2 Sarasota County: AG Lands Distribution & Extent Sarasota Food Policy Council History Formed in the 2005 spring as non-official, advisory committee to Sarasota County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC); facilitated by Sarasota County Extension & Office of Sustainability Purpose is to support the activities of the BOCC in rewriting of the county s Comprehensive Plan by developing policy recommendations for agriculture based on concepts of sustainability. An inclusive group representing the diverse community of Sarasota County, e.g., Agriculture producers and industries Health department, professionals & non-profits Environmental and social advocacy groups Elected officials: county, state & national School district and education professionals Engaged and concerned individuals Sarasota Community & Government Sustainability History Florida House Construction (1992) Env. 4 Sarasota Food Policy Council Accomplishments Facilitation of meetings with participants from the diversity of the Sarasota County community Policy recommendations were adopted as new agriculture policies the Comprehensive Plan of Sarasota County based upon: Sustainable agriculture Local community foodshed development Farmland protection Continuation of FPC requested by County Commissioners for implementation process after policy adoption Food Policy Example Future Land Use Chapter Policy Provide implementation incentives for: Coordinaton of community gardens & farms, and farmers markets on county lands & land development Local Farm to Institution purchasing & marketing Community food system assessments Farmland protection initiatives Urban agriculture, as well as traditional agriculture Supporting farms using sustainable agriculture Encouraging School District to use locally-grown foods in school breakfast & lunch program Food Policy Implementation Process Food Policy Implementation ReNewAbility Workshop Process Conduct community workshops to promote local foodshed development based on: the ReNewAbility process facilitation of stakeholders w/ diverse backgrounds and interests identification of individual assets & needs collaboration building for foodshed projects new food policies of Sarasota County Comprehensive Plan 4
