MARKET PROFILE Agricuture pays a pivota roe in the Indian economy. Its contribution to India s GDP is around 16%, and provides empoyment to 56% of the workforce. Soi Rejuvenation Bioresources The Nationa Mission for Sustainabe Agricuture (NMSA) has been formuated to enhance agricutura productivity, especiay in rainfed areas for water use efficiency, integrated farming, soi heath management and resource conservation. The government Soi Heath Card Scheme (aunched in February 2015), to issue heath cards to 140 miion farmers, woud carry crop-wise recommendations of nutrients and fertiizers required for individua farms to improve productivity through judicious use of inputs. Growing a variety of crops in a panned sequence in order to increase soi organic matter and biodiversity in the soi Cover crop as part of panned rotation to the soi No-ti farming as a way of growing crops without disturbing the soi through tiage Much tiage as a method where the soi surface is disturbed but maintains a high eve of crop residue on the surface Muching by appying pant residues or other suitabe materias to the soi surface to compensate for oss of residue due to excessive tiage Nutrient management to meet crop needs whie minimizing the impact on the environment and the soi Pest management, with an ecoogica approach, to promote growth of heathy pants with strong defenses, to increase stress on pests, and enhance the habitat for beneficia organisms. R ura India depends on a wide range of bioresources (nonfossi biogenic resources used to produce food, substantia products, and energy) for their nutrition and iveihood. Sma and margina farmers need: Traditiona rights of access to biodiversity, which incude access to forest products incuding medicina pants, gums and resins, oi yieding pants and beneficia micro-organisms Opportunities to conserve, enhance and improve crops and farm animas as we as fish stocks Suitabe community-based breed conservation (i.e. conservation through use) Breeding to increase output of ow productivity farm animas, etc. Irrigation Of the gross sown area of 192 miion ha, rainfed agricuture contributes to 60 per cent of the gross cropped area, and 45 per cent of the tota agricutura output Farmers need access to sustained and equitabe water suppy Rainwater harvesting and recharge of aquifers shoud be mandatory, and targeted at private we owners.
