1 Errata to Illinois Pesticide Applicator Training Workbook: General Standards (SP 39-W) Publication Date: November 2016 We are aware of two errors within the 2016 General Standards Workbook. Error 1: Page 24. Item 14. Incorrect formulation application rate. This error was corrected during the second printing of the 2016 workbook Error 2: Pages Incorrect Sample Questions and Answers This error occurred during the second printing of the 2016 workbook The following pages correct these errors:

2 GENERAL STANDARDS WORKBOOK 14. You need to apply a 50WP fungicide on a lawn measuring 160 feet by 125 feet. The formulation application rate is 8 ounces per 1,000 square feet. How many pounds of the fungicide do you need to treat this lawn? What We Know... % active ingredient = % Area = ft 2 Rate = oz/1000ft 2 First, determine the area of the lawn in square feet. Since the formulation application rate is given as amount of product per 1,000 square feet, we do not need to convert to acres. Area = Length x Width = 160 ft x 125 ft = ft 2 To determine the amount needed, multiply the area by the formulation application rate. We will also need to convert our formulation application rate to oucnes per square foot. Amount needed = Area x Rate = ft 2 x oz 1,000 ft 2 = 20,000 ft 2 x oz / ft 2 Finally, Convert to pounds by dividing by 16, which is the number of ounces in 1 pound 160 oz = 16 oz/lb lbs = ounces We need 10 pounds of the 50WP fungicide to treat the lawn. 24

3 GENERAL STANDARDS WORKBOOK Sample Questions These pre-test questions are meant to give you a feel for the format of the IDA exams. Actual questions on the IDA exam will be different from these. Choose the best answer. Understanding Pesticides 1. Which of the following is not a type of pesticide? a) Insecticide b) Herbicide c) Attractant d) Surfactant 2. Pesticide failure can be caused by which of the following? a) Pest resistance b) Inappropriate rate of pesticide used c) Environmental factors unfavorable for pesticide activity Labels and Labeling 3. Which of the following is important to consider when purchasing and applying a pesticide? a) The label is a legal document b) Before you buy and apply a pesticide, read the label c) A General Use Pesticide is not given a classification on the label Human Pesticide Protection 4. The boss pickup that is driven to pick up the pesticide has a 50 lb bag of chicken feed in the pickup bed. What should the person do in order to best protect themselves and the feed? a) Place the case of pesticide in the bed of the pickup, securing it so that it doesn t spill. b) Place the chicken feed on top of the pesticide case so that it doesn t move during 58

4 transport. c) Place the case of pesticide in the empty passenger side of the pickup cab. d) Place the chicken feed in the passenger side of cab and the pesticide in the pickup bed. 6. While in the pesticide storage area, you noticed that a brown, glass pesticide container is cracked above the level of liquid in the container. What should be done? a) Put a note on the pesticide container pointing out that it is cracked and to be careful in using that container. b) Put the pesticide in a brown glass beer bottle and attach the label from the old container to the bottle. c) Put the pesticide in a new, white polyethylene container that is the same as most pesticide containers.
