1 International Journal of scientific research and management (IJSRM) Volume 3 Issue 3 Pages \ Website: ISSN (e): Analysis Of Constrats Influencg Sorghum Farmers Usg Garrett s Rankg Technique; A Comparative Study Of India And Nigeria Jimjel. Zalkuwi 1, Rakesh Sgh 2, Madhusudan Bhattarai 3, O.P Sgh 4 Dayakar Rao 5 Introduction It is quite natural that a change the system of agriculture a country of more than a million people should be a well thought out process, which requires utmost care and caution. There may be several impediments on the way. An understandg of these problems and prospects will go a long way decision makg Methodology The study was carried out India and Nigeria. Both countries India and Nigeria were selected purposively beg the 3 rd and the 4 th Sorghum producers the world. So India, Maharashtra was purposively selected based on its production. The state has six Divisions with 36 Districts; A list of all Sorghum producg districts was prepared the highest sorghum producg 2 districts (Solapur and Akola) were selected purposively. 2 villages from Solapur and two villages from Akola (Shirapur, Kalman, Kkhed and Kanzara) were purposively selected on the basis maximum Sorghum production. A list of Sorghum producer was prepared each village and the total of 240 Sorghum producers were selected randomly. In 1,2,4 Department of Agricultural Economics, Institute of Agricultural science, BHU, Varanasi ICRISAT India 5 DSR India Correspondg Author s jzalkwi4u@gmail.com Nigeria, Adamawa State was selected on the basis of highest production level was selected purposively Nigeria. The state has twenty-one Local Government Areas which are categorized to four agricultural zones; South West, Central, North West and North East Zone. Twenty percent Local Government Area have been ( i.e four LGA) have been purposively selected from each zone, comprise Viz; Ganye, Guyuk, Mubi south and Girei. Analytical tool Information regardg the problems faced by the farmers sorghum cultivation will be procured. Constrats were identified consultation with the experts of sorghum cultivation and farmers were be asked to rank the problems proposed to them. Garrett s Rankg Technique provides the change of orders of constrats and advantages to numerical scores. The prime advantage of this technique over simple frequency distribution is that the constrats are arranged based on their severity from the pot of view of respondents. Hence, the same number of respondents on two or Jimjel. Zalkuwi 1 IJSRM volume 3 issue 3 March 2015 [ Page 2435

2 more constrats may have been given different rank. Garrett s formula for convertg ranks to factors, the scores of dividual respondents will be added together and divided by the total number percent is:percent position = 100 * (Rij of the respondents for whom scores will be added. 0.5)/Nj Where, Rij = rank given for i th constrat by j th dividual; These mean scores for all the constrats will be arranged descendg order; the constrats will be accordgly ranked. Nj = number of constrat ranked by j th dividual. Constrats to Sorghum Production Garrett rankg technique has been used to The per cent position of each rank will be converted to scores referrg to the table given analyse the factors fluencg the production of sorghum by the respondents by Garrett and Woodworth (1969). For each Table 1 Percentage Positions and their correspondg Garetts Table values Rank Percentage Position Garrett Table 1 100(1-0.5)/ (2-0.5)/ (3-0.5)/ (4-0.5)/ (5-0.5)/ (6-0.5)/ (7-0.5)/ (8-0.5)/ (9-0.5)/ (10-0.5)/ (11-0.5)/ (12-0.5)/ Source; Field survey 2014 Percentage position = 100 (Rij 0.5) /Nj Under Garrett Technique the percentage position is calculated by usg the followg formulae Where Rij = Rank given for i th variable by the j th respondent Jimjel. 3 Nj = Number of variable rank by the respondent The respondents were asked to rank the twelve factors identified for the purpose of this studies as 1, 2, 3, order to know their preference the selection of constrat. The Results and Discussio calculated percentage position for the rank 1, 2, 3,...12 and their correspondent Garrett table as show Table 5 :23, For factors, the total score is calculated by multiplyg the number of respondents rankg that factor as 1, 2, 3,,,,,, and 12 S/ Factor Rank Tota Total Total Rank N l No score mean India of resp ond ent India India 1 shortage/hig h cost of puts 2 adequate farm credit 3 Striga festation 4 Shortage of labour 5 Variability amount of rafall 6 Pests and diseases 7 Birds festation 8 Cattle rearers 9 Inadequate research and extension support 10 Land tenure Lack of good storage facilities 12 Low price of sorghum Table 2 Rankg constrat associated to sorghum production India The result from table 5.24 dicates the various challenges/constrat experienced by the sorghum farmers the study area. The study revealed that, the major challenges experienced by farmers cultivatg sorghum India are the low price of sorghum (75.34), variability amount of rafall (74.48), adequate agriculture credit (74.48), adequate research and extension support Jimjel. 5 The followg problems are more pronounced by the farmers are presented below 1. Shortage/High Cost of Inputs The farmers also complaed of shortage/high cost of puts such as improved seeds, fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides as majority of the farmers cannot afford to purchase the right quantity needed to crease sorghum production. This fdg collaborates with Kwaghe et al. (2000) who reported high cost of important farm puts militatg agast efficient farmg. It also agreed with the fdgs of Tashkalma et al. (2010) Zalkuwi (2012). 2. Striga Infestation Majority of farmers identified striga festation as a major problem affectg them and has no chemical to control it. Striga is capable of wipg out the entire crop; fact it is very destructive. Most of the farmers look forward to gettg a control or preventive measures for this witched weed/striga. This is consonance with the the fdgs of Zalkuwi 2013 Inadequate Agricultural Credits Inaccessibility of credit facilities also militate agast efficient sorghum cultivation the study area. Most of the farmers compla of favouritism grantg loans to dividuals who rarely engage agricultural production. The implication of this scenario was that, the farmers who would have benefited from the credit facilities did not do so, from the underutilization of these puts and hence, subsequently low productivity Variability Rafall Farmers complaed of shortage of rafall durg the sensitive croppg period of sorghum production. So this led to low productivity. Low price of sorghum Farmers also complaed of low price of Sorghum compare to other crops, which resulted to less profit compare to other crops so that is why they concentrate on other crops with higher prices Inadequate research and extension support Inaccessibility of research and extension support facilities also militates agast efficient sorghum cultivation the study area. Most of the farmers compla of no extension visit to them to enhance their agricultural production References Garret, H.E. and R.S. Woodworth. Statistics Psychology and Education.
