WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE DOING HERE IN BONN? & WHY ARE THEY NEEDED 10
WhyisUNBonnimportant? A word on MEGAtrends/1 Growth in worlds population UN forecast: 9.5 bil.. people on the planet until 2050 (2.5 bil. more than today) 90% of 2.5 bil. People will be born developing countries (in regions with water scarcity ) Currently already 1.2 bil. people (1/5 of worlds population ) are living in areas with water scarcity 70 % of fresh water is used for agricultural production Until 2030 the demand for food will increase by 50 % water will increase by 30 % energy will increase by 45% of Already now two thirds of the services provided by nature to humankind are in decline E.g. each year 12 Mio hectares of cultivatable land in so called semi arid areas are lost due to land degradation Each year the possibility to produce about 20 million tons of grain are lost 11
MEGAtrends in figures! /2 Global community is losing up to 5 % of global agricultural gross domestic production (GDP) The creation of 10 cm cultivable land needs roughly 2000 years Climate change will exacerbate the scarcity of resources. It has an influence on food, water and energy supply, on health, and on the national security of states. Greenhouse gases in our atmosphere have increased to levels unprecedented in the past 800,000 year The global CO2 concentration increased by 43% since 1750 Largest increase of CO2 between than in any decade in human history from 24,8 GtCO2 to 35,1GtCO
What do those figures mean? Human kind is currently living as if there are 3 or 4 planets Current development path destroys ecosystems we depend on. This also undermines the potential of human development. At the same time we see a growing population that also wants to develop. Problems are global, complicated and interdependent. No quick fixes, no easy solutions, no one can sort this alone. 13
UNBonn s contribution UNBonn is here to work on solutions to resolve some of the greatest problems of human kind. All capabilities need to be exploited to secure a decent survival on planet earth on the long term. The approach must be holistic, integrated and multilayered as well as multilateral. UNBonn in Bonn this is not only the UN is unique, since it is providing for all Coming from the different angles of 18 United Nations organizations we are all tackling climate protection and sustainable development. 14

What does this mean concretly... combat climate change, describe adaptation measures, but also deal with the damage that now seems inevitable (UNFCCC);... protect one billion people from land degradation and global environmental change (UNCCD, UNU-EHS, UNU-IHDP);... pursue disaster preparedness and to deliver quick, satellite based information in case of a disaster (UN/ISDR, UN-SPIDER);... bring about sustainable development also directly in places where it is needed the most. Annually (2012), about 7000 volunteers from 157 countries are being sent to 127 countries in order to achieve this (UNV).... save migratory wildlife species from extinction and protect ecosystems that are vital for human beings (UNEP/CMS, UNEP/AEWA, UNEP/ASCOBANS, UNEP/Eurobats, UNWTO);to suggesting options for action to the international community of states," 16
