Kennco Catalog 23 Manufacturing Serving YOU since 1973! From Design to Manufacturing, Kennco is the Best You Can Buy!

A Few Words About Our Company Kennco Manufacturing has been building farm equipment for plasticulture and row crop farming since it was formed by Ken McElwain in Our industrial site occupies twelve acres of a forty-three acre property. Kennco has a total of 52,200 square feet under roof, and about thirty-five employees. Kennco s product line is complete in that we build equipment for every phase of the farming process from initial ground preparation through field cleanup after harvest. Few manufacturers offer such a wide range of products to their customers. Kennco s small size is a benefit to the customer. We are large enough to have specialists in the manufacturing process, but small enough to hand-build every component and machine we sell. Because we build to order, we can customize your equipment to your field's exact requirements. We are fiercely proud of our work. We patent new products. We aren't afraid to improve some of our older products. Above all, what you see here is OUR product. It is the best, it is KENNCO. Many of our products are shown in this catalog, but we are constantly developing new items. If you are looking for something specific, please contact us today. 3 GRADER LEVELER Ground Preparation Equipment Our grader leveler is an implement with a variety of uses. It is used to smooth and level small areas such as farm lanes and roads, small gardens, terraces, and other difficult-toaccess areas. It follows close to the back of the tractor for better leveling on wavy terrain and for turning in small areas. BP050 8 ft (2.4 m) wide grader leveler BP ft (3.0 m) wide grader leveler BP ft (3.7 m) wide grader leveler Our standard grader levelers fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. LEVEL BOARD A level board is used to apply the finishing touches to an un-level field. A correctly leveled field has good irrigation and drainage characteristics. The level board leaves a smooth finish and does not create or deposit washboard surfaces. As the level board passes over uneven terrain in the field, its blades scrape soil from the high areas and roll it into the low areas. Hydraulic cylinders connected to the tongue and rear roller are used to control the front to back height of the level board. Soil is moved from side to side as the level board passes over an area, filling in low spots. Any excess soil not needed to fill low areas is passed out the rear of the machine to the side. A finishing roller compacts the soil to minimize blowing dust and to show the quality of the leveling action. The Kennco level board includes hydraulic adjustment to prevent the machine from digging too deeply into the soil if the tractor passes through a low spot in the field or begins to experience wheel slippage. The leveling blades have cutting edges that can be removed when they wear and new ones welded on. The level board can be set up with laser or GPS leveling systems. BP100 8 ft (2.4 m) wide level board BP ft (3.0 m) wide level board BP ft (3.7 m) wide level board Standard level boards are pulled from the tractor drawbar. Hydraulically operated equipment is supplied with quick coupling male nipples to connect to the tractor unless otherwise requested. 3

DITCH PLOW Ground Preparation Equipment Kennco s ditch plow makes a narrow irrigation ditch and distributes the displaced soil evenly on both sides of the ditch in one pass. Our standard ditch plow is designed to dig a ditch 10 (25 cm) deep and 16 (41 cm) wide. Ditch dimensions will vary with adjustments to the three-point hitch position, and changing soil and environmental conditions. As the ditch plow works, it spreads the displaced soil a distance anywhere from 3 ft (0.9 m) to 4.5 ft (1.4 m) to either side of the ditch. The distance can be adjusted as desired by the operator. A hydraulic option is available to allow adjustment while ditching. Kennco s ditch plow is ideal for digging irrigation ditches, drainage ditches to remove excess water from the field, and for ditch maintenance during the growing season. Box blade attachments are available for use when the plow re-digs a ditch. They level the newly displaced soil beside the ditch without throwing it against the side of the bed or allowing it to fall back into the ditch. BP325 A variety of different custom sizes are available to meet different customer needs. BP320 Center V type ditch plow, manual adjustment BP325 Center V type ditch plow, hydraulic adjustment BP340 Center V type ditch plow point only Our standard ditch plows fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Hydraulically operated equipment is supplied with quick coupling male nipples to connect to the tractor unless otherwise requested. DITCH CLOSER Kennco s ditch closer is another easy to use tool that saves time in field preparation. The ditch closer is designed to pull the soil from the sides of an irrigation or drainage ditch back into the ditch, filling the ditch and leveling the surrounding soil. The center of the ditch closer is open so that extra soil is piled in the center of the machine where the ditch was. This excess soil prevents a depression over the ditch as the soil settles with weather and time. BP ft (4.3 m) ditch closer BP ft (4.9 m) ditch closer Our standard ditch closers fit three-point Category II standard and quick hitches. Customized sizes are available to meet different customer needs. 4

Ground Preparation Equipment BOX BLADE SCRAPER Kennco's box blade scraper is a very useful tool when preparing a field which has been out of production for a significant amount of time or which is extremely un-level. By design, box blade scrapers allow you to move soil from one area of the field to another. Instead of simply leveling an area in a field, you can move soil from a high to a low area. Kennco's box blade scraper is unique in that it includes a walking wheel frame on the back of the machine. This prevents jarring bounces when passing over dips or bumps in the field for better leveling. It also includes hydraulic height adjustment and can be adapted to work with laser or GPS leveling systems. Customized sizes can be fabricated. BP075 7 ft (2.1 m) wide box blade scraper BP ft (4.3 m) wide box blade scraper Standard box scrapers are pulled from the tractor drawbar. Hydraulically operated equipment is supplied with quick coupling male nipples to connect to the tractor unless otherwise requested. TOOL CARRIER Prior to bed formation, it is very common to make a pass through the field with a false-bedder or pre-bedding tool carrier. Our standard tool carrier is a rugged 20 ft (6.1 m) reinforced tool bar. The tool carrier is commonly used with bedding disks to raise a false bed, or ridge of soil. Growers who do not use plastic mulch sometimes plant directly onto this false bed without further shaping. False bedding is a good practice that can help improve the quality of bed formation. The bedding disks help loosen the soil while moving it into proper row center positioning. Mounding the soil into its proper row center position will help with bed formation because it places the soil into the center of the bed. This means that less soil will have to be moved when you pass through the field with your bed shaper. If the false bed is raised and allowed to sit for a day or two, it can collect moisture and dissipate air trapped within the soil to improve compaction of the bed. BP ft (6.1 m) wide tool carrier Our standard tool carriers fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Kennco does not recommend mounting more than 3 sets of bedder disks to its BP645 tool carrier. Customized sizes and options are available. 5

CROSS DITCHER Ground Preparation Equipment BP750 In many geographic regions or field situations, the removal of excess water from the field requires additional efforts. Our cross ditcher is a tool that cuts a channel in a bed or berm to allow water movement in the field across the planting beds or into a drainage ditch. We make a single row unit that can be used on berms or individual planting beds and a three row unit to cut cross ditches through three beds at a time. Cross ditchers are powered by your tractor s hydraulic system, and are controlled by the tractor driver. The driver moves to the location in the field where you need the crossditch. After lowering the implement over the bed, the driver operates the side shovels that close into the center of the bed, and cuts out a section. The operator lifts the cross ditcher and moves to the next location. As he moves the tractor to the next spot, he opens the side shovels and they feather the collected soil out into the row middles. BP700 1 bed cross ditcher, centered behind tractor BP750 1 bed berm cutter, offset to right side BP740 3 bed cross ditcher, 6 foot row center BP741 3 bed cross ditcher, 5 foot row center When ordering a cross ditcher, the customer must specify the exact distance off center required, or the row center between planting beds. Also provide the height and width of the planting beds to be cut. All standard cross ditchers fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Hydraulically operated equipment is supplied with quick coupling male nipples to connect to the tractor unless otherwise requested. TARP LAYER FOR FUMIGATION SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. PARTS ARE NOT STOCKED. Our tarp layer is a special piece of equipment that is used for broadcast fumigation applications. It is used to completely cover a field with plastic to minimize dissipation of the gas from the soil. The unit lays the plastic mulch over the soil and includes a system that glues two side-by-side pieces together to create a field sized tarp. PS ft tarp layer for fumigation Gas knives are included. Kennco does not provide hose, fittings or other components of plumbing for fumigation systems. All standard tarp layers fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. 6

BEDDING DISKS Ground Preparation Equipment - Options Our standard bedding disks mount on a 2¼ in (5.7 cm) standard tool bar, such as our BP645 tool carrier. They are positioned on the bar to match your desired row centers. The BP645 tool carrier can carry as many as three sets of bedding disks to raise false beds as narrow as 48 in (1.2 m) row centers or as wide as 72 in (1.8 m). Our bedding disks are extremely rugged and versatile. Their height in relation to the tool carrier can be adjusted vertically in addition to full 180 rotation. The angle of the blade can be adjusted too. They are constructed of massive steel castings with cross trussing for support. BP525 BP505 BP505 Single blade bedding disk set (2 disks and 2 mounting brackets per set) BP525 Double blade bedding disk set (4 disks and 2 mounting brackets per set) ROW MARKER Because one of the basic reasons to prebed a field is proper spacing of the beds, a tool carrier is incomplete without row markers. Our BP647 row marker attaches to our BP645 tool carrier and operates from the tractor s hydraulic system. of the tool carrier. Shorter or longer row markers are available upon request. Most tool carriers are equipped with two row markers, one on each side. BP647 Hydraulic row marker BP647S Hydraulic row marker - Short (2 required for BP645 tool carrier) Our standard row marker is adjustable to reach 5 ft (1.5 m) to 8 ft (2.4 m) from its mount on the side GAUGE WHEELS Gauge wheels are another useful accessory for our tool carrier. Our BP650 gauge wheels serve several purposes when mounted to our tool carrier. They support the weight of the implement, keep it balanced and level, and prevent the bedding disks from digging too deeply. A tool carrier requires two gauge wheels, one mounted on each side. Each gauge wheel includes height adjustment. BP650 Gauge wheel assembly (set of 2) for BP645 tool carrier 7

