1 Cover Crop Considerations What is the best cover crop for nitrogen (N) fixation? The most effective weed suppressor? One that will increase water infiltration? Is there a cover crop that performs all of these functions, and how will it fit into my crop rotation? Selecting the best cover crop can seem like a daunting task: there are many species to choose from and many factors to consider. Ultimately, all cover crops are multifunctional, but there are trade-offs. Planting cover crop mixtures is one tactic for harnessing the strengths of multiple species (such as the N-fixation of a legume and the weed suppression of a grass), but these mixtures can introduce additional management considerations (e.g., timing cover crop termination when maturation is not synchronized). Fortunately, there are many great resources available online to help (see below). From a soil health perspective, cover crops are integral to maintaining and enhancing the health of agroecosystems. With the continued collaboration and support among growers, extension educators, crop consultants, and researchers, cover crops will grow as a viable solution to the many agricultural and environmental challenges we face today.
