid response in a range of situations including community and workplace settings. The program also serves as a refresher course for those whose previously-obtained first aid qualifications have now expired, as they are required to be recertified in HLTAID003 Provide first aid every three years and in HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation annually (as per the Safe Work Australia Code of Practice). The course is designed to be easily accessible to those in our community who need assistance with language, literacy and numeracy or who face other employment barriers such as personal or health issues, financial limitations, or lack of access to support or services. WHY DO I WANT TO DO THIS COURSE? The First Aid Training program is nationally accredited, giving you the skills and knowledge you need to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The course is suitable for participants who haven t studied first aid before, as well as those who have attained first aid qualifications in the past but are now due to complete a refresher course. The program is conducted in a supportive environment that s designed to help students who may be experiencing challenging life circumstances. Language, Literacy and Numeracy support and Student Support Services are available to you if you would like this additional support, to help you achieve your qualification. The course is highly practical and focused on real safety scenarios that you can put in to practice. Some of the topics you will cover during the program include: Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Fractures and dislocations Burns and scalds Head, chest and spinal injuries Fainting and unconsciousness Bandaging techniques Severed limbs Poisoning, bites, stings and much more. On successful completion of the course you ll receive a Statement of Attainment for both units, as well as a separate statement for each unit containing specific information regarding the validity of the qualification. In addition, you will receive two cards, giving the details of your qualification, which you can keep in your wallet or purse. After completing this course candidates may undertake HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid, although this unit of competency is currently not available for study through WEA Hunter. In cases where a student has attended the course but has been unable to meet the full requirements of the competency, we will provide that student with a certificate of attendance, as an indication of their participation in the course. This will clearly indicate the student did not complete the course, but rather only attended it. Course Information Booklet - 2015 - First Aid Training - Newcastle Page 2 of 9

HOW WILL THE COURSE BE CONDUCTED? The course is offered on a range of dates. You ll complete two (2) units of competency in total, which have been selected from the following training package: HLT Health (release 1.3 current) Mode of Delivery The course is offered in two modes, allowing you to choose which delivery method is best suited to your learning style and your lifestyle commitments: Face-to-Face - 2 x face-to-face classroom sessions (or 1 x session, if undertaking HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation as a stand-alone unit), which incorporates both your theory and practical components Self-Paced your theory is completed via online via e-learning, and your practical is completed in 1 x faceto-face classroom session. The Training Manual will be supplied. If any of the above is difficult for you, please talk to our Student Support Worker at your interview, who may be able to assist you. CAN I GET CREDIT FOR PREVIOUS STUDY? If you are eligible absolutely! There are two main ways to have your previous study recognised: 1) Credit Transfer Credit Transfer means you have already obtained the same unit, or a very similar unit, and you will receive direct credit for that unit. VET Units are nationally recognised, so if you have obtained a unit somewhere else (or here at WEA), just provide us with a certified copy of your Statement of Attainment or Certificate, and we will apply the transfer. There is no fee for credit transfer for students enrolled in a full course of study with us. 2) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) RPL is a little bit more complicated. It means that you have skills from the workplace already, and/or a different qualification, which when looked at in combination means you already have, and can demonstrate, the knowledge and skills for a particular unit. It is important to note that RPL is a process. It requires an assessor to carefully analyse all the evidence that you provide and assess it against the unit. It takes time, but can mean that you don t have to study that unit. After all, you already know it all! Very often people have the skills and knowledge, but have difficulty finding the evidence. This may be because they don t have access to their old workplace to get documents from, or because their job roles are too different to satisfy the requirements. In that case there may be other options for you (such as an assessment only pathway) - please contact us to discuss further. So you have some idea of what s involved, the general process is below however some programs will amend this when we know a lot about your circumstances already. Survey You will be sent a questionnaire that will ask you about your work history and what evidence you have available for your RPL application. You don t have to send in any evidence at this point. Your assessor will take a look at your survey response and work with you to decide if RPL is the right path for you. RPL Evidence Gathering You will be sent a work book that will contain all the different pieces of evidence we will need to see to assess you. This section is usually the largest amount of work for you. Your assessor will take a look at what you submit and then will decide what the next steps are for you. RPL Assessment Your assessor will conduct some other activities to ensure we gather the volume of evidence we need to deem you competent. This is different in each situation but may involve small assessments, competency conversations (an oral questioning assessment), third-party reports (such as from a supervisor), and many others. Course Information Booklet - 2015 - First Aid Training - Newcastle Page 6 of 9

In order to successfully get through the RPL process you have to get over the biggest hurdle to success evidence. The only evidence we can accept is evidence that reflects all four of the below Rules of Evidence : Valid this means the evidence is directly related to the unit/s you are applying for. Often people have trouble meeting that requirement if they are trying to use evidence from a different industry to what they are applying for. Sufficient Units of Competency are big things, with lots of different criteria. Sometimes you have the skills and knowledge, but you are missing a little piece of evidence that you simply haven t kept a copy of, or perhaps you just don t have access to. Often supplementary assessments in the final stage will help with this, but it is not always possible. Current this is a big one! Your evidence must be recent. There is no set timeframe as it depends on the industry you are applying for recognition through. Generally a good rule of thumb is that your evidence should have been from the previous two years. Authentic the evidence must be yours. It is no good to us to present documents from your workplace that were created by someone else. A supervisor may need to sign off to say it is your work. Ultimately, it is important to remember that RPL is not something that happens overnight but we are here to help you each step of the way. Just let us know if RPL is something you would like to be considered for when enrolling, and we will be in touch. WHAT ARE WEA HUNTER S RESPONSIBILITIES TO ME?
