2 Background RDD project, funded by DG ECHO, started as a pilot Drought Preparedness Initiatives in July 2006 Aims to reduce vulnerability and strengthen capacity to withstand drought amongst vulnerable communities in the Horn of Africa Focuses on DRM The project is being implemented by a number of NGOs in Pastoral areas of Oromia, Somali, Afar and SNNP Regions FAO provides technical coordination, capacity development and field level p p y p technical backstopping

7 Initiatives of La Nina responses FAO organized special RDD partners meeting on 27 Jan 2011 at Queen of Sheba Hotel; eight partners participated It was learnt that the situation in Southern and South eastern rangeland is changing from alarm phase to the action oriented livelihoods protection interventions Some partners started livelihoods lh protection activities while others are preparing project proposals
8 CORDAID Conducted an extensive community dialogue in Borana and North Kenya and re activated community level contingency plans using the principle of CMDRR in Liben, Arero and Dire districts Secured about Euro for Ethiopia and Kenya to support prioritized livelihoods protection interventions Submitted another proposal to ECHO to complement this initiative Euro( for 4 months) Water provision for human and livestock, livestock treatment using voucher schemes, commercial and slaughter destocking are indicated among the major activities
9 FARM Africa Received the contract approved by ECHO recently Anticipate flooding in Hammer district in the later stages of the La Nina Specific activities arebased on community level risk analysis and community response funds Planning to provide slaughtering gkits to support the slaughter destocking if any Will access additional funding if needed, the g, existing ECHO project is basically part of the longer term DRR program that aims to diversify and improve livelihoods
10 COOPI Implements various livelihoods projects in Guji zone of Oromia and Liben zone of Somali region Submitted project proposal to HRF as a response to the La Nina episode, and received comments, based up on which the proposal is now ready to be re submitted COOPI is also planning to submit another project proposal to ECHO
11 DCA DCA finances local partners in two districts of Bale zone (Dawe Ketchen and Gura Dhamole) and four districts in Borana zone (Dillo, Miyo,Dire and Dugda Dawa). Assessed dthe situation ti and developed da concept note for ECHO funding about Euro The anticipated activities include: water rationing, water treatment, cash for work, animal health, feed supply, capacity building of health extension At the recovery time DCA is planning to conduct rehabilitation i of water points, seed provision, construction of roof harvesting, and rangeland management among others
12 Save the Children Fed.Inc Will use 20% of the PILLAR plus project fund for strengthening the cereal groups in Hudet and Moyale Somali Submitted additional concept note for the USAID crisis modifier, the concept note is agreed and now the agency is finalizing the detail budget Jointly, in collaboration with CARE and FAO, Save the Children had discussions with Borana zone to undertake animal health interventions Reported that the local lgovernment already started water rationing for people in Hudet district
13 Oxfam GB Planning animal health activities, water points rehabilitation, commercial destocking etc in Somali region under RDD Mobilized about GBP for water trucking in Harshin district i t as requested tdby the Regional lgovernment. Developing two boreholes, in Dembel and in Awbare woredas, supported vaccination and treatment /de worming campaigns of Livestock in shinile zone and Jigjiga zones, provided training for CAHWs, and supported rangeland rehabilitation activitiesto to improve natural resource management through CFW. Developed contingency plan to La Nina and soliciting fund
14 VSF Germany Implement the regular RDD activities in South Omo Community based model contingency yplans for disaster management further developed and tested Local response capacities and systems for asset protection, management and preparedness p action are further improved. Promote the integration of outcome into policy development and DRR strategy No activities related to La Nina responses
15 ACF Operates in Dhas, Miyo and Moyale Doing limited water trucking and well and other water source rehabilitation Planning Animal health interventions in Somali and Oromia Regions
