2 Priority : Improve national and regional institutional capacities in agricultural health and food safety, agricultural and marketing information, technical innovation systems, extension services to support food security and sustainable development One of the five (5) priorities identified by the Institute for 2010.
3 1 Support and facilitate Member States efforts to strengthen and modernize their agricultural health and food safety systems to comply with international agreements, standards and conventions. 2 Promote and facilitate the development and operation of transparent and efficient Agricultural and Marketing Information Systems in IICA Member Countries in the Region 3 Provide technical cooperation to support innovative systems and promote collaboration among countries
4 4 Support assessments of the extension services in the region to define a baseline and strategic programme for their modernization 5 Promote the adoption of appropriate technologies and agricultural practices (e.g Good Agricultural Practices) to enhance sustainable food production systems in urban and rural areas 6 Provide technical cooperation for the establishment of policies, programmes and institutional framework for the development of community bases agro-tourism in the region.

9 1 A project executed in collaboration with the Trade Facilitation Office of Canada, a not for profit organization which receives an annual subvention from the Government of Canada for its activities. 2 Other local partners: Ministry of Agriculture, New Guyana Marketing Corporation and the Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association. 3 The project seeks to prepare and assist Guyanese producers/exporters to access the Canadian Market

Completion of Needs Assessment for Shipping and Logistics and validation by collaborating partners 7. Preparation and Distribution of a Sourcing Guide for Packaging and Labeling
14 8. Hosting of seminars on Packaging, Labeling, Handling and Storage in Anna Regina, Parika, Black Bush Polder, Crabwood Creek and Tarlogie - over 150 producers and exporters benefitted. 9. Mission to Trade Fair in Vancouver one exporter and one IICA technician participated 10. Support to workshop held for Agro-processors and for the artisans 11. Support for Export Mission to Montreal and Toronto
15 12. Increased networking among fresh agro-foods Export Mission participants. 13. Establishment of partnerships for fresh food trade; partnership for processed food trade and partnership for the importation of packaging material. 14. Increase in the market share of one (1) of the Export Mission participants due to the increased local collaboration
16 15. Preparation of packaging material (boxes) for one exporter to specifications provided in an effort to support his trade activities as a pilot programme. Undertaken by Caribbean Containers Inc. 16. Utilization of local Consultants(experts) for workshops and seminars

18 1 Shipping time and air freight cost 2 Inadequate production levels of most fruits and vegetables 3 Lack of information regarding varieties of many of the fruits and vegetables which can be exported to Canada
19 4 Absence of mandatory farm certification programme (including implementation of GAPs) on farms which supply fruits and vegetables for export 5 Absence of the use of the Farmers Diary on farms from which fruits and vegetables are exported 6. Absence of continuous monitoring of farms from which produce are being accessed for export
20 1 2 3 Collaboration between Export Mission participants strengthened and more producers/ exporters will work with the Mission Team to increase trade with Canada Information regarding varieties of fruits and vegetables and times of the year when available to be accessed, compiled and made readily available to prospective importers in Canada Dissemination of Sourcing Guide for Packaging and Labeling material continued 4 Inter-agency collaboration will continue to facilitate and support increased trade with Canada

22 1 Guyana was declared free of CFF in Monitoring and surveillance activities continued by MoA in collaboration with IICA 3 4 Resurgence of the CFF noted in some previously free areas and in new ones like Linden and Parika emerged. Trapping, baiting and fruit collection activities continued in an effort to establish the level of re-infestation and to control levels in known areas.
23 1 Collaboration between MoA, USDA/APHIS IS and IICA with majority funding from USDA/APHIS IS to determine the level of re-infestation in communities between Linden and Lethem inclusive. 2 Trapping, baiting and fruit collection activities continued in an effort to establish control levels in known areas of infestation in Linden, Orealla/Siparuta, Parika, Timehri etc. 3 Support for the acquisition of material necessary for the sustainability of the CFF control programme

25 1 Provision of financial support for the ongoing CFF surveillance programme of the MoA 2 Provision of data required to evaluate the effectiveness of ongoing monitoring and surveillance programmes nationally 3 Provision of data which would be instrumental in the development of a long-term programme for the control or exclusion of the CFF in the Linden area. Lethem is still CFF free as at April 2011
26 4 Ongoing baiting and trapping exercises in Orealla, Siparuta, Linden, Parika and Timehri done in collaboration with the MoA 5 Continuous efforts to access funding for long-term control programmes which may lead ultimately to the eradication of the CFF. 6 Implementation of an 18-months programme in collaboration with the Ministries of Agriculture in Guyana, Suriname and Brazil. The work plan will be prepared with the Ministry soon.
27 Funding for a continuous monitoring and surveillance programme aimed at declaring major fruit and vegetable producing areas free of the CFF Funding for maintenance of pest free status of the cleared areas Application of other methods of control e.g. release of sterile male flies establishment of a laboratory to raise these flies. Preparation, operationalization and continuous re-evaluation of a national control programme
28 The absence of a Team of persons dedicated to this area of work with the resources required.
