1 The Mission LEAP will empower new supervisors and extremely high performing employees with a heightened self-awareness, advanced knowledge, and value-added leadership in a secure, but challenging environment. The Program LEAP participants are chosen through a competitive nomination and selection process. The LEAP Application Packet is designed to assess qualifications, professional accomplishments, academic skills, and leadership abilities. The information provided will be used as the basis for invitation to participate in LEAP. LEAP is the University s premier leadership development program for professional staff. On August 30 there will be a full-day orientation and introductory meeting. Beginning September 6, 2018, LEAP participants will meet every other Thursday from 1:00 5:00 p.m., with the exception of Sessions III and VI which will meet from 12:00 5:00 p.m. Learning topics will include: Leadership, Performance Management, Professional Branding, Team Facilitation, Change Management, Conflict Resolution & Ethical Decision Making, Valuing Diversity, and Leaving a Legacy. In addition to the program, each employee will meet with a member of the University s executive leadership team, participate in engaging learning activities, and team building exercises. Please read each section carefully. Part I: Nomination LEAP candidates can either self-nominate or be nominated by their respective supervisor or administrator. The dean, director, or department head must provide written support for the candidate to attend LEAP and sign the Nominator s Statement of Commitment. Only Nominator Statements of Commitment signed by a dean, director, or department head will be considered.

2 Part II: Candidate s Resume The candidate must submit a resume including educational background, professional experience, and civic and community organizations or activities. Resumes can be ed, along with the application packet, to Darrell Easley, deasley@hrm.msstate.edu. The candidate must read and sign the Candidate s Statement of Commitment. Please see the session schedule to determine your full participation in the LEAP Program. Part III: Essays The candidate must answer two essay questions. Each candidate s essay responses will be evaluated based on quality, content, grammar, and organization. Once the candidate has completed the application packet and received approval, the application packet should be submitted to the vice president of the candidate s division for review and approval. The vice president should print out the packet and sign it. Completed application packets are due May 18, 2018 on or before 5:00 p.m. Please send the completed application packets to Darrell Easley via , deasley@hrm.msstate.edu, or mail stop Once applications have been received, LEAP finalist candidates will be invited to interview with the program coordinators. Finalist candidates will be notified by July 2 of their selection to the LEAP Program.

3 Part I: Nomination In selecting a candidate to participate in LEAP, your nomination of the candidate and commitment to the program are essential. Your responses will help evaluate: 1) The candidate s potential for benefiting from the program, and 2) How MSU and your department will benefit from investing in the development of this individual Please type or write a brief statement to address each of the following questions (800 word maximum): 1) Why are you recommending that this candidate participate in LEAP?

8 Expectations of the LEAP Program LEAP will empower new supervisors and extremely high performing employees with a heightened self-awareness, advanced knowledge, and value-added leadership in a secure, but challenging environment. To fulfill this mission, we expect every candidate to: Attend all scheduled meetings. The session dates and times are provided in this application packet. Mark your calendar and keep your commitment. Complete all assignments, including reflections and readings. This is critical for leadership development, as well as participation with LEAP colleagues. All assignments must be submitted, even in the case of an absence. Participate in all activities. The activities that are selected for the LEAP program are done with purpose; to help you build relationships and develop as a leader. Remember, the LEAP program operates in a secure, but challenging environment. Schedule and meet with the assigned administrator. The LEAP program is very fortunate to have administrator support. Having an opportunity to meet with an administrator for an hour and share in their experiences is valuable to leadership growth. Candidate s Statement of Commitment I understand that if I am selected to participate in LEAP, I will be involved in an intense four-month educational program. I am aware of and will attend all scheduled meetings and activities, contribute to team discussions, develop an Individual Development Plan, and meet with an assigned administrator. I understand that I am allowed one excused absence. (Arriving more than 10 minutes late to a session will count as an absence.) This is a program that will require a substantial commitment of time, energy, and a dedication to excellence in addition to my assigned job duties and responsibilities. 9 Part III: Essays This section allows the candidate to elaborate on various aspects of his or her qualifications in the form of brief essays. The essays will be evaluated based on quality, content, grammar, and organization. Please provide a typed or written response to each of the following questions. Responses should not exceed two pages per essay. Essay One What leadership qualities have you demonstrated in your current role or in your personal life (civic and/or community organizations)? In addition, provide examples of other relevant workshops or leadership courses that you have completed.