Bed Shapers - Superbedders BED SHAPERS - GENERAL INFORMATION Planting crops on top of a raised and shaped bed is very popular in vegetable production. It has several benefits: Eliminates soil compaction in the root zone from foot or tractor traffic Allows effective use of plastic mulch Higher plant density and higher yields Improved control of water runoff and removal Protection from plant disease and pests Better control of irrigation Allows precise fertilizer and nutrient placement Allows precise fumigation and pesticide placement More efficient harvesting Easier field cleanup and preparation for a second crop Nothing before the Kennco superbedder produced a perfectly shaped bed. We built our reputation making bedders that produce a completely filled, stable bed. Our customers began referring to them as superbedders, and the name stuck. Our basic superbedder consists of a frame with mold board plows (sweeps) that roll the soil into a press pan. The press pan is what shapes the bed, compressing the soil as it passes through the pan. Each press pan is custom built to your height and width requirement. With a superbedder, you can do more than just raise and shape a planting bed. Superbedders accept gas knifes and bottle racks so you can apply fumigant into the soil of the bed as it is shaped. We can mount fertilizer hoppers or liquid tanks on our superbedders to apply dry or liquid fertilizers, or a soil incorporated herbicide, during bed formation. Superbedders work with an accessory to lay drip-irrigation tape on or below the bed surface. Superbedders can also accept an attachment to lay plastic mulch while you are shaping your raised bed. 1 BED SUPERBEDDER press pans. Press pans are custom built to the size and shape of the bed desired and are not adjustable. We have found that rigid, nonadjustable, press pans produce better quality, more consistent beds. 1 bed superbedders are designed to raise and shape individual planting beds. Our standard superbedders shape beds on 5 ft (1.5 m) or 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers. When ordering a superbedder, it is important to specify your exact row centers. The row center determines the width of the sweeps, which are not adjustable. Superbedders are sold in combination with replaceable It is easier and quicker to replace a pan than adjusting nuts and bolts on an adjustable pan. When the press pan is worn out, it is quick and easy to remove by simply unbolting the adjustment turnbuckles and unpinning the pan from the frame. If you need two different sized beds, you can use the same superbedder with two different press pans. See the section on press pans on the next page for information on specifying your press pan dimensions. BP400 1 bed superbedder for 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers BP401 1 bed superbedder for 5 ft (1.8 m) row centers BP404 1 bed superbedder built to custom row centers Press pans for superbedders are sold separately. All standard superbedders fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. 8

Bed Shapers - Press Pans and Liners SPECIFYING A PRESS PAN A Bed width C Bed width at base D Crown B Bed height A bed press pan forms and compresses the soil to a uniform shape and density. Because there are no industry standard dimensions for planting beds, we custom manufacture each press pan to the customer s specifications for bed width [A], bed height [B], and row center spacing [E]. Our press pans typically have a 1¼ in (3 cm) crown [D] at the center of the bed. This helps water run off the bed, which reduces disease and nutrient leaching. Planting beds are wider at the base to produce a stable bed that will not collapse during plastic laying and plant setting. Our standard pans increase bed width at the base [C] by 2 in (5 cm) for every 3 in (8 cm) of bed height [B]. For example, a bed that is 24 in (61 cm) wide [A] and 3 in (8 cm) E Row center spacing high [B] will be 26 in (66 cm) wide at its base [C]. A bed that is 36 in (91 cm) wide [A] and 6 in (15 cm) high [B] will be 40 in (102 cm) wide at its base [C]. Row center spacing is important. If the bed is too wide for the row centers, your sweeps may not be able to pull enough soil from the sides to fill the center of the bed. For example, you may have difficulty shaping a bed wider than 40 in (102 cm) with a 60 in (152 cm) row center. Soil preparation, soil type, and the addition of various bedding attachments can all affect your bed dimensions and your ability to shape a good quality bed. Best results are generally achieved when the bed width is about half of the row center. We suggest that you select a bed no wider than 65% of the row center. BP99X9 Unlined press pan with 48 top, customer specified width & height BP99X8 Unlined press pan with 60 top, customer specified width & height BP99X7 Unlined press pan with 72 top, customer specified width & height Press pans are sold separately from superbedders. Press pans which form beds taller than 8 in (20cm) are available, but prebedding may be required in some soils for a good quality bed. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. UHMW LINER FOR PRESS PAN Soil is very abrasive and will wear out your steel press pan. A UHMW liner has high abrasion resistance and greatly extends the life of the press pan. When the liner wears out, it can be replaced for much less cost than the steel press pan. We recommend UHMW liners for all press pans. In addition, there are many soils that will stick to metal surfaces. The self-lubricating properties of UHMW liners minimize soil sticking and improve the quality of the bed. 10 Bed Shapers - Powerbedder and Superbedders MULTIPLE BED SUPERBEDDER There are many large growers who want to shape more than one bed in a single pass through the field. For them, we manufacture superbedders which shape two and three raised beds at a time. We also build fully custom units with four or more beds. Their practicality depends on the row center requirements and available tractor power. An important thing to remember when considering a multiple row superbedder is the levelness of your land. A multiple row superbedder requires a very level field so that each and every bed is shaped at the same height, with the same amount of available soil. In addition, you should consider how the superbedder will follow the wheel tracks of your tractor. It is more difficult to shape a bed directly behind a tractor tire due to soil compaction. BP410 2 bed superbedder for 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers BP411 2 bed superbedder for 5 ft (1.5 m) row centers BP414 2 bed superbedder for custom row centers BP420 3 bed superbedder for 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers BP421 3 bed superbedder for 5 ft (1.5 m) row centers BP424 3 bed superbedder for custom row centers BP425 3 bed superbedder for 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers, with 6000 lb (2727 kg) fertilizer distributor BP426 SS 3 bed superbedder for 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers, with 6000 lb (2727 kg) fertilizer distributor BP434 4 bed superbedder for 30 to 72 row centers Press pans for superbedders are sold separately. All standard multi-bed superbedders are fabricated to fit standard three-point Category II or III hitches. POWERBEDDER Proper soil preparation is extremely important in order to shape a perfect planting bed. Some soil types do not lend themselves to perfect bed formation because they clod or harden very easily. A powerbedder is a useful tool that tills the soil and shapes a pressed planting bed at the same time. The tillers are powered by the tractor s PTO shaft. Our powerbedder is more than just a tillage tool with a shaper mounted to it. It is an extremely rugged piece of equipment that forms a tight, pressed planting bed. Some options that are useful tools in conjunction with powerbedders are row markers and UHMW press pan liners. Our row markers are described in detail on page 7 of this catalog. They allow the operator to maintain accurate spacing between planting beds as he moves through the field. Available Options: UHMW bed press pan liners Hydraulic row markers SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. PARTS ARE NOT STOCKED. BP430 1 bed powerbedder for 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers Press pans for powerbedders are sold separately. All standard powerbedders fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Custom row centers are available upon customer request. Press pan dimensions must be specified by the customer. All powerbedders are manufactured to work the soil at a level even with the base of the bed. Other depths are available upon customer request. Although many of the attachments we manufacture for our equipment will attach to our powerbedders, we do not recommend their use due to machine vibration and tractor horsepower limitations. It is the customer s responsibility to make sure their tractor horsepower is satisfactory for their equipment. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. 10

CHOP GATE Bed Shapers - Options SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. PARTS ARE NOT STOCKED. Chop gates are important to growers who work fields that require a tremendous amount of water management. Our chop gate attaches to the back of a superbedder or powerbedder for the purpose of creating a break, or a cross ditch, in the bed. The cross ditch allows for sideways movement of runoff water in the field. Our chop gate operates hydraulically. It can be powered by a PTO driven hydraulic pump or the tractor s hydraulic system. The chop gate is controlled by a field worker, who rides on top of the equipment in a safe position, or by the tractor driver. The operator controls the chop gate by activating the hydraulics at any location in the field. The operator completely controls cross ditching placement. BP500 PTO powered 3 or 4 bed chop gate for superbedder BP501 Tractor hydraulic system powered 3 or 4 bed chop gate superbedder Chop gates can be installed to existing equipment, but must be installed at Kennco. Call our sales department for weights, dimensions, and for information on custom chop gate designs. THREE-POINT AND TOOL BAR MOUNTS FOR PRESS PANS For various reasons, it is sometimes necessary to reshape planting beds. We manufacture a three-point hitch that carries a press pan and a mounting connection that attaches a press pan to a tool bar for this purpose. BP626 with optional press pan attached Sometimes the sides of a planting bed will fall or crumble after shaping, before plastic mulch is laid. Sometimes the grower will want to fumigate the bed after it is shaped, and need to repair the gas knife damage and repress the bed to keep the fumigant from escaping. This can be done using a press pan mounted on a three-point hitch or a tool bar. A press pan mounted to a three-point hitch or tool bar cannot be used to pull and raise a shaped planting bed by itself. It must be used for reshaping purposes only, or it may be used in combination with a superbedder. BP626 Three-point mounted frame for bed press pan BP631 Tool bar mounted frame for bed press pan All three-point mounts are fabricated for standard three-point Category II hitch connections unless otherwise requested by the customer. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions 11

