2 Photo: digitalistmag.com Today, GrainPro s products are used in more than 110 countries worldwide. name became synonymous to solar drying, as well as safe and chemical-free storage for a wide range of dry agricultural commodities. impact and positive contributions are felt especially in developing countries where as much as 25 to 40 percent of staple food crops are lost due to infestation and fungal growth that comes with improper handling and management. GrainPro rebranded itself to reflect success and an ongoing growth in the food security sector. Today, it is also leading the way through innovative solar drying and transport solutions providing a wide array of products designed to protect food from farms to market to tables. We ve been working on a brand that captures our leading role in the industry, says Tommy Ng, Vice President for International Sales and Marketing at GrainPro. Its implementation is a step in the right direction as we continue to position our company as more than a product or service, but as an inspiration in the marketplace, in the industry and within the communities we live in. new logo the first in 10 years echoes a contemporary look, a feel that appeals to this generation s food producers. It evokes the radical evolution of the symbolic stem and leaves that used to stand out alone into what appears to be embraced and connected to the rest of the image. This signifies GrainPro s focus on sustainability, growth and in earning the lifetime loyalty and trust of customers. green tint mirrors its mission of developing solutions that are safe for both the consumers and the environment, while raising the quality of life of food producers and smallholder farmers, especially in developing parts of the world. new typeface lends an elegant, modern, and cleaner appearance. Tommy Ng, Vice President for International Sales and Marketing (GrainPro) Storing the Future will stay as GrainPro s tagline. Timeless and on-point, this reminds customers about the company s ultimate mission, suggesting an optimistic and brighter tomorrow - a future with no hunger through innovation. GrainPro s web presence, marketing collateral and official documents will begin to carry the new iconic brand. In fact, a team is currently working hard at redesigning the new GrainPro website making it more visually-appealing and allowing a more user-friendly experience, while carrying the new visual themes OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER 2
3 Photo: pixabay.com AFRICA SUCCESS IN MALAWI Farmers responded positively to the recently concluded P4P postharvest workshops in Malawi led by World Food Programme (WFP) according to an official field report by Alex Chigovera, Technical Support Engineer of GrainPro. report was collected from the post-training surveys that the participants completed. More than 70 percent of the 114 participants indicated that they gained important knowledge that would be very useful in reducing food deterioration during storage. Facilitation quality was evaluated with more than 75 percent of them giving it an excellent rating across the three locations. participants are expected to share this new knowledge to their respective communities. workshops were organized in partnership with GrainPro and Malawi-based, Chemicals and Marketing. 114 participants, 33 of which were women farmers, represented 54 farming groups from the regions of Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu. In Malawi, women smallholder farmers play an important role in food production. PARTNERS SPREAD HERMETIC TECHNOLOGY IN UGANDA More than 300 smallholder farmers from Uganda s Karamoja region are now using Ultra-Hermetic storage thanks to a joint venture led by Mercy Corps, a global humanitarian aid agency engaged in transitional environments, with funding from WFP Uganda. Families in Kotido and Kaboong Districts received the SuperGrainbag Farm (SGB Farm) from GrainPro and its Uganda distributor, Askar on May 11 to 13, partnership, WFP Safety Net and Resilience Program, aims to promote the adoption of new technologies to increase total yields. Since last year, the program had been providing more than 20,000 families with GrainPro solutions through a voucher system. farmers used the SGB Farm to safely preserve locally grown maize, millet, sorghum and groundnuts. SuperGrainbag Farm is an affordable Ultra-Hermetic solution that can stop infestation and inhibit fungal growth without using harmful chemicals. partners are working to step up its promotion in the next four years. Solar drying red chili peppers in Pakistan on a GrainPro Collapsible Dryer Case. IIFPT SUPPORTS HERMETIC STORAGE Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) strongly pushing the use of hermetic technology as a permanent solution against food losses in India. IIFPT studied multilayered bags, Cocoon storage and on-bulk grain silos. Improper storage and infestation are threats that cause postharvest losses in quantity and quality. In India, 12 to 16 million metric tons of foods produced are lost each year. Chemicals are used to fight off infestation. use of chemical pesticides, however, affects the environment and the health of consumers. Hermetic technology is very appealing among developing countries as a storage and preservation solution because it provides a sustainable and affordable alternative. GrainPro Cocoons and SuperGrainbags, for example, do not require the use of chemicals to stop infestation and inhibit the growth of aflatoxin producing molds. HERMETIC STORAGE TRIAL KICKS-OFF IN NEPAL GrainPro distributor in Nepal, Mero Agro, Pvt. Ltd., facilitated a hermetic storage trial of a GrainPro GrainSafe Bag-1.0 (GS Bag 1.0) on June 3, 2017 in Dhangadhi, Nepal. trial is part of a 10-year Prime Ministerial Agricultural Modernization Project that aims to improve the country s food security through the integration of modern postharvest solutions. Nepal s economy is dominated by agriculture with 90 percent of the population working in agriculture. With help from the Seed Science and Technology Division of the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC), Mero Agro collected more than 10 quintals of maize seeds from Unique Seed Company, Pvt. Ltd. goal is to maintain the high germination scores of the seeds until the next season. With a capacity of up to one ton, the GS Bag 1.0 is the perfect storage solution. Made from lightweight and durable materials, the GS Bag 1.0 can extend the shelf life of stored commodities for more than a year without using harmful chemicals. Because of its hermetic qualities, it can prevent the buildup of air and moisture, enabling it to stop infestation and inhibit the growth of aflatoxin-producing molds OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER 4
5 Photo: agriculturewire.com LATIN AMERICA PAKISTAN STEPS UP SUN DRYING USING HERMETIC STORAGE TO PRESERVE PADDY SEEDS IN PANAMA Fincas Azuero in Panama found a way to properly store paddy seeds and retain seed germination - thanks to GrainPro and its distributor Potuga. Five 100MT GrainPro Self-Verifying Cocoons (SVC) are preserving 82 tons (180,000 pounds) of certified paddy seeds at their facility in Panama. Research and field trials show that Cocoons can store seeds as well as conventional cold storage. patented SVC is an Ultra-Hermetic storage solution for the long-term storage of bagged seeds and other agricultural commodities. It can be installed outdoors or indoors and requires minimal cost to install and use. INDOOR STORAGE OF COFFEE DONE THE RIGHT WAY EVACUEES STORE WATER IN FLEXIBLE WATER TANK GrainPro Flexible Water Tank a collapsible, portable and food-grade liquid storage solution with a capacity of up to 1000 liters is helping evacuees store clean water in Peru as part of their local relief efforts. Fifty tanks were distributed to families in Piura and Santa Eulalia. families were affected by the massive March flash floods when the banks of the Piura River burst. Flexible Water Tank provides a solution for a reliable and efficient water collection and storage especially during times of calamity. Since the tank folds into a small package, it can easily reach disaster areas through emergency supply channels. Finca Oná now stores their bags of coffee the right way inside the GrainPro Cocoon Indoor (see photo). This simple storage solution successfully resolves the effects of moisture and condensation and stops insect infestation during indoor storage. It inhibits the growth of molds and preserves the quality, color and texture of their specialty green coffee without using chemical fumigants. TM STO R I N G T H E F U T U R E 5
