2018 Customer Sprayer Clinic Noteboom Implement Winter 2018

Welcome Josh Horstman Agronomist Noteboom Implement/CHS-Farmers Alliance

Types of application Broadcast Directed and banding Boomless / Boom X tender

Broadcast What is broadcast spraying? The application of a spray solution to an entire area to be sprayed, like an entire field

Banding/Directed What is band/directed spraying? Banding/Directed is the application of a spray solution to a given band width, such as 7 to 10 inches, and is typically directed over the row of crop with one to three nozzles.

Boomless What is boomless spraying? Boomless spraying uses very wide fan pattern tips to cover swaths. These are especially useful in field edges, parks, pastures, forestry, rangeland, aquatic plant management and rights-of-way.

Nozzle versus tip Quick change nozzle assembly Includes spray tip, gasket, & cap

Technozzlegy: Plant health map

Technozzlegy: Plant health map

Droplet size, drift, and coverage How does droplet size effect timing and placement? It affects drift potential, allowing more spraying time It affects the ability of the gallons you apply to cover the plant. A balance between drift and coverage must be struck

Factors impacting drift Wind speed and direction Droplet size Boom height Relative humidity Air temperature Temperature inversion

Methods to reduce drift Change to a nozzle that produces more coarse droplets Use the lower end of the pressure range for a tip Lower boom height Increase nozzle flow rate size Spray when wind speeds are less than 10 mph Spray when wind is moving away from sensitive areas or crops Use a drift control additive

Droplet size Modern Way ASABE S-572 standard uses six droplet classification categories:

Determine Tip Size - Technozzlegy To get the basics, fill in the blanks from applicator input and their chemical label. Now you need to know (in bold): Application type: Broadcast Chemical: Round-Up (systemic post-emerge herbicide) Chemical application rate (GPA): Travel speed (MPH): Spray nozzle spacing (W): Droplet size: Pressure (PSI):

Glyphosate / Roundup 2-3 #/ac Sprayable AMS oz Rate gal water/ac Coarse, Medium, or Fine Droplet Size Systemic Herbicide The best JD spray nozzles approved for this application is PSULDQ2004, PSULDQ2005, PSLDX or PSERQ, depending on environmental conditions and weed size and type

Pasture Spraying Medium to Fine Droplet Size Contact Herbicides 15 GPA Water The best JD spray nozzle approved for this application is PSERQ or PSLDXQ

Pre-Emerge Herbicide & Fertilizer Coarse Droplet Size Tapered, wide angle spray pattern to help promote uniform fertilizer and soil applied herbicide application The best JD spray nozzle approved for this application is PSHFQ

Liberty 3 #/ac Sprayable AMS oz Rate 20 gal water/ac- Medium to Fine Droplet Size- Contact Herbicide The best JD spray nozzle approved for this application is PSGAT, but PSLDX or PSERQ will also work

Insecticides Medium droplet size Good coverage is key The best JD spray nozzle for this application is PSGAT, but PSLDX or PSERQ will also work if tank-mixing with herbicides

Plant Health - Fungicides Medium Droplet Size Fungicides move through the Xylem cells in the plant, which only move up inside the plant cells, so good coverage on the entire plant, especially the lower portion of the plant is critical The best JD spray nozzle approved for this application is PSGAT, but PSLDX, PSERQ, PSULDQ2004, or PSULDQ2005 will also work if tank-mixing with herbicides

Can You Afford Worn Spray Tips? Cause crop damage Produce excessive residue carryover

Maintenance Tips do NOT last forever

Spray tip testing PM23890-Best for flow rates below 1 GPM, including spray tips for herbicide and insecticide applications. PM24200-Check liquid fertilizer, irrigation, and sprinkler nozzle flow rates. Best for flow rate between 1-4 GPM