Bed Shapers - Fumigation Options FUMIGATION GAS KNIVES We manufacture a wide variety of fumigation gas knives that can be attached to our superbedders and plastic mulch layers. The items shown are our standard products, which have been proven to be effective for soil fumigation. We also fabricate custom gas knives to work in special applications. Contact our sales department for more information about custom gas knives. Our 55081, 55083, and gas knives are most commonly used with superbedders. They mount to a 2¼ inch (6 cm) tool bar, which is built into the superbedder frame, so that they extend back into the throat of the press pan. The fumigant is placed into the bed just as the soil is rolled and compacted to form the bed. The and knives place the fumigant about 6 in (15 cm) below the top surface of the bed and have limited adjustability. The knife places the fumigant about 8 in (20 cm) farther back into the throat of the press pan than the Our gas knife places the fumigant deeper, about 10 in (25 cm) below the surface of the bed. Our and gas knives are used specifically with press pans or pan-type mulch layers like those shown later in this catalog. They mount inside a press pan and bolt directly to the top surface. They are commonly used to apply fumigant just before the bed is covered with plastic mulch. All of our gas knifes are fabricated with hardened steel for longer wear life and ¼ in (6 mm) stainless steel delivery tubes. The number of gas knives used with a superbedder varies, based on each grower s soil conditions, fumigant, and application method. As a general rule, growers usually position one gas knife for every 12 in (30 cm) of bed width. For example, a superbedder shaping a bed 36 in (91 cm) wide will usually include either 3 or 4 gas knives Standard gas knife for flat top pans or pan-type mulch layers Standard superbedder gas knife Curved gas knife for use with bed press pans Extra long gas knife for deeper placement in the throat of the press pan Extra depth gas knife for deeper placement beneath the bed surface Mounting bracket for superbedder/tool bar mounted gas knives Positioning of gas knives, and number of gas knives attached to implements, is the sole decision of the customer. Kennco does not provide hose, fittings or other components of plumbing for fumigation systems. Contact Kennco s sales department if you need a gas knife with different specifications than described in this catalog. 12

Bed Shapers - Fumigation Options GAS BOTTLE RACK AND TRACTOR-MOUNTED PIG RACK BP660 In addition to gas knives, we also manufacture a variety of mounting racks for gas bottles and pigs. Our single bottle racks clamp onto plastic layers and superbedders as a quick and secure way to add carrying capacity for round gas bottles. Our standard gas bottle racks secure either three or five 250 lb gas bottles. They can be mounted to the top of a Kennco superbedder or any other flat surface available. They can also be provided with mounts to bolt onto a tractor at the customer s request. They include dividers between the bottles and a ratchet strap to keep them secure, along with a mount for the pressurizing tank. Our pig racks for fumigation tanks can be mounted directly to a tractor. Our most common pig rack is our model BP690 hydraulically lifted rack. It includes a support frame that bolts directly to the front of your tractor and a lift rack that operates hydraulically. The lift rack can be raised or lowered hydraulically to load and unload pig tanks. The BP690 also includes space to mount additional gas bottles and/or pressurizing tanks. BP670 Gas bottle racks and pig tank mounts are products that are very customized by nature. Because of the many different sized tanks or bottles, many different types of fumigation products, and many different types of tractors used in agriculture, it is difficult to make a mount that fits everybody s needs. When you contact us to order a rack for gas bottles or tanks it is important to provide us with the manufacturer and model number of your tractor, the exact specifications of your bottles and tanks, and any other specifications or dimensions required to size the mount correctly. SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. PARTS ARE NOT STOCKED. BP690 BP660 14" Gas bottle rack-single clamp-on BP661 10" Gas bottle rack-single clamp-on BP662 14" Gas bottle rack-single for 1 row Superbedder BP663 10" Gas bottle rack-single for 1 row Superbedder BP670 3 gas bottle rack, includes mount for pressurizing tank and tie down strap BP671 5 gas bottle rack, includes mount for pressurizing tank and tie down strap BP690 Single pig tank rack, hydraulic lift, includes mount for pressurizing tank and tie down strap BP691 Double pig tank rack, hydraulic lift, includes mount for pressurizing tank and tie down strap Gas bottle racks can mount directly to Kennco superbedders. The customer must provide tractor mounting information for any bottle or tank racks mounted directly to tractors. Include this information when contacting our sales department for quotations or orders. Kennco does not provide hose, fittings or other components of plumbing for fumigation systems. Hydraulically operated equipment is supplied with quick coupling male nipples to connect to the tractor unless otherwise requested. 13

Bed Shapers - Options ADD-ON PLASTIC LAYER Many growers like to lay plastic mulch over beds at the same time that the beds are raised and shaped. This eliminates one pass through the field with a tractor. Kennco makes an attachment for our superbedders that allows the grower to lay plastic mulch on a planting bed as it is shaped. The attachment bolts onto the back of a superbedder frame. It is functionally equivalent to our high speed plastic mulch layer which is described on page 20. This attachment allows the grower to form a planting bed and cover it with plastic mulch in a single pass. We do not recommend that growers purchase our plastic mulch add-on and attempt to modify their existing superbedders. There are several modifications to the superbedder that need to take place. If you want to add a plastic layer to an existing superbedder, we suggest sending the unit to Kennco for the necessary modifications. PS204 1 bed add-on plastic layer, custom row centers PS206 1 bed add-on plastic layer for up to 60 row center PS205 1 bed add-on plastic layer for up to 72 row center PS207 2 bed add-on plastic layer, custom row centers PS210 3 bed add-on plastic layer, custom row centers PS214 4 bed add-on plastic layer, custom row centers Please specify your exact plastic mulch width, row centers, and bed size when ordering. BEDDING DISKS BP525 BP505 It is very common to mount bedding disks on a superbedder. In heavier soil conditions, or with wide planting beds, growers may find that they have trouble filling the center of the bed. A set of bedding disks mounted on the front tool bar of the superbedder help move soil into the center of the bed, ensuring that it is solid and filled from side to side. Our bedding disks are extremely rugged and versatile. Their height in relation to the tool carrier can be adjusted vertically in addition to full 180 rotation. The angle of the blade can be adjusted too. They are constructed of massive steel castings with cross trussing for support. BP505 Single blade bedding disk set (2 disks and 2 mounting brackets per set) BP525 Double blade bedding disk set (4 disks and 2 mounting brackets per set) 14

