8 Mission of CLA s S&S Efforts Work collaboratively with CLA members to: 1) help ensure the responsible and ethical management of crop protection products from discovery and development right through to distribution, use and recycling, as well as the final disposal of empty containers; and 2) help lead all significant discussions involving sustainability in agriculture where the use of pesticides is being debated, while also seeking to understand the concerns, motivations and intentions of all stakeholders to help identify opportunities where misperceptions can be corrected and knowledge gained in areas our members have expertise.

14 Crop Protection Product Industry Commitment to Recycling Formation of the Ag Container Recycling Council in 1992 Promotion and education of triple or pressure rinsing Support and funding of pesticide container collection and recycling into acceptable end uses. Safe handling & storage of full containers Efficient use of chemical Triple or pressure rinsing Environmentally responsible disposal Ø Recycling where available Did you know? More than 50,000,000 nonrefillable pesticide containers (<56 gallon), and more than 300,000 IBCs (minibulk containers) are produced each year!

15 Performance Results The crop protection industry has invested $80,000,000 since ,000,000 lbs. of pesticide containers have been recycled into nearly 100,000 miles of ag drain tile. The recycling of 175,000,000 lbs. of pesticide containers has resulted in: ü Savings of more than 875,000 cubic yards of landfill space (a football field filled 500 feet deep!) ü Reduction of 123,800 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent ü Energy savings equal to 39,375,000 gallons of gasoline ü The equivalent of 41,958 households annual energy consumption 15

17 What is the AASA? l l l l A non profit association that develops stewardship practices for the safe handling and storage of bulk, refillables and packaged crop protection products. Developed and maintains an inspection checklist based on federal requirements. Hires and trains third party inspectors that use the checklist to conduct inspections of ag retail facilities. Funded by manufacturers that purchase inspection reports to aid in their decision as to where products can be handled and stored safely and correctly (no cost to retailer).
