CHAPTER 1. INTRODUCTION This guideline is intended to be a guide to internship for undergraduate students in the Industrial Engineering Department. Document outlines the details of the IE300 and IE400 courses and gives the information about the expected student responsibilities during the summer practice. Another objective of this guideline is to state the University regulations regarding to ınternship applications. 1.1. Concept of Internship Summer Practice is an important opportunity for making a student ready for future employment and transformation of their academic knowledge into real life experience. Students should use this period to begin thinking about their career. Main opportunities of internship can be listed as; 1. It gives an opportunity to develop more comprehensive and accurate understanding of Industrial Engineering activities by integrating academic and real life experience. 2. It gives an opportunity to improve skills and advance educations by completing a real life projects. 3. It gives an opportunity to collaborate with other interns and with inter-departmental employees. 4. It gives an opportunity to develop a professional behaviour and social skills 5. It gives an opportunity to gain insights into their ability to work better as an individual or in a group-oriented career. An internship offers students the opportunity to work with someone who can be a guide for them throughout their career, not just an internship. It is also a good opportunity to meet new people while setting up a network of professional people, guides and references. 1.2. Regulations Regarding Internship Marmara University Faculty of Engineering Internship Regulation is the baseline of this regulation. 1. Students can do their first internship at the end of the fourth semester. They cannot apply for a summer internship in the first three semesters. 2. Students are required to complete at least 60 workdays (12 weeks) internships in undergraduate study programs. 3. The duration of the internship can be at least 10 workdays and up to maximum 30 workdays. It is strongly recommended that internships should be at least 15 days, but if there is a valid reason, 10 days will be approved. 2

4. The earliest date to start the internship is the end of the final exam period. Under exceptional circumstances, the internship commission can waive this rule 5. According to the Regulation of Marmara University Summer School; internship can be done at least 3 working days per week, on the situations like summer school. 6. Internships cannot be held on official holidays. 7. Each week is assumed to be 5 workdays. For workplaces that also work on Saturdays, an official letter is required to indicate that Saturdays are the working day. 8. If the period between two semesters includes 10 or more workdays, students can also do internship during the semester breaks. 9. Students can do their internship in foreign countries other than Turkey. 1.3. Finding the Company for Internship There are numerous ways to find the company for the summer practice: 1. The internship commission releases the internship announcements that arrive at the department on the department's board. 2. Student can send his or her resume directly to the company where (s)he wants to do the summer training. 3. The student can apply by checking the internship announcements from the following web sites; http://www.kariyer.net/ https://www.yenibiris.com/ 4. Student can reach announcements of the Companies from the following web site; https://www.linkedin.com/ 5. Other ways Please keep in mind that many large scale firms make announcements to the Internship in March and April. 1.4. Application Process The steps for application process are listed below; 1. An application Form prepared by the internship commission of Department of Industrial Engineering, must be taken from the website and forwarded to the relevant advisor in the organization. This letter contains information about the purpose and rules of the internship. For an acceptable Internship, Qualifications are listed below; i. The company should employ engineers 3

ii. The trainee must work under the supervision of an engineer iii. The company should identify / develop appropriate job descriptions iv. The job description must be of an engineering nature and consistent with the training and experience of the trainee ***If an internship is approved, approved Application Form must be submitted to the internship commission. 2. Students who are accepted to the internship must submit the Internship Approval Form, Social Security Form and the Approved Application Form to the Internship Commission before the end of the related term. 3. The students who do not give the Social Security Form, will assume that all the responsibility belongs to them. The Social Security Form is not required for students who are to be insured by the company. These students are required to submit an approved document to the internship commission to show that the company will cover their insurance. 4. Due to time consuming process of insurance process, students are required to submit their forms 2 weeks early before the starting day of internship. 1.5. Suitable Internship Fields Regardless of where the internship took place, students are required to deal with a practical problem and come up with a solution by applying at least some of the analytical skills and methods they learn in the IE program. The skills that acquired in the IE program is suitable to apply to the problems of a diverse set of companies in various industries. Students may look into companies; 1. Manufacturing 2. Logistic 3. Transportation 4. Telecommunication 5. Consulting 6. Healthcare 7. Banking 8. Finance 9. Energy 10. Public Sector 11. Information Technology 12. Etc. Students may encounter interesting problems in various departments such as 1. Procurement 2. Tactical and strategic planning 3. Logistic 4. Supply Chain Management 4

5. Management Information Systems 6. Quality Assurance 7. Sales and Marketing 8. Customer Relationship Management 9. Occupational Safety / Work safety 10. Business Development Process 11. Process Management 12. Information System 13. Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems 14. Aftersales Management 15. Project Management 16. Stock Management 17. etc. ***FOR DIFFERENT INTERNSHIPS, IT IS MANDATORY TO CHOOSE DIFFERENT DEPARTMENTS. Detailed information on each area is given in the Chapter 3. 5

CHAPTER 2. GENERAL INFORMATION 2.1. Format of the Report. Students' reports should be written in accordance with the following style. 1. Report text must be written as 12 pts Times New Roman, Right-Left Justified 2. 1.5 line spaced paragraphs 3. Page numbers in the footer 4. Section headings formatted with Times New Roman, 14 pts 5. Subsection headings formatted with Times New Roman, 12 pts and bold 6. Spelling and grammar checks must be performed. 7. All tables and figures shown on the report (no more than 30% of the total report) will be explained with at least one paragraph. 8. Information received from another source must be indicated in both text and the references. 9. Report must be written in English and must be delivered as printed output. 10. Page limitations are; i. For 2, 3 or 4 weeks internship, Report must have at least 10 pages ii. For 5 or 6 weeks internship, Report must have at least 15 pages 11. Field Question Limitations are; i. For 2, 3 or 4 weeks internship, At least 2 field questions must be answered in detail. ii. For 5 or 6 weeks internship, At least 3 field questions must be answered in detail. 6