Bed Shapers - Options IRRIGATION DRIP TAPE LAYER AND SUBSOIL SHANK Some growers lay drip irrigation tape while they are shaping their planting beds. This allows them to put the tape below the surface of the bed using a subsoil shank for placement. Our drip irrigation tape layer attaches to the tool bar on our superbedder or any other tool bar. It includes a stand to hold one or two reels of drip tape on the machine and a ground feed tube which lays the drip tape on or below the surface of the bed. The ground tube is made of stainless steel and includes a heat-treated wear guard. A smooth heavy-duty polymer guide funnel minimizes cuts and tears in the drip tape as it enters the ground tube. The funnel is very simple and inexpensive to replace, compared to repairing other manufacturers guide systems. The drip tape layer includes a disc-brake mechanism to prevent spool backlash during starts and stops. Its spindle and side plates accept all styles of drip irrigation tape. The mounting brackets for the reel stand and ground tube allow sideways adjustment so the irrigation tape can be located exactly where desired on the planting bed. Drip Tape Layer A variety of different ground tubes are also available. Round ground tubes are most often used because they allow the drip tape to pass freely with minimal clogging or restrictions. Flat ground tubes are used when growers have a difficult time getting the drip tape to lay flat on the bed. Subsoil shank ROW MARKER Ground feed tube Row markers are frequently added to superbedders to ensure that the planting beds are spaced evenly apart. Our BP647 row marker can be mounted on a superbedder frame and operates from the tractor s hydraulic system. 16 Fertilizer Applicators - Options for Bed Shapers FERTILIZER APPLICATORS FOR BED SHAPERS We also make a bandcast catch hopper and distributor which spreads the fertilizer across the top of the bed evenly instead of in a line. BP823 When ordering a fertilizer hopper with a superbedder, it is important to specify whether to feed fertilizer into the throat of the press pan, which mixes the fertilizer with the soil, or behind the press pan onto the formed bed. Placing the fertilizer into the soil as it is rolled and mixed gives the benefit of mixing, but reduces control over placement. Most of our customers prefer precise placement. Our fertilizer hoppers are constructed of stainless steel or 14 gauge hot-rolled steel that is cold-galvanized before painting. Hydraulic Motor One option that separates Kennco's superbedder from all others is that our frame and superstructure are strong enough to add a dry fertilizer hopper. This allows the grower to apply fertilizer or other nutrients to the planting bed at the time it is formed. Our 600 lb (273 kg) and 1,300 lb (591 kg) hoppers fit on 1 bed superbedders. For multiple bed superbedders, we make hoppers that hold about 2000 lb (909 kg) of fertilizer per bed. For example, a 6000 lb (2727 kg) hopper fits a 3 bed superbedder. Exit Door Adjustment Flow Control Valve Feed Chain Fertilizer is delivered to the exit door by a stainless steel feed chain. A 6 in wide chain is used on our 600 lb (273 kg) hopper. 12 in chain is used on larger models. The fertilizer application rate is controlled by the feed chain speed and exit door opening height. A flow control valve on the hydraulic motor controls the chain speed. The exit door opening height is adjustable by a simple screw mechanism. After going through the exit door, fertilizer falls into a stainless steel catch hopper for distribution on the bed. Catch hoppers are custom built for the application method desired. Fertilizer can be BP833 banded through 1, 2, or 3 tubes for exact placement in the bed. The tubes are adjustable from side to side to any position on the bed. They lay a line of fertilizer about 2-3 in (5-7.5 cm) wide. In most cases, banding tubes are used with "shoes" that are welded into the superbedder press pan. Each shoe makes a trench about 2 in (5 cm) deep and 3 in (7.5 cm) wide. When adjusted properly, the banding tube drops the fertilizer directly into this small trench in the top of the bed. 17 Fertilizer Applicators FERTILIZER APPLICATORS BP953 tractor, straddling a single planting bed. Utilizing the same catch hoppers as our other units, it drops fertilizer on the surface of the planting bed in 1, 2, or 3 bands, or evenly (bandcast) across the top of the bed. This unit is constructed of 12 gage steel that is cold galvanized prior to painting. It is also available in stainless steel. It uses a 12 in feed chain that runs the length of the unit to completely empty the hopper. The chain is ground driven by a hydraulically engaged wheel. Kennco doesn t just make attachments to apply fertilizer with our superbedders. We make a variety of implements specifically for nutrient application. Our 1 bed fertilizer applicator is also available for use as a broadcast spreader. The catch hopper can be replaced with a hydraulically controlled spinner to spread a swath of fertilizer on any field. Our 3 bed fertilizer applicator is a 10,000 lb (4545 kg) rig that straddles 3 planting beds to apply dry fertilizer to the surface of shaped beds. In its standard form, it is constructed of 12 gauge steel that is cold galvanized prior to painting. It is also available in stainless steel. The feed chain is driven by a hydraulic motor on our standard units, but a ground wheel drive system is also available. The ground drive wheels are engaged hydraulically. A 12 in stainless steel chain is used to move fertilizer to the exit door, which is adjustable to control the application rate. Laying 2 bands of fertilizer on each bed Stainless steel over the top (bandcast) distributor The 3 bed fertilizer applicator is pulled by the tractor s drawbar. A smaller tractor can be used to pull it through the field compared to that required to carry a superbedder and 6000 pound fertilizer distributor on a three-point hitch. A separate fertilizer applicator also gives the grower flexibility in timing nutrient applications that a superbeddermounted applicator does not. BP954 Ground Wheel Drive Our 1 bed fertilizer applicator is also a 10,000 lb (455 kg) rig, but it is designed to apply fertilizer to a single bed or to operate as a broadcast distributor. 18 Liquid Fertilizer Injection Wheel LIQUID FERTILIZER INJECTION WHEEL Our fertilizer injection wheel lets you apply liquid fertilizer through plastic mulch for supplemental feeding on an existing crop, or when growing a second or third crop on a bed. As the wheel is pulled over the top of a planting bed it punches a hole through the mulch every 8 inches (20 cm) and leaves a shot of fertilizer. Several wheels can be used on a bed as close as about 6 inches (15 cm) on center. The wheel pivots for use on the top or side of the bed. The wheels are designed to float along the surface of the planting bed without down force from the tractor. The only pressure they exert on the bed surface should be from their own weight and the spring mounting arm. When a tip is penetrating the plastic, the wheel s rotary valve mechanism allows fertilizer to flow to that tip. This ensures that the fertilizer is applied only where it is needed. The valve timing is easily adjustable. Our patented rotary valve mechanism is available only on Kennco s injector wheel. Each tip has a ball type check valve which retains leftover fertilizer in the tip s supply tube to further reduce fertilizer waste. The wheel comes with assorted flow regulator orifices. In combination with fluid pressure and tractor speed, the flow regulator allows precision application of the correct amount of fertilizer. The wheel is constructed of stainless steel and industrial plastics for corrosion resistance. The basic wheel includes a spring type wheel mounting arm, assorted flow control orifices, and application rate charts. Wheel carriers can be custom built to your requirements. They range from a simple tool bar type carrier that uses tractor mounted tanks, to elaborate self-centering rigs that incorporate hydraulic controls. 19 Plastic Mulch Layers PLASTIC MULCH LAYERS - GENERAL INFORMATION It serves as a barrier between the fruit and soil to keep the fruit cleaner and prevent rotting. It improves the effectiveness of soil fumigants by preventing dissipation from the soil to the atmosphere. The keys to laying plastic mulch are to lay it tight and to bury the edges well so that it stays on the bed. Kennco mulch layers do this. When laying plastic mulch, it is important to make sure that it is centered equally over the top of the planting bed and that the plastic layer is square. It is difficult to do this with equipment that bolts together on a single tool bar. Bolted connections loosen and slide, and they require constant adjustment. Our standard products have a welded frame instead of components that are bolted to a tool bar. Our plastic mulch layers outperform other equipment available for plasticulture. Our experience in laying plastic mulch, and in equipment design, allows us to build you a piece of equipment that lays plastic mulch tightly and permanently over either a raised bed or flat ground. Plastic mulch provides a variety of advantages to growers involved in fruit and vegetable production. Plastic mulch increases soil temperature, enhancing germination and speeding plant growth. Quick crop development means an earlier harvest and increased early yields. It inhibits weed growth within the planting bed. Dark mulches prevent light from reaching weeds under the mulch. It improves control over soil moisture content by reducing loss of moisture from the planting bed, and provides greater moisture uniformity when used with drip irrigation. It prevents leaching of fertilizer from direct contact with rainfall. It reduces soil compaction and erosion around the crop root system caused by heavy pounding rains. 1) Cross section of a raised bed before laying plastic 2) The cup or tuck area after the boat cuts the groove 3) The completed process after the hiller disks bury the plastic Job done correctly with proper width plastic mulch Wrong: plastic too narrow How to size plastic mulch It is extremely important to bury a sufficient amount of plastic mulch so that it does not come loose over time. Most growers find that at least 6 in (15 cm) of plastic on each edge should be buried. Any smaller amount is difficult to bury and to keep buried. Example of how to calculate the needed plastic mulch width to sufficiently cover the bed and bury the edges. If your bed is 36 in (91 cm) wide at the top and 8 in (20 cm) high: 36 in + (8 in + 8 in) + (6 in + 6 in) = 64 in wide or 91 cm + (20 cm + 20 cm) + (15 cm + 15 cm) = 161 cm Plastic mulch should not be greatly oversized. Too much extra mulch can wrap around the stretching wheels and block the soil from rolling into the burying cup. 19

Plastic Mulch Layers - High Speed 1 BED HIGH SPEED PLASTIC MULCH LAYER Boats Our most popular mulch layer is the high speed plastic layer. Built around a heavy-duty welded frame, it carries two rolls of plastic mulch. The machine operator can switch from one roll of plastic mulch to the second "on-the-go" in the middle of the field, without having to stop. This allows full use of every roll of plastic and prevents stops in the middle of the field that slow production. It is easy to adjust this machine for different plastic mulch widths. The high speed mulch layer has boats that reshape the side of the bed and dig a "cup" where the edge of the mulch will be buried. An adjustable braking mechanism slows the rollers that carry the roll of mulch to stretch it as it is laid. The crown roller rides just above or lightly on the planting bed to smooth the plastic along the bed top. It is shaped to match the crown in most planting beds so that it does not flatten or compact the crown. Crown Roller Stretching Wheels Closing Disks The stretching wheels pull the plastic down the side of the bed and press it into the burying cup. Closing disks roll the soil that was removed by the boats back over the plastic in the cup, holding it tightly on the bed. Support wheels on the back of the machine can be used to pack the soil over the edge of the plastic, provided that they do not touch the side of the bed. Our high speed mulch layer is available with a variety of options that make it an extremely versatile tool. It can be used with an optional press pan to reshape planting beds. Fumigation gas knives can be used (with a press pan which re-forms the bed to prevent dissipation). An irrigation drip tape layer can be added to lay drip tape on the bed surface just under the plastic or at a set depth within the planting bed. These attachments are described later in this section of the catalog. PS195 1 bed high-speed plastic layer, 5 ft (1.5 m) row centers, 54 in (137 cm) wide mulch or narrower PS200 1 bed high-speed plastic layer, 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers, 72 in (183 cm) wide mulch or narrower PS201 1 bed high-speed plastic layer, 7 ft (2.1 m) row centers, 84 in (213 cm) wide mulch or narrower PS196 1 bed high-speed plastic layer, custom row centers, 96 in (244 cm) wide mulch or narrower Weights and dimensions, are available by contacting our sales department. Category II hitches are standard. When ordering a high speed machine, please specify plastic width, row centers, and dimensions of your planting bed. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. STABILIZATION COULTERS It is very important to make sure that your plastic mulch layer follows the tractor in a straight line. This is difficult in fields where you are riding the side slope of a hill. We provide stabilization coulters that mount to the side frame of a high speed mulch layer. They consist of a mounting bracket and a straight disk. Once the disk is set into the soil it makes it difficult for the machine to slide sideways. 20

Category ll hitches are standard. When ordering a high speed plastic layer, please specify plastic width, row centers, and dimensions of planting bed. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. Our high speed plastic mulch layers are available as multibed units. 3 bed units are popular with larger growers who need to lay plastic mulch quickly on large acreage. Imagine moving through your field covering 3 planting beds at once and laying drip irrigation tape into each bed at the same time. You can do it with our multiple bed units. We recommend that multi-bed equipment be used as a set. It is much easier to run a 3 bed mulch layer when it follows a matching 3 bed superbedder rather than a single-bed superbedder. The row center spacing will match perfectly between the two 3 bed implements. This minimizes damage to the beds and the amount of reshaping required from the layer s press pan or boats. When considering the use of a multiple bed unit, it is important to remember that they are fabricated on a rigid frame. A properly prepared flat and level field will help ensure troublefree bedding and plastic laying. Multiple bed units are available in a variety of custom configurations, from 2 to 4 beds. The row centers must fit around the tractor tires, so layers with even numbers of beds must be built offset or the row centers must be narrow enough that your tractor can straddle two rows. 21

