Manage mission-critical enterprise applications with efficiency IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler Highlights Drive workload performance according to your business objectives Help optimize productivity by automating workloads Manage a high number of activities from a single point of control Provide automated fault tolerance Obtain information about current and future workloads Extend the scope and functionality of centralized workload management Integrate with IBM Tivoli IT Service Management products IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler is an automated workload management solution that helps an On Demand Business effectively manage and operate mission-critical applications within a secure, fault-tolerant and scalable IT infrastructure. The architecture of Tivoli Workload Scheduler allows administrators to quickly and efficiently: Prepare jobs for execution. Manage interdependencies. Launch and track each job. Manage workload from a central point of control Tivoli Workload Scheduler enables you to automate, monitor and manage your enterprise workload on both local and remote systems. From a single, centralized point of control, Tivoli Workload Scheduler analyzes the status of the production work and drives the processing of the workload according to your business policies. The software s Job Scheduling Console (JSC) is intuitive and easy to use for both operators and application developers. Additionally, Tivoli Workload Scheduler supports a multiple end-user environment, allowing you to distribute processing and control across sites and departments within your enterprise. Support and monitor multiple platforms From a single point of control, Tivoli Workload Scheduler supports multiple platforms from UNIX to Microsoft Windows and features advanced integration with enterprise applications such as SAP R/3, SAP Business Warehouse and Oracle E-Business Suite.

Help optimize the management of complex networks Tivoli Workload Scheduler enables you to optimize the management of networks with multiple CPUs, large scheduling plans and complex relations between scheduling objects. The software offers robust, flexible planning capabilities to enable you to easily use sophisticated rules for scheduling jobs and choreographing their execution. For example, you can: Identify instances of the same activity that have been scheduled over different days, then use that information to help reduce the costs of monitoring and managing workload execution in production environments. Define dependencies between activities that are scheduled to run on different days or even on different weeks. Save as drafts activities that are incomplete or not fully tested or associate them with particular validity time windows. This helps you simplify the definition and maintenance of scheduling activities. To help speed network communications, Tivoli Workload Scheduler uses inline compression of data transmission. It also allows you to access files less frequently and helps optimize the use of system resources by caching messages in memory. Tivoli Workload Scheduler offerings provide solution-based components that can be flexibly deployed into any customer production environment to let the customer choose between mainframe-centric, distributed-centric or end-to-end enterprise scheduling solutions without compromising features. Additionally, Tivoli Workload Scheduler enables you to: Quickly distribute the daily plan to other nodes. Optimize the use of system resources through efficient file access and input/output optimization. Optimize fault tolerance for failover operations in high-availability environments through the switch fault-tolerance mechanism. Protect your resource investments with end-to-end optimization Tivoli Workload Scheduler supports standard and fault-tolerant agents directly connected to the end-to-end server without the need for domain managers. This simplifies the definition and maintenance of the Tivoli Workload Scheduler end-to-end network topology for customers who do not have heavy scalability requirements in terms of number of Tivoli Workload Scheduler agents and number of jobs that can be easily addressed by using a simple, flat Tivoli Workload Scheduler network of agents directly connected to the IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/os engine. 2

