Teagasc Pig research dissemination day. Low cost solutions to control Salmonella. 12 th May 2015 Project Introduction GENERAL AIM: The present project aims to develop feasible control strategies through the pork production chain (sows, weaners, finishers and post-farm) to reduce the prevalence of Salmonella on farm as well as offering solutions for the post-farm stages. A novel aspect of this project is that it will focus on the implementation and validation of low cost solutions to control Salmonella including a cost-benefit analysis of these intervention measures.

Teagasc Pig research dissemination day. Low cost solutions to control Salmonella. 12 th May 2015 Project Introduction TASK: 1. The role of breeding pigs in the dissemination of infection. Potential control strategies in breeding pigs. 2. Control in weaners. The efficacy of organic acids. 3. Control in finishers. The efficacy of organic acids. 4. Improvement of cleaning in the lairage, a critical control point. 5. The cost of the infection for the farmer. Production parameters and farm factors related to the infection. 6. Control in a full production cycle

The role of the sows and gilts in the transmission AIM OF THE STUDY The study monitors sows and gilts through a complete reproductive cycle aiming at answering the following questions: Pattern of Salmonella shedding Risk of transmission of Salmonella to the offspring

Usefulness of in-feed butyric acid to control Salmonella in finishers

Usefulness of in-feed butyric acid to control Salmonella in finishers AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the ability of dietary supplementation with sodium butyrate in reducing the shedding of Salmonella in finishing pigs for 4weeks prior to slaughter Acid: Sodium-butyrate (Adimix ) Inclusion: 3 kg/tn of feed Duration of the treatment: 28 days (last month of finishing)

Usefulness of in-feed butyric acid to control Salmonella in finishers RESULTS Farm A Effective at the end of the treatment Control Treatment Day 0 Farm B Treatment Day 12 Control Treatment Day NO Effect Secondary infection by Ileitis Control Control Treatment Day 0 Control Treatment Day 12 Control Treatment Day 24

Usefulness of in-feed butyric acid to control Salmonella in finishers CONCLUSIONS The administration of acids (i.e. butyric acid) are useful if the concentration and duration of the treatment are appropriate. The use of butyric acid (3 kg/tn during 4 weeks) can reduce the shedding of Salmonella in finishers if other factors (such as concomitant diseases) are controlled. FUTURE WORK Analysis of blood results. Estimation of production parameters and cost-effectiveness of the treatment. Evaluation of other acids in the market.

The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection Is Salmonella affecting on-farm production parameters Is Salmonella decreasing productivity on your farm

The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection Which farm practices can reduce Salmonella Which others increase the risk of having Salmonella in the herd Short questionnaire focused on aspects potentially related to Salmonella: Herd characteristics Herd management Feeding practices Hygiene and biosecurity Herd health

The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection 1. HERD CHARACTERISTICS Herd size: Big herds have higher levels of Salmonella (more incoming sources) Slatted floor decreases the risk of Salmonella (less contact with faeces) Studies in Spain UK, USA, Germany or Belgium Is the presence of other species in the herd (particularly cattle) a risk factor for the dissemination of Salmonella

The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection 2. HERD MANAGEMENT All-in/all-out management Studies in Belgium, The Netherlands and Canada linked the AI/AO to lower Salmonella levels Farrowing Yes No 7 Weaning Is AI/AO beneficial for the control of Salmonella Finishing

Teagasc Pig research dissemination day. Low cost solutions to control Salmonella The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection 3. FEEDING PRACTICES Meal better than pelleted feed. Studies in Spain, Denmark, Belgium, France The use of fermented liquid feed reduced the risk of Salmonella (The Netherlands) FLF 13 Whey Meal 3 Pelleted Sows Weaners 1 Can we decrease the prevalence of Salmonella on the farm by using meal instead of pelleted feed 3 1 Weaners 2 2 Finishers Is FLF a good control strategy as well

Teagasc Pig research dissemination day. Low cost solutions to control Salmonella The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection 4. HYGIENE AND BIOSECURITY Optimal Changing rooms, hands washing and showers decreased the risk of biosecurity reduces Salmonella in a Belgium study. the level of Salmonella on the WILD ANIMALS VEHICLES farm Yes 29 No No 6 11 Birds Yes 17 Rodents Disposal carcass Feed Truck What is the risk of the presence of wild animals and vehicles

Teagasc Pig research dissemination day. Low cost solutions to control Salmonella The impact of Salmonella in production parameters and risk factors associated to the infection 5. HEALTH STATUS Does the health status of the herd affect the Salmonella values Diseases such as Blue ear (PRRS), meningitis, PMWS, E. coli or Ileitis can increase the risk of having Salmonella for long periods of time.