Plastic Mulch Layers - Specialty PAN TYPE PLASTIC MULCH LAYER This was the original Kennco plastic mulch layer. It is the perfect mulch layer for growers who lay plastic in fields that have a lot of hills and valleys. It rides close to the back of the tractor and stays tight against the soil surface regardless of terrain. The stretching wheels and closing disks float up and down for this purpose. Our pan type mulch layer carries a single roll of plastic mulch that rides freely on its rollers. The standard machine uses a flat roller that rides above the bed surface, rather than a crown roller which touches the bed. (Crown rollers are available as an option.) The pan type mulch layer is adjustable to various plastic mulch widths and can work with our drip irrigation tape attachment and fumigation knives. 23 Plastic Mulch Layers - Options IRRIGATION DRIP TAPE LAYER The system is available with a double reel stand to hold a second roll of tape. A subsoil shank is available to place the drip tape at a depth below the surface of the bed. See page 15 for details Mounting Bracket Funnel A variety of different ground tubes are also available. Round ground tubes are most often used because they allow the drip tape to pass freely with minimal clogging or restrictions. Flat ground tubes are used when growers have a difficult time getting the drip tape to lay flat on the bed Dual Drip Layer with Auto Brake Single Drip Layer with Auto Brake Ground Tube Mounting Bracket Ground Tube The most popular attachment for plastic mulch layers is an irrigation drip tape layer. It includes a stand to hold one or two reels of drip tape on the machine and a ground feed tube which lays the drip tape on the surface of the bed under the plastic mulch. The ground tube is made of stainless steel and includes a heat-treated wear guard for longer life. The mounting brackets for the reel stand and ground tube allow sideways adjustment so the irrigation tape can be located exactly where desired on the planting bed Standard ground tube - round with wear guard Standard ground tube - flat inch diameter ground tube - round with wear guard Irrigation drip tape layer mounting bracket - for high speed plastic mulch layer Irrigation drip tape layer mounting bracket - for superbedder Irrigation drip tape layer mounting bracket - for pan type plastic mulch layer Standard ground tube mounting bracket - for high speed plastic mulch layer Standard ground tube mounting bracket - for superbedder Standard ground tube mounting bracket - for pan type plastic mulch layer inch ground tube mounting bracket - for high speed plastic mulch layer Irrigation reel side plate - outer Irrigation reel side plate - inner Wingnut for reel Standard funnel inch funnel Brake pad When ordering a drip irrigation tape system, it is important to provide the following information to our sales department: What will you be mounting the system on (provide tool bar or frame size and dimensions)? Will you be laying the drip tape on the bed surface or at a depth below, and at what depth? 23

PRESS PAN Plastic Mulch Layers - Options If you are going to use your mulch layer to apply a fumigant, then you must have a way to seal the slit created by the gas knives. The gas knives will tear up the planting bed as they pass through it, and the damage they create must be repaired. A press pan can be added to your mulch layer for this purpose. Press pans for mulch layers are different from those described earlier in the catalog for bed shapers. They are mounted differently and include soil kick-outs that dig the cup (trench) where the edge of the mulch will be buried. It is critical that the press pan on the plastic mulch layer match the size of the press pan on the bed shaper that formed the bed. If it is too small, it will push soil in front of the bed. Press pans are only optional for high speed mulch layers. Pan-type layers come with a press pan as part of their design. It is important to specify the exact width and height of your planting bed when ordering a press pan for a mulch layer. See page 9 for more information on press pans. Press Pan Gas Knives BP99X9 Unlined press pan, customer specified width and height up to 42 in w x 8 in h (106 x 20 cm) BP99X8 Unlined press pan, customer specified width and height up to 54 in w x 8 in h (137 x 20 cm) BP99X7 Unlined press pan, customer specified width and height up to 66 in w x 8 in h (167 x 20 cm) Press pans are sold separately from plastic mulch layers. Press pans which form beds taller than 8 in (20cm) are available, but require selection of the next larger size pan Part #. For example, a 40 in wide bed that is 10 in high would require a BP99X8 press pan. 25 Plastic Mulch Layers - Options FUMIGATION GAS KNIVES We manufacture several different kinds of gas knives for fumigation with our plastic mulch machines. Our standard gas knives (part numbers 55081, 55083, and 55084) can mount on the 4 in (10 cm) square frame used on our high speed machines. It is often desirable to apply a fumigant to the planting bed with your plastic mulch layer. The plastic mulch covers the bed immediately after application and prevents dissipation of the gas into the atmosphere. Our preferred gas knives for use with mulch layers are the pan mounted (part numbers and 55082) gas knives. These gas knives have a narrower profile that causes less damage to the bed as they pass through it. They bolt directly to the inside top surface of the press pan. (Kennco does not advise using gas knives with its mulch layers without a press pan to re-press the bed, sealing the fumigant into the bed.) See page 12 for more information on gas knives. BURYING CUP DISKS When laying plastic mulch on flat ground or on the top surface of a bed (instead of down its sides), disk blades are sometimes used in place of our standard boats. The disk is mounted on an adjustable shank to dig as deep and wide a burying cup as necessary. We use a 12 in concave disk for this purpose in grooving disk Mounting shank Hub assembly 55649NPN Mounting bracket TUNNEL APPLICATOR Our single row high speed mulch layers can be used to apply tunnels over planting beds. Using interchangeable machine components, they can be raised to pass over the hoops used to support the plastic tunnel. The machine stretches the tunnel plastic over the hoops and buries the edges just as it would standard mulch on a bed. The same high speed mulch layer can be used for both jobs with the addition of the optional parts listed below. SPECIAL ORDER ONLY. 26 Bedder/Mulch Layers - Combination Units COMBINATION UNITS - GENERAL INFORMATION Combination machines pull and shape a raised planting bed and cover it with plastic mulch at the same time. This is a very attractive feature to many growers who are interested in minimizing the number of times they pass through the field with a tractor. When deciding whether to use a combination machine or a separate superbedder and plastic mulch layer, consider the following: Do you have a large enough tractor to pull the equipment? Combination machines are heavier than superbedders and/or mulch layers. You may not be able to pull a combination machine with the same tractor that pulls a superbedder or mulch layer. Are you able to consistently form a fully-filled and solid high quality planting bed? Because the combination machines cover the bed as it is shaped, it is difficult to visually inspect bed quality. You may not know if there are valleys or breaks in the bed that can create problems for the crop later. Combination machines are usually longer and larger than individual superbedders and mulch layers. This means that they are less suitable for fields with undulating terrain. With a skilled operator and good field conditions, combination machines can be a tremendous tool for the grower to keep production costs low. MINI-COMBO SUPERBEDDER Our mini-combo machine is very popular among our customers. Utilizing sweeps and press pan similar to a superbedder, but on a smaller frame, it produces a quality planting bed equal to our superbedders. The back half of the machine consists of a floating high speed mulch layer. A mini-combo machine accepts the following attachments: A drip irrigation attachment that will hold a single or double reel stand. It is best used to lay a single line of drip tape. (See page 23.) Fumigation gas knives can be mounted on a mini-combo, but space is limited. It can be difficult to mount both fumigation knives and drip irrigation tape, depending upon your location requirements. A mini-combo is a good machine for fumigating your beds because it includes a press pan to reseal the fumigation slits. Bedding disks can be used with a mini-combo machine, but space limitations may prevent the use of other attachments at the same time. (See page 14.) BP470 Mini-combo on 5 ft (152 cm) row centers, without press pan or accessories. BP471 Mini-combo on 6 ft (183 cm) row centers, without press pan or accessories. A three-point Category II hitch is standard. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions and for recommendations on accessories. Custom row centers are available. Crowned trailing rollers do not fit on mini-combos, straight rollers are used. 26

Transplanters TRANSPLANTERS - GENERAL INFORMATION We manufacture a variety of transplanters which are very simple and reliable. Although they are most commonly used to set plants through plastic mulch, they can also be used on uncovered planting beds or bare, flat ground. Our design is very simple and versatile. A floating punch wheel rolls along the surface of the planting bed. The only pressure on the bed is from the weight of the punch wheel. Pivoting on a single hinge at the front of the machine, the punch wheel rises and drops with the terrain. The wheel always maintains contact with the planting bed until lifted by the tractor. Two types of punch wheels are available. The first punches a dry hole. The second punches a hole that is watered when it is formed. Most growers prefer the water wheel because it means the plant is set into a moist, watered hole for better survival. The wide variety of options that are available with Kennco transplanters make them a valuable tool for any produce grower using nursery plants in their production program. 1 BED TRANSPLANTER three rows of plants per planting bed. Extra tray racks can be added to carry additional trays, and to stack empty trays so they aren't left lying in the field. Additional seats can be added so that more workers can ride the equipment to increase the planting rate. Horizontally floating wheel frames are available to ensure perfect alignment on the planting bed. All of these options are described later in this section of the catalog. In its standard form, a single row transplanter is supplied with two seats for workers and a wheel frame that accommodates a single punch wheel. The seat frames include a tray stand for the tray being used and additional tray racks for extra trays. Single row transplanters are available with a 200 gallon (758 L) poly tank to carry a water supply or any other type of fertilizer mixture. HOLE PUNCHERS PS439 There are many production methods that do not call for transplanting at the exact moment that the hole is punched through the mulch. For those growers who simply need to punch holes through plastic mulch, we make two different styles of hole punchers. Our PS439 hole puncher is a simple three-point mast that accepts a floating wheel frame. The side wheels keep the puncher centered over the planting bed and allow the punch wheels to ride over the top of the bed. This hole puncher can be used with 1, 2 or 3 punch wheels. of holes. The punch wheels are mounted inside a suspended frame that allows them to float on top of the bed and side to side when necessary. Any number of punch wheels can be mounted inside the wheel frame depending on the planting bed row center spacing and punch sizes. 30 Transplanters - Wheels and Wheel Frames TRANSPLANTER PUNCH WHEELS A Style PS800 Dry Wheel PS900 Water Wheel C Style B Style Stake Punch Transplanter punch wheels punch through plastic mulch and make holes suitable for the type of nursery plants that you are transplanting. Some wheels also water and fertilize the hole to reduce stress caused during planting. A Style Punch Styles Our A style punch is used on dry punch wheels. It punches through plastic mulch and makes a diamond shaped receiving hole. This punch is popular for setting bare root transplants. Our B style punch is ideal when pulling transplants from pots. It punches through plastic mulch and removes a round plug from the soil. The punch is tapered so that the soil packed into it drops out as the wheel rolls. An angled slide under each punch directs the soil out of the wheel. Our C punch is the preferred punch for nursery tray plants. It makes a square hole at the surface shaped like an upside-down pyramid in the bed. It does not remove soil. It can be used on wet or dry wheels. When used on a water wheel, its design allows water to enter the receiving hole. Shapes of Punched Holes - Top, Front, and Side Views Top B Style Top C Style Top Specifying Your Punch Wheel 1. How many rows of plants will be on your planting bed? If you have more than one row of plants per bed, you need the same number of wheels per bed on your transplanter. If you have more than one row, what is the spacing between the rows of plants? 2. What is the distance between plants within the row? We do not recommend planting closer than 4 in (10 cm). If your punch spacing is too close, the plastic may rip along the line of punches. In addition, if your punches are too close together, the punches may ride on top of the planting bed instead of punching into the soil. Due to wheel slippage, soil moisture, soil conditions, and various other factors, we cannot guarantee plant spacing to an exact dimension. You can normally expect the actual plant spacing to be within 1 inch (2.5 cm) of the dimension requested. The distance from punch tip to punch tip with a flexible tape is very close to your hole spacing in most soils. 3. Which style punch and what size? The punch needs to be large enough to allow the plant to fit into it, but not so large that it can't be packed firmly into the hole. Confirm the cell size on your planting trays or pots, and then size your punch. As a rule of thumb, size the punch width ½ in (1.3 cm) larger than the width of the cell, and the depth 1 in (2.5 cm) deeper. For example, if the cell size is 1½ in (3.8 cm) wide by 3 in (7.6 cm) deep, then a punch that is 2 in (5 cm) wide and 4 in (10 cm) deep will work. The sides of the receiving hole will collapse to some degree after being shaped. Over-sizing the punch ensures that the hole remains large enough for the transplant. Stake punches can be added to punch wheels. Call our sales department for help with wheel specifications. 31 Transplanters - Wheels and Wheel Frames TRANSPLANTER WHEEL FRAME Wheel frame styles on our transplanters are interchangeable in order to allow flexibility in wheel setup. The wheel frame is hinged to the front of the planter frame and can be replaced by simply pulling the pin and lifting the planter over the punch wheels. Depending on row spacing, we can normally fit no more than 3 punch wheels per bed into the planter frame. (Call our sales department if you need more than 3 wheels.) Horizontally floating wheel frames are Planter frame wheel frame useful additions to any planter, especially multiple row units. A floating wheel frame keeps the planting wheel centered on the planting bed so that the plants are set evenly down the row. They are perfect for multiple row transplanters used on beds that may not be spaced evenly. They allow the wheel frame to move sideways within the planter frame. If the transplanter drifts off center, the gauge wheels keep the punch wheel centered on the planting bed Transplanter wheel frame, standard, single Transplanter wheel frame, floating, single Transplanter wheel frame, standard, double Transplanter wheel frame, floating, double in punch wheel bearings Floating transplanter wheel frame hinge pin Gauge wheel axle Mounting clamp for gauge wheel arm Floating wheel frame gauge wheel TRANSPLANTER EXTRA TRAY RACKS Extra plant tray rack Empty tray receiver rack Additional plant tray racks are frequently added to our transplanters. They allow the transplanter to carry many extra plant trays in the field. This minimizes the number of trips to reload. Trays full of seedlings are within easy reach of the workers riding the transplanter, who simply pull them from a gravity-fed rack. Empty tray receiver racks are also available to carry the empty trays, rather then dropping them in the field. (Make sure to specify your tray size when ordering plant tray racks and receiver racks.) Extra plant tray rack Empty tray receiver rack BL2220 Planter Tray Rack TRANSPLANTER DOUBLE SEAT FRAME The limiting factor on the productivity of a transplanter is the rate at which workers can set plants in a bed. One way to increase production is to add more workers setting plants. Our double seat frame allows two workers to set plants in a bed from the same side. Using two double seat frames, four workers can set plants in a single bed Double seat frame kit (set of 2) Planter seat 31