2.2. Submission of the Report 1. Internship Evaluation Form and Intern Assessment Form must be delivered in an enclosed and signed envelope. (for related forms: http://ie.eng.marmara.edu.tr/staj/ ) 2. Ensure that your company advisor completes the Employer Survey Form which must be delivered in an enclosed and signed envelope. (for related forms: http://ie.eng.marmara.edu.tr/staj/ ) 3. In case the manager who will approve the report at the place of internship does not speak English, in addition to the English report, a copy in Turkish can also be prepared and approved. 4. To be able to submit your report, ensure that the first 3 steps given above have been completed and content of your report conforms to the content in the Chapter 3 of this guideline. 5. Reports that don't have sufficient English, will not be accepted and will be given a certain period of time to make the necessary corrections. Reports that are not delivered at the end of the given period will be considered invalid 2.3. Important Days For the Internship Report, Internship Evaluation Form, and Intern Assessment Form i. For summer term internships, up to the announced date in the University Academic calendar ii. For winter semester internships, until the first week of March must be handed over to the relevant internship commission. *****LATE REPORTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED 7

CHAPTER 3. CONTENT All reports must contain the following sections: Cover Page: It is stated at the end of this document. Table of Content List of Figures List of Table 3.1. Chapter 1. Introduction; (at most 2 pages). 3.1.1. Give brief information about the company Including some details such as; the sector in which the company operates, place where company is located, total number of employees, total number of engineers, main products the company manufactures and/or the main services the company offers, foundation date, aggregate production or service capacity etc. (at most 3 paragraphs). 3.1.2. Draw the organization chart of the company. List the departments, explain responsibilities of each department and state the number of employees and the number of industrial engineers in each department. 3.1.3. Summarize all your study weekly by using the timetable given in Table 1. Fill this form at the end of the internship program and take the approval from your supervisor. The table should be signed by the supervisor. 3.1.4. Explain the importance of the tasks you have done in this internship, and list the contributions of these studies to you. Summarize your observations about the company and your impressions of professional life. (at most 2 paragraphs). 8

3.2. Chapter 2. Internship Activities; (no page limitation). Students are required to explain daily activities in detail in this section. Additional information such as drawings, pictures, etc. should be given as appendix pages at the end of the report. 3.3. Chapter 3. Field Questions; (no page limitation). If the duration of the internship plus previously completed internship(s) exceeds 6 weeks; the internship is IE400, otherwise it is IE300 3.3.1. IE 300 Field questions 1. Select a process and explain inputs of the process, operations of the process and output of the process. State the main issues related to the process. 2. Conduct a time study for a specific operation. Collect 5 set of sample that consists of 10 observations. Use the Central Limit Theorem to conclude performance of the operation. 3. Provide brief information about the sector of the company. List the main problems of the sector. Describe possible changes in the sector with Industry 4.0. 4. Conduct a Pareto analysis for a specific problem that you confronted in the Company. 5. Draw a cause and effect diagram for a specific problem. 6. Generate a mathematical model for a specific problem. 3.3.2. IE 400 Field specific questions 3.3.2.1 Production 1. Define the production system in the organization. What are the main inputs and outputs? Is production made to order or made to stock? 2. Construct the bill of materials of one of the products. 3. Are techniques such as lean manufacturing, cellular manufacturing of agile manufacturing used? 10

3.3.2.2. Information Systems 1. Define the information systems in the organization. 2. Construct the entity-relationship diagram for one of the IT systems in the organization. 3. Does the organization use IT systems for outside users? Explain those systems and state whether they are B2B or B2C. 3.3.2.3. Quality Management 1. Explain the quality control activities in the organization you have done your internship. 2. Choose a specific product and explain how quality is described, measured and ensured for this product in the organization. 3. Explain the Total Quality Management applications in the organization. 3.3.2.4. Marketing/Sales 1. Describe the market in which the company operates. What is the size of the market and who are the main competitors of the company? 2. Explain the market position of some of the products of the company (4Ps of marketing). 3. Are there any social or digital marketing applications in the company? Explain briefly. 3.3.2.4. Other For other fields, define and answer three similar questions associated with the industrial engineering methods and techniques that you have used during your internship. 3.4. Chapter 4. System Analysis (at most 1 pages). Think your Company that composed of several subsystems, Answer the following Questions by considering at least one of the Company s subsystem; 11

1. Identify two problems related with the Company Operations. State the importance of the problems. 2. For the solution of the problems, what kinds of data should be collected and what kind of analysis should be done? Students are required to show that they can establish the relationship between IE courses and the company's operations to solve identified problems. It is necessary to critically examine the company and its way of working. 3.5. Chapter 5. Conclusions 3.5.1. Explain how this internship contributed to your self-improvement (at least 1 paragraph) 3.5.2. Answer the questions below. 1. Would you recommend this company to others for internship? Why? 2. Based on problem-solving approaches, what kind of differences have you observed between industrial engineers and other engineers? 3. List the strengths and weaknesses of the Company, depending on your observations. 3.6. REFERENCES The resources used in the internship report should be listed. 3.7. APPENDIX The resources used in the internship report should be listed. 12
