3 Background Cabinet approved a National Policy on Food and Nutrition Security, together with the Household Food and Nutrition Security Strategy The Strategy proposes immediate and medium-term interventions that can be implemented by government building on some of the current responses The policy and strategy are aligned to the priorities set out in the NDP Vision 2030 and Social Protection outcome 13 Food & nutrition security can be achieved through a delivery of interventions which promote sustained availability, accessibility and affordability of safe and nutritious food at national and household level.

4 The Household Food & Nutrition Security Strategy The main focus of the strategy is on household-level food security and nutrition, and propose immediate steps to: Strengthen the School Nutrition Programme (SNP) and extend it by means of introducing before-school breakfast, weekend and school holidays meals. Develop & test mechanisms to support Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres to offer meals to the children in their care. Establish a robust network of Food Distribution Centres (including but not limited to food kitchens), backed by a substantially larger financial commitment from the fiscus.

6 Household Food and Nutrition Programme DSD has introduced the Household Food and Nutrition Security Programme (HFNSP), which include the establishment of a network of Food Distribution Centres (FDCs). These are operated by NPOs as Implementing Agents that operate Food Distribution Centres (FDCs) and distribute food to Community Nutrition Development Centres (CNDCs). The HFNSP is therefore a response to the most vulnerable members of the society that seeks to provide direct food to the affected in order to raise their productive capacity. HFNP is a government programme to empower its citizens