Sprayers SPRAYERS - GENERAL INFORMATION One of the most important implements used in vegetable production is a sprayer. At Kennco, we make the most rugged, durable, and reliable sprayer available. Here's why: All of our frames and chassis are fabricated using oversized steel to make them very heavy duty. Whether on a three-point hitch frame or a towed chassis, we galvanize the sprayer instead of painting it. Galvanizing protects the frame much better from chemical corrosion and the harsh environment in which sprayers are used. We use fiberglass tanks on our sprayers instead of poly tanks. Fiberglass does not allow sunlight to enter the tank, minimizing the growth of algae that can clog nozzles and other components. Fiberglass tanks can be repaired and generally last longer than poly tanks. Because we use fiberglass tanks, we can install mechanical agitation on our sprayers. We install mechanical agitation on our sprayers because we believe it is a better way to agitate a tank, particularly a large tank. If you rely on your pump to agitate your sprayer tank, then you are taking flow away from your spray nozzles for agitation. That means that you need a higher flow pump to spray and agitate at the same time. The standard plumbing system on our sprayers consists of galvanized or stainless steel pipe and high-pressure 800 psi (55 bar) hose. We install Comet diaphragm pumps on our sprayers. We have found that Comet pumps provide the high pressure and flow requirements our produce customers desire, and they have proven to be reliable and trustworthy. Other pumps are available upon request and need. Our sprayers are available with various control methods. They can be controlled manually, electrically, or electronically. Due to the required accuracy and increasing costs of today's pesticide applications, we strongly encourage customers to consider our electric and electronic controls on their sprayers. We include catwalks on one side of our towed sprayers to make tank mixing easy and safe. We include a quickcoupled snorkel fill line for refilling the tank, and offer a pre-mix option that allows tank mixing without climbing to the top of the sprayer. We offer a variety of customized boom and gantry options. They can be folded manually or hydraulically, raised and lowered manually or hydraulically, or tilted and lifted manually or hydraulically. Our booms are custom built to match raised bed row centers with spray drops for directed spray applications, or they can be set up for broadcast applications. 32

Sprayers - Chassis and Tanks SPRAYER CHASSIS AND TANK OPTIONS The place to start specifying a Kennco sprayer is the chassis and tanks. We offer a variety of different sizes, from a 200 gallon (758 L) three-point hitch sprayer to a 1500 gallon (5,685 L) towed sprayer is our most popular size. Standard features include: Frames and chassis are galvanized and have oversized axles. Single axles are standard. Dual-wheel walking beam axles are available as an option. Includes a catwalk on one side for easy, safe access to the top of the tank. (Additional catwalks are available.) Quick-coupled siphon fill for tank filling is standard. Towed sprayers have flotation tires on 6 ft (1.8 m) row centers. Tires are 15 in (38 cm) wide, and give our sprayers an 18 in (46 cm) clearance height. In some production systems, our standard flotation tires are too wide to pass between planting beds freely. We offer a narrow profile tire option for this purpose. The narrow tire raises the sprayer for a clearance of about 24 in (60 cm) and leaves a footprint in the soil about 10 in (25 cm) wide. Towed sprayers include a 9,000 lb capacity jack stand. Tanks are of fiberglass construction. (Poly tanks are available upon request.) Mechanical agitation using a stainless steel shaft and paddles is standard in our tanks. Additional agitation is provided by an eductor nozzle installed onto the bypass line which recirculates flow to the tank. See page 39 for more information on agitation. They do not include sprayer plumbing, booms or additional options. PRE-MIX TANK A pre-mix tank can be added to any sprayer to provide workers with a safer way to mix chemicals. Instead of climbing to the top of the sprayer, the pesticide is mixed in a smaller tank at ground level, then siphoned into the main sprayer tank. This system helps begin agitation and mixing in a system designed to do so instead of just dumping chemicals into the tank. The system can be ordered with any new sprayer or added to an existing sprayer. SM441 Pre-mix tank assembly - Hypro Pre-mix tank for customer installation 33

Sprayers - Gantry and Boom Styles SPRAYER GANTRIES AND BOOMS - GENERAL INFORMATION We have many different options for gantries and spray booms with our sprayers. Our gantries can be mounted to the front or the rear of our sprayers. Most are mounted to the front so that the booms fold to the rear of the sprayers and do not interfere with the tractor during turning. Front mounted booms also give the tractor driver better visibility of the boom position and spraying application. All of our spray booms are designed to spray over the top of fruits and vegetables. They are designed for high clearance, and are available in a variety of lengths to spray a variety of different row spacings. ORDERING CONSIDERATIONS E F When ordering a sprayer, it is very important to tell our sales department the exact boom dimensions you require. Our standard booms are built to spray 3 planting beds on each side of the sprayer spaced on 6 ft (1.83 m) row centers [E]. The wings, or side boom sections, are about 18 ft (5.5 m) long. End to end, the spray boom is about 44 ft (13.5 m) long. The following information must be provided to our sales department when specifying your spray boom dimensions to guarantee your spray boom is fabricated to fit your requirements. The distance from the center line of the sprayer to the center line of your first planting bed [F]. The center-to-center row spacing between your planting beds [E]. How many planting beds you want to spray on each side of your sprayer. Whether you are driving the sprayer in a drive row where no planting bed exists or straddling a planting bed that requires center spraying. Whether you want to have your gantry mounted on the front of the sprayer, so that it folds to the rear, or on the rear folding to the front. Front mounting is most common. 35 Sprayers - Gantry and Boom Styles GANTRY AND LIFT-UP BOOMS Lift-up booms are our most basic spray boom option. Lift-up booms are rigidly mounted to the gantry so that the boom is set at a height of about 5 ft (1.5 m) above the soil surface. The booms are folded and unfolded manually and fixed into place during spraying. For turning, the booms are hydraulically tilted up to an angle of about 45 from the gantry. While lifted, the booms will clear fence posts, brush and other obstacles within and near the edges of fields. Make sure there is plenty of overhead clearance when using lift-up booms to avoid contact with power lines and other overhead objects. GANTRY AND SUSPENDED BOOMS Suspended booms give you the option of raising and lowering the spray boom. The height of suspended booms can be either fixed as with lift up booms or adjustable either manually or hydraulically. All suspended booms are folded hydraulically and supported with heavy-duty chain. As they are folded to the side of the sprayer, the booms lift to an angle of about 15. When adjusted manually, the boom can be adjusted between a height of 5 ft (1.5 m) and 2 ft (0.6 m) in 9 in (22.5 cm) increments. SELF-LEVELING GANTRY AND SUSPENDED BOOMS Self-Leveling booms are designed to keep the spray boom level. Similar to our suspended booms, a self-leveling gantry is hinged at the center and floats freely on this hinge. If one wheel of the sprayer drops into a ditch or depression in the field, the boom remains level based upon gravity. A hydraulic lock is included to lock the boom into place if desired to do so during spraying or transportation. Self-leveling booms are not recommended for fields that are hilly. They are designed for fields where the sprayer runs through ditches and water-furrows. 35

