Institute : SECAB institute of and Technology, Bijapur, affiliated to Visveswaraiah Technological University, Belgaum,. Period : 15/06/2005 to 30/06/2006 DISSERTATION: Ph. D Finite Element Analysis of Two Symmetric and Asymmetric Interfering Footings Resting on Linearly and Non-Linearly Elastic Foundation Beds Supervisor: Prof. Prabir Kumar Basudhar and Dr. Priyanka Ghosh Appropriate 2D (plane strain) or 3D finite element analysis is carried out for two interfering rigid strip (plane strain) or square or rectangular footings resting on surface of homogeneous and nonhomogeneous linearly elastic foundation soil bed of finite and semi-infinite depths. The effect of interference on settlement characteristic behaviour of interfering footings is observed considering interfering footing to be symmetric or asymmetric based on footing size, shape, loading condition, combination and orientation of footings and a case of interfering footings subjected to inclined load, also interfering footing experiencing uniform settlement irrespective of their size is studied. Similarly 2D and 3D finite element analysis is carried out for rigid strip or square or rectangular footings subjected to simultaneously applied vertical loading and resting on non-linearly elastic cohesionless dense/loose foundation beds considering possible symmetry or asymmetry of interfering footings based on shape, size and footing combinations. The non-linearly elastic soil is approximated by hyperbolic soil model as proposed by Duncan and Chang (1970) and the effect of interference on settlement and bearing pressure
is observed and also a case of interference of new footing with that of existing footing is explored. 2D and 3D finite element analysis of interfering footings resting on linearly and non-linearly elastic foundation beds are carried out by developing object oriented computer program in MATLAB R2008a. M. Tech Analysis of Two Closely Spaced Surface Footings Using Finite Element Method Supervisor: Prof. Prabir Kumar Basudhar The thesis pertains to the studies on the interference of two closely spaced surface footings subjected to superimposed loads and resting on linearly elastic soil beds considering both symmetric (two footings of same size) and non-symmetric (two footings of different size) cases. Analysis is carried out considering the modulus of elasticity to be constant and linearly varying with depth. For strip footing with its length very long with respect to its width is modeled as a plane strain problem while footings with smaller length to width ratio is analyzed as a three dimensional problem. Parametric studies are made to see the effect of the clear spacing between the footings, Poisson s ratio, variation of modulus of elasticity with depth, width of the footings, varying length to width ratio of the footings, on the settlement of the footings.