Manage both calendar- and event-based scheduling for true flexibility Tivoli Workload Scheduler provides both calendar-based and event-based scheduling, allowing you to move from a static platform based on the view of production workloads to a fully dynamic and automated business process driven environment. An environment is created where workloads and workflows are proactively managed and dynamically triggered to help optimize system performance, achieve business policies and ensure SLA attainment. Help ensure business continuity through fault-tolerant operations Tivoli Workload Scheduler architecture provides the complete business continuity needed for an enterprise job scheduling process. No matter where the master scheduler is running mainframe or distributed the hotstandby capability is always there. The fault-tolerant agents have the scheduling production plan information stored locally. Therefore, they can continue processing work even in the case of network downtime or failure. If a link to a domain manager goes down, they will continue to handle the workload locally. Status events are queued locally and forwarded automatically when a network connection resumes. Tivoli Workload Scheduler also integrates with IBM Tivoli System Automation software to provide high-availability systems for more complete fault tolerance. Integrate with business processing using programming interfaces Tivoli Workload Scheduler includes Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE ) application programming interfaces (APIs) and Web services interfaces. Consequently, you can leverage the software s scheduling capabilities within your existing business processes and business-to-business (B2B) integration scenarios. Plus, you and your business partners can access any Tivoli Workload Scheduler scheduling function using standard J2EE and Web services development tools. Furthermore, Tivoli Workload Scheduler uses these programming interfaces and the software s underlying IBM WebSphere Application Server infrastructure to help minimize the software s administration and maintenance costs. The embedded infrastructure is transparent to your Tivoli Workload Scheduler administrators; they do not need to install a separate framework just to maintain JSC connectivity. Maintain security Because Tivoli Workload Scheduler now supports Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) authentication, you can authenticate users who connect to the software through the JSC or through a command line interface (CLI). Leverage flexible, reliable RDBMS-based infrastructure The latest version of Tivoli Workload Scheduler maintains scheduling data in a data management infrastructure that is based on a relational database management system (RDBMS). Because the database is open, you can use simple structured query language (SQL) constructs to extract, manipulate and produce reports from the Tivoli Workload Scheduler scheduling data. What s more, you can take advantage of the database s high reliability, scalability and recoverability. Plus, leverage your existing departmental databases and associated database administrators. Help minimize idle time and optimize efficiency With Tivoli Workload Scheduler, your jobs can begin as soon as their dependencies are satisfied, helping to minimize idle time and maximize 3

throughput. Plus, if a job fails, Tivoli Workload Scheduler automates the recovery process with little or no operator intervention. Help maximize troubleshooting, repair and usability The enhanced installation mechanism of Tivoli Workload Scheduler offers immediate troubleshooting and repair capabilities for a robust restart and backward compatibility with IBM Tivoli Configuration Manager. It enables one-click sorting and filtering of rows for each view. Plus, a new common engine query allows you to define job lists across scheduling engines and platform boundaries. Tivoli Workload Scheduler also offers: Look and feel that embraces standards common across many Tivoli products. Optimized performance of the JSC with minimized memory footprint. Increased number of time zones described in long format, for example, America/New York. Help optimize job schedule management Tivoli Workload Scheduler integrates with Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/os, a host-based workload management solution that monitors job scheduling from client/server applications to desktop computing and heritage mainframe production. Tivoli Workload Scheduler also integrates with other mainframe scheduling products. Access optimized documentation management functionality Tivoli Workload Scheduler provides comprehensive and efficient documentation, targeting the key roles of product users, including: Advanced troubleshooting capabilities. Advanced tuning and maintenance. Online examples and usage scenarios. Job scheduling user s guide, planning and installation guide, and reference manuals. Take advantage of certification with SAP R/3 By integrating with SAP R/3, Tivoli Workload Scheduler allows you to optimize central management of your end-to-end network. You can define SAP R/3 jobs on the fly and launch them without intervention directly from the R/3 system. You can integrate with the Unicode R/3 system on all SAP-provided platforms, allowing you to store multilingual definitions in the model. Plus, it enables you to define centralized jobs from end to end directly on the SAP R/3 system. Seamlessly upgrade from the earlier version of Tivoli Workload Scheduler Because Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.3 uses a different model and infrastructure than Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.2, IBM has designed the software to make the migration to the latest version as easy and flexible as possible. The master software and agents for both versions can coexist with one another in the same network. As a result, if you take a step-by-step approach to the upgrade, you can migrate either the master or the agents first and benefit from the new features right away. Furthermore, Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.3 includes an intelligent data-upgrade utility that imports the scheduling definition from a back-level Tivoli Workload Scheduler 8.2 installation and stores it in the new RDBMS database. As it does so, the utility alerts you about any inconsistencies it finds on the old database (for example, a job that is defined to run on a nonexisting workstation). When possible, the utility also fixes the inconsistencies it finds. The Tivoli Workload Scheduler upgrade procedures and utilities have been validated in the field through extensive 4

tests with many real production databases used by several Tivoli Workload Scheduler customers.