Sprayers - Spray Drops, Nozzles & Tips Typical Herbicide Spray Hood Double Spray Drop Single Spray Drop Our standard booms are plumbed using stainless steel pipe to withstand higher spraying pressures and to resist corrosion. We weld ¼ inch and ½ inch threaded nozzle inlets to the wet boom per your requirements. Instructions on how to space your nozzle inlets are described on page 34. For a broadcast application, nozzle bodies and nozzles can be threaded directly into the welded inlets. For directed spraying application, we manufacture spray drops that thread directly into the nozzle inlet between planting rows. The nozzle inlet directly above the crop row is either plugged by the grower or includes a nozzle to spray the top of the plant. Our spray drops are constructed with stainless steel fittings and brass nozzle bodies. They flex at the wet boom connection because they are hung from high pressure hose with high pressure hydraulic fittings. They usually include nozzles in four positions spaced 8 (20 cm) apart vertically. They are available to spray one side or two sides. In their standard form, we install TeeJet disc-core nozzles to provide a fine spray atomization. Spray hoods are available to spray herbicides between planting beds in row middles. The spray hood mounts to the boom structure instead of the wet boom for strength. It connects to the wet boom by hose for the liquid supply. The hood is constructed of hanging rubber or cloth at the customer s request. Each hood is sized to match the customer s row middle dimensions. 37 Sprayers - Pumps and Agitation Because our sprayers are generally used in applications that require higher spraying pressures and higher volumes, we install large diaphragm pumps onto our sprayers. Our pumps are powered by the tractor's PTO. They include a manual regulating valve that is mounted on the pump for coarse pressure adjustment. This valve regulates flow to a bypass line to increase or decrease your spraying pressure. It is adjusted manually during sprayer setup. Its design allows additional flow to bypass when boom sections are shut off. Typical Comet pump installation Our sprayers are designed to operate best between spraying pressures of 150 psi to 400 psi (10-30 bar). The pumps will reach higher pressures, but spraying at consistently higher pressures will reduce the life of the pump. If you are interested in spraying at lower pressures, additional bypass lines should be installed onto the sprayer for this purpose. Alternately, you could discuss other pump choices with our sales department. We have found the Comet pumps we use on our sprayers to be extremely reliable. With appropriate maintenance, they continue to perform as required. When they need to be repaired, the parts are priced very reasonably and are readily available. Agitation drive mechanism (Guard removed for clarity) Agitation inside tank. Note black eductor nozzle at left. A stainless steel shaft and paddles are driven off the pump PTO shaft to agitate our tanks. The system is easy to maintain and very reliable. Two paddles are mounted within each baffled tank section. Additional baffles are available upon request. Comet Pump Features Positive displacement, diaphragm pressurization over oil bath metal piston with automotive type piston rings. Uniform flow rate and pressure, unlike high wear leather cup. Smooth rotary action, similar to aircraft radial engine. Pump can be maintained in field without removing it from the sprayer and requires a minimum number of tools to replace diaphragms. Lower cost than old style leather piston pumps. Pump is supplied with automatic oiler with visual inspection, surge damper, and pressure regulator. 38 Sprayers - Electric Valves and right boom sections independently. The kit does not include a pressure-regulating valve, but one can be added. Valve kits can be ordered with new sprayers, or purchased as retrofit kits and installed by the customer. SM The electric valves that we use on our sprayers are rated for a maximum spraying pressure of 800 psi (55 bar). This makes them suitable for the higher spraying pressures common in vegetable production. While manual on-off and pressure regulating valves are supplied as standard components on our sprayers, many of our customers use sprayers with electric valves. Electric on-off and pressure regulating valves are recommended options for sprayers because they provide greater levels of safety and convenience to the sprayer operator. In today's agricultural environment, electric valves are the best way to operate a sprayer. Electric valves are powered by the tractor's 12 volt power supply and are controlled with toggle switches in the cab of the tractor. There are no chemical lines running to the tractor, therefore there is no risk of chemical exposure to the operator or corrosion to the tractor if a line breaks or leaks. Because the operator can easily control the pressure and flow of the sprayer with toggle switches, he can make adjustments to the application on-the-fly and pay more attention to operating the tractor. Kennco's standard sprayers that are set up for directed applications to the left and right of the sprayer require our SM420 valve kit. This allows the operator to shut off the left Consult with our sales department for more information and specifications on our electric sprayer valves. 39 Sprayers - Electronic Control System Valves control individual booms Flow to boom Wheel speed sensor High Pressure Flowmeter Valve adjusts flow Sprayer Gantry Weatherproof connection box Control console mounts in tractor cab Cable connects tractor to sprayer An electronic rate control is an important addition to any sprayer. The rate control makes the sprayer a precision applicator, which is necessary in today's crop protection environment. We offer a rate control option on our sprayers that senses the ground speed of the sprayer and flow rate to the spray booms. It automatically regulates spraying pressure to ensure that the application rate remains constant. If the tractor driver speeds up or slows down, the rate control keeps your application rate constant. If the driver shuts off one side of the spray boom, the rate control keeps the application rate constant on the boom still spraying. Additional features: Manual mode of operation to give sprayer control to the tractor driver Visible warnings if application rate is not accurate Single cable connection between tractor and sprayer for quick hook up and disconnect Stainless steel high-pressure flow meter High-pressure electric valves for shut-off and pressure regulation Simulated operation mode for training, setup, and testing SM432 Complete control system installed by Kennco SM433 3rd valve option for center spraying. SM434 Control system installed on used sprayer Control console Junction box assembly Electric shut-off valve Electric regulating valve Flow meter Speed sensor Main cable Wheel Speed Sensor This is an important feature on any sprayer. Keeping the application rate constant minimizes instances of chemical over-application that waste chemicals or cause crop damage. It minimizes instances of under-application that can reduce the effectiveness of the chemical or require additional applications. The rate control we offer for our sprayers consists of a computer switch box that mounts inside the tractor cab, a magnetic speed sensor mounted near the sprayer wheel, a flow meter mounted on the sprayer, electric valves mounted on the sprayer, and a junction box for all component wiring. The rate control console itself is very simple to program and operate. During spraying operation it displays tractor speed, spraying pressure, actual GPA (L/Ha) application rate, gallons (liters) sprayed, and acres (hectares) sprayed. Call our sales department to discuss the benefits and features of our automatic rate control system. 40 Sprayers - Related Equipment SELF PROPELLED SPRAYER High clearance sprayers are used by many growers who do not use drive rows or trench irrigation in their production method. When producing tall growing crops, or using stake production, a high clearance sprayer is necessary to spray these crops. We custom build high clearance sprayer for our customers. If a customer can provide an older tractor, we will "lift" it to provide a clearance of 5 ft (1.5 m) and add a spray platform. By adding our standard spray booms and plumbing, we produce a self-propelled, high-clearance sprayer. By converting a piece of equipment that was, in most cases, not being used on the farm, the grower can pick up a new piece of equipment at a significantly lower price than if he were to purchase a new sprayer. Contact our sales department directly to discuss your interest in converting a tractor into a high clearance sprayer. NURSE TANK / NURSE TRUCK We have made a variety of nurse tanks and water wagons for our customers. Because our sprayers usually hold over 1,000 gallons (3,790 L), our nurse tanks are typically 3,600 gallons (13,644 L) to efficiently bring water to the field. Our fiberglass tanks have the strength necessary for a tank of this size, and fiberglass construction minimizes algae growth while the tank is holding water. We make them large and durable. Call our sales department to discuss size options. We can build your nurse truck on an existing truck chassis, or a new one. 40

PLASTIC BURNER Cleanup Tools - Mulch and String Burners Plastic mulch can be burned with our towed burning rig while it lies on the planting bed. Our SM400 burning rig is a chassis designed to carry a 500 gallon or 1000 gallon (1895 or 3790 L) propane tank, which is supplied by the customer. To the rear of the chassis is a boom that swings to one side of the equipment. This boom carries two million BTU burners on it. When set at the correct pressure, the burners will vaporize the plastic mulch. There is no lifting or removing mulch from the field with this piece of equipment. An additional benefit of our burning rig is that it burns string and dead vines from stakes. The heat from the burners cleans the stakes and leaves them free and undamaged so that you can follow with a stake puller and remove them from the field. To be successful with any type of burning rig, it is important to remember several factors. If the plastic mulch is wet and covered with a large volume of dead fruit or trash, you may find that you cannot burn 100% of the mulch. Many of our customers lift the mulch from several beds and collect it into one bed, allow it to dry, and then pass over it with a burner. Pay close attention to burning pressure and field conditions for best results. 43 Cleanup Tools - Stake Puller STAKE PULLER Stakes represent a large investment for any vegetable crop that uses them. It is important to minimize breakage and maximize the life of the stake. Our stake puller does exactly that. It uses a double chain conveyer that is timed to match the tractor speed. It grabs the stake and pulls it vertically from the soil without breaking it. Once it is pulled from the soil, it is transported and dropped into a hopper for bundling. After it is bundled, the hopper can deposit the bundle at the side of the field. Our stake puller will create 1,000 stake bundles and carries its own hydraulic reservoir to minimize reliance on the tractor s system. Customized row centers and stake sizes are available. You will find that a stake puller pays for itself in a single season with the speed it can pull stakes and reduced stake breakage. SP10160 Stake puller w/dump bin for up to 60 inch stakes SP10178 Stake puller w/dump bin for up to 78 inch stakes 43

