Investments: Case Studies Prof Paul Berryman, Agri-Tech Specialist, Agri-Tech Organisation, DIT 23 Presentation title - edit in the Master slide

Agri-Tech Investors 24 24

FDI Case Study 1: Syngenta Swiss Agrochemicals giant Syngenta established a new Global Operations Centre in Manchester creating 200 new jobs. This expanded Syngenta s activities in the UK, which is already home to the company s largest global research and development facility in Berkshire and two major production facilities in Yorkshire and Scotland. 25

FDI Case Study 2 : BASF 26 Nematodes BASF scientist German firm BASF expanded its Littlehampton facility as part of a multimillion Agri-Tech investment. This doubled production capacities for beneficial nematodes, which are microscopic organisms that can control a diverse range of insect and slug pests. 26

FDI Case Study 3 : Arlabion 27 After DIT helped Latvian business Arlabion to relocate into the UK, they introduced two new chemical compounds to the market seed treatment products for winter wheat, peppers and tomatoes. The compounds act as systemic plant activators and enhance plant immune system response against pathogen attack. Key targets are Fusarium and Septoria tritici on wheat. 27

R&D Case Study: Kaneka. 28 Japanese Corporation Kaneka signed a research collaboration agreement with the University of Sheffield to exploit a new type of fertiliser that speeds up photosynthesis and therefore crop yields. 28

Summary The Environmental Challenge: Population, climate, water, soil, crop yields, food waste.
