2 HARVEST SANITATION Harvest Field Sanition Harvest sanition is an imptant component a GAPs program. It includes both practices sanition equipment th is used in field. Wkers involved in field packing produce should be trained pick intact, undamaged fruits vegetables. They should not drops pieces produce obviously contamined with animal human feces. Harvest stards f your operions should be discussed during wker training. Dirty equipment can contamine fresh fruits vegetables, so it is very imptant implement sanition programs th effectively reduce this risk. Obviously it is impossible keep field soil f containers, but steps can be taken remove soil from containers pri arrival in packing house. It is also imptant clean sanitize containers on a routine schedule reduce risk transmitting human phogens as well as plant phogens newly ed fruits vegetables. Single-use containers used f field packing will not require a scheduled sanition program since y used only once, but se containers should be sted in a clean place where y will not be contamined with rodent, bird, or pest feces. Harvest such as knives aprons should also be cleaned on a regular basis special tention should be given gloves wn by wkers in field. If wkers wear non-disposable gloves y should also be washed daily. As with any glove use, hs should be washed pri wearing gloves whenever gloves taken f such as lunch, f breaks, use bhroom. Many field containers may present a challenge when establishing a sanition program eir due size merial from which y constructed. Developing a program may require some on-farm ingenuity, but re many options consider such as high power washers commercially available bin washers. Field equipment sanition should be a considerion in future purchases field equipment containers so th it will be easier establish an effective field equipment sanition program. Harvest such as knives aprons should also be cleaned on a regular basis special tention should be given gloves wn by wkers in field.