Cleanup Tools - Bed Mower BED MOWER Our bed mower is the ideal tool to mow vegetation or weeds that have grown over the plastic after harvest, so you can easily remove plastic mulch, or plant a second crop. Rigid large diameter mowing drum sheds vines. Reversable blades double time between sharpening. Durable PTO powered gearbox drive. Adjustable gauge roller keeps blade height just right. Adjustable height support tires. PS600 Bed Mower IRRIGATION DRIP TAPE RETRIEVER Our drip tape retriever is used by growers to pull and remove irrigation tape from the field for disposal or reuse. It includes a platform for a worker who supervises and guides the rolling of the tape and reloads the reels. It is powered by the tractor s hydraulic system and includes a flow regulator to speed up or slow down the reel speed. Attached to the three-point hitch of a tractor, the retriever is moved from one bed to the next at the edge of the field. The operator attaches each line of tape to the reel and then supervises its collection. PS612 Irrigation drip tape retriever Our standard irrigation drip tape retriever fits a standard three-point Category II hitch. Customization is always available. 44

Cleanup Tools PLASTIC MULCH LIFTER PS611 A plastic mulch lifter is used to remove mulch from the field. The side coulters align with the edge of the buried mulch and slice the weeds and other trash that hold the mulch in the soil. Properly adjusted, with a short top link on the three-point hitch, the plow points lift the mulch from the soil and shake the soil and weeds off of it. The lifter leaves the mulch lying loosely on top of the planting bed, making it easier to pick up for disposal. A center coulter is available to slice the mulch into two pieces. All coulters and plow points are adjustable to accommodate any size planting bed. Also available is a mulch lifter with propane burners. It uses 2,000,000 BTU burners to vaporize the mulch as it is lifted from the soil. This is an excellent way to dispose of the mulch in the field. Our mulch lifters are also available as multiple row units. PS610 PS608 PS608 1 bed plastic mulch lifter PS607 2 bed plastic mulch lifter PS609 3 bed plastic mulch lifter PS611 1 bed plastic mulch lifter with burners PS610 Center coulter option Customer must supply propane tank. Our standard plastic lifters fit a standard three-point Category II hitch. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. Customization for your specific needs is always available by contacting our sales department. 45

Cleanup Tools - Plastic Mulch Retrievers ONE ROW & TWO ROW PLASTIC MULCH RETRIEVERS Our plastic mulch retrievers allow you to lift, roll, and dump your plastic mulch and drip tape in one pass with only two workers. Side coulters are aligned with the edge of the buried mulch and slice the weeds and other trash that hold the mulch in the soil. The plow points loosen the mulch from the soil. Hydraulically driven cones roll up the plastic and shed trash. The cones separate to drop the rolled plastic where you want it. A center coulter is available to slice the mulch into two pieces. All coulters and plow points are adjustable to accommodate any size planting bed. Stainless steel cones are durable and prevent plastic from sticking. Holds up to 6000 linear feet of plastic mulch for faster removal. Drops plastic at end of row, or where needed, in a compact easy to remove roll. Adjustable plow points and coulters to work in almost any environment Precision hydraulic control of drum speed. PS613 Dropping Roll of Plastic Our two row plastic mulch retriever is designed to work on beds with row centers up to 50. It allows you to lift, roll, and dump two rows of plastic mulch and drip tape in one pass with only two workers. Can hold up to 12,000 linear feet (in two rolls) of plastic mulch for faster removal. Can also be used as a one row retriever for wider row centers. 47 Specialty Equipment STAKE CART AND STAKE DRIVER CART PS300 PS325 Stake carts are useful for growers who specialize in tomatoes or other crops that require stakes. A stake cart attaches to a tractor and is loaded with tomato stakes. The cart extends to the side of the tractor over three planting beds so that workers have the stakes within easy reach for the bed where they are working. PS300 Stake cart 28 ft PS325 Stake driver cart 36 ft Stake carts are towed by a tractor s drawbar. Call our sales department for weights, dimensions, and customization. Stake drivers are a tremendous labor-saving tool. Using an industrial air compressor and air-hammers, workers can drive stakes into soil mechanically. Using our stake driver allows your workers to set stakes much more quickly than driving them by hand. A stake driver cart carries an air compressor (usually rented from a local industrial supply house). It includes booms that swing to the side and carry air lines to the air hammers. The hammers are suspended over the top of each planting bed, typically three to each side, for use by your workers. The stake driver cart can be built to carry stakes or follow a stake cart on a separate tractor. THREE-POINT HITCH MOUNTED LIFT BOOM Our lift boom is a simple tool that every farmer should have. It hooks to the three-point hitch of your tractor and is an economical means of lifting equipment up to 2500 pounds. If you can't afford a forklift, and don't have a tractor with a bucket loader, this is a handy tool. PS360 Three-point hitch mounted lift boom Our standard lift boom fits a standard three-point Category II hitch. Call our sales department for weights and dimensions. Customization is always available by contacting our sales department to express your specific needs and wishes. FIELD HARVESTING CONVEYOR A produce conveyor is a popular item among our customers that harvest crops such as lettuce or cabbage. The unit unfolds in the field and is pulled by a tractor s three-point hitch. Workers follow the conveyor and load it with the produce that they have harvested. Powered by the tractor s hydraulic system, the belt moves the produce across the conveyor to a second conveyor which lifts the produce to a truck or wagon moving beside it through the field. The conveyor can be folded for transport between fields and includes lighting for night or early morning operation. 47

Specialty Equipment - Frost-Off Foam Applicators FROST-OFF Our Frost-Off Insulating Foam System is engineered to quickly produce large amounts of non-toxic insulating foam to cover your plants. Insulating foam works for short-term cold protection. It won t protect your tender plants for weeks at a time, but it is very effective against quick frosts or freezes in late fall or early spring. It protects the plant from direct contact with the cold air, and retains ground heat that would otherwise be lost. No additional heat or irrigation is required to protect the plants. The foam is stable at cold temperatures, but breaks down rapidly when it warms up, so no labor is required for removal. Testing on live plants at the University of Florida research station under the guidance of the USDA has shown that insulating foam is much more effective at protecting plants than shade cloth, almost completely eliminating cold damage to plants during a 24 F night. Our 35 and 100 gallon applicators are designed for nursery and landscape use. The 600 gallon unit is for vegetable fields. FM Gallon Single Applicator FM Gallon Dual Applicator FM0035 Towed Nursery Kit 35 gallon, 1 Blower FM0100 Skid Mount Nursery Kit 100 gallon, 2 Blowers FM0601 Field Foam Machine 600 Gallon capacity FM1000 Backpack Blower Assembly Foam applicators require foam making chemicals, not provided by Kennco. 49 Specialty Equipment - Agmaster Citrus Loader In addition to our vegetable production equipment, we also manufacture loaders for harvesting citrus. If you know our reputation in vegetable production, then you will be pleased with the durability and quality of our Agmaster citrus loader. What makes our loader different from other brands on the market is that the motor that rotates our lift boom is located outside the support tower. We use a heavy duty gear and bearing instead of a rotary actuator. This makes our product much easier to service and repair when necessary. Features include: Interchangeable heads for square fresh market bins and round (10 box) processing tubs 12 foot (3.6 m) reach from the lift boom Lift boom has a load bearing capacity of 8,300 lbs at 12 feet, and a hydraulic lifting capacity of 1800 lbs at 12 feet Boom rotates a full 360 with a stop at front of truck hood Hydraulic boom rotation motor can be removed or adjusted without having to disassemble the boom and tower Hi-Lift box has 90 box capacity; larger options are available Box sides can be lifted from the truck to provide a flat bed for hauling fresh fruit bins Position of the control valve bank is adjustable for operator convenience Includes a safety stand for working under raised box Includes safety features such as mirrors and beepers for backing in the grove Industry standard components for parts replacement from any industrial supply house We also modify or refurbish existing citrus loaders. If the chassis of your loader wears out, or the engine no longer runs, we can strip and prepare a new chassis and move the existing lift boom and box to the new chassis. If you have a good chassis but need a loader, we can install a new lift boom and box on that chassis. In addition to our standard product, we also customize our loaders to meet the needs of customers who harvest citrus mechanically. We produce different sized lift boxes to carry more citrus and follow a mechanical harvester. Contact our sales department to discuss your special requirements. 52 ADVANTAGES OF USING PLASTIC MULCHES AND DRIP IRRIGATION FOR VEGETABLE PRODUCTION 1. Increased soil temperature: At a 2 inch depth; typically 4º to 5º F under black mulch or 8º to 10º F under clear mulch. 2. Reduced soil compaction: Soil under plastic mulch remains loose, friable and well-aerated. Roots have access to adequate oxygen and microbial activity is excellent. 3. Reduced fertilizer leaching: Water runs off the impervious mulch resulting in maximum utilization of the fertilizer. 4. Reduced drowning of crops: Water is shed from the row area and excess water runs off the field thus reducing drowning and other excess soil water stresses. 5. Reduced evaporation: Soil water does not escape from under plastic mulch. Plant growth on mulch is often at least twice that on bare soil. The resulting larger plants will require more water, so mulching is NOT a substitute for irrigation. 6. Cleaner product: A mulched crop is cleaner and less subject to rot due to elimination of soil splashing on the plants or fruits. Note: Beds should be firm and tapered away from the row center. Plastic should be tight to promote runoff. There should be no puddles on the mulched beds! 7. Root pruning eliminated: Cultivation is not necessary except for the area between the mulched strips. Therefore, roots are not pruned. 8. Reduced weed problems: Black plastic mulch provides good weed control in the row. Clear plastic will require use of a herbicide or fumigation. Weeds between mulch strips can often be controlled by a herbicide. 9. Earlier crops: Black plastic mulch can result in 2 to 14 days earlier harvest while clear plastic can result in a 21 day earlier harvest. 10. Increased growth: Plastic mulch is practically impervious to carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), a gas that is of prime importance in photosynthesis. Very high levels of CO 2 build up under the plastic, because the film does not allow it to escape. CO 2 has to come through the holes made in the plastic for the plants and a "chimney effect" is created, resulting in localized concentrations of abundant CO 2 for the actively growing leaves.
