5 Water Week 2015 has been significant for sustainable development and climate change tember 2015 world leaders agreed 17 SDGs, establishing a set of 169 targets to end lity and injustice and tackle climate change by In December, 196 countries agreed Weather related disaster account for 80% of global disasters (UNISDR Report to COP21) ng to 2 o C with an aspiration for 1.5 o C, something the Guardian referred to as the world s uccess. Number of severity expected to increase with a warming climate nt too for Africa. January 2015 saw devastating floods in Madagascar, Malawi and infall in the southern African region for the wet season led Governments to rought in decades. Crop failures across the continent have deepened food insecurity. to import grain against increasing prices, falling currency values, and low forex reserves. ent countries are experiencing significant energy shortages as storage levels drop, g the impact of low global commodity rowth. Low income countries loss of infrastructure due to disasters make up a greater proportion of GDP to COP 21 noted that weather related or over 80% of global disasters. The of these disasters is expected to increase ate. In low income countries the loss of disaster makes up a higher proportion of 4 of the SDG targets refer to disaster risk links between climate and disaster ture and sustainable growth has been ont of the global development agenda. Links between climate and disaster resilience, infrastructure and sustainable growth has been pushed to the forefront of the global development agenda Climate and Development Knowledge Network 5

6 Climate and Development Knowledge Network 6

7 The last year has shown that climate resilience is: as much about the delivery of small infrastructure to help the poor cope with weather related disaster as it is about; delivering larger scale climate proofed water, energy and transport infrastructure to enable sustainable development. Viewed from a different perspective: Climate change provides African governments with an added incentive to put in place policies and practises that are long overdue. To demonstrate leadership on the international stage. Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda have already developed climate-resilient strategies to reduce poverty, raise productivity and cut emissions.
