If we wish to unlock the value of Big Data, the way we think, interact, and do business must change. The sources of data in a modern business are manifold every operational component of an organization, including marketing, human resources, sales, information technology, and research, produces its own trove of data. The efficient coordination of these departments is crucial to a business s success. By deriving insights that link these disparate sources, an organization can become better coordinated in its operations and more efficient with its resources. SHORTAGE OF 140,000 TO190,000 PEOPLE WITH DEEP ANALYTICAL SKILLS Big data analytics is the process of collecting, organizing, and analyzing large sets of data to discover patterns that lead to greater understanding and betterinformed decisions. The responsibility of performing this analysis is given to a new profession: the data scientist. Data scientists require expertise in programming and advanced mathematics as well as the judgement to determine what is real and what matters to an organization. A data scientist leads a team of data professionals who work together to determine key trends in the operations of a business. Big Data is therefore the information asset of the 21st century. With proper analysis, it can lead to more insights, better decisions, and smarter processes. Big Data doesn t just allow us to see more, it allows us to see new, it allows us to see better, and it allows us to see different. There will be a shortage of talent necessary for organizations to take advantage of big data. By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.
