Introduction

European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB)

European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) History Established by European scientists in 1978, the European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) is working to promote biotechnology throughout Europe and beyond.

European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) Mission The mission of EFB is to promote the safe, sustainable and beneficial use of the life sciences, to promote research and innovation at the cutting edge of biotechnology, to provide a forum for interdisciplinary and international cooperation, to improve scientific education and to facilitate an informed dialogue between scientists and the public.

European Federation of Biotechnology (EFB) Members and Organization With 108 Institutional members from across Europe and personal members, the EFB has 14 Regional Branch Offices in Europe. The EFB Central Office (ECO) is located in Barcelona, Spain. Membership administration, organization of Executive Board meetings and General Assemblies, website management and organization of the European Congresses on Biotechnology are some of the main responsibilities of ECO.

The European Association for Bioindustries History and Organisation The European Association for Bioindustries (EuropaBio) was created in 1996 to provide a voice for the biotech industry in Europe. The three main segments of biotechnology are represented through sectoral councils: Healthcare (Red Biotech), Industrial (White Biotech) and Agri-Food (Green Biotech). The corporate members are involved in human and animal healthcare, diagnostics, bioinformatics, chemicals, crop protection, agriculture, food and environmental products and services. The board of management is made up of representatives of member companies and is supported by the secretariat.

The European Association for Bioindustries Members EuropaBio has 62 corporate and 7 associate members operating worldwide, 2 Bioregions and 19 national biotechnology associations representing some 1800 small and medium sized enterprises.

Creating Value for the Customer, Coworker/Co-owner and Citizen Goal: Focus on optimizing customer satisfaction while setting minimum boundary conditions for the other variables Tools: Raw Materials - Science/Technology - Product Development - Manufacturing - Service - Supply Chain - Sales/Marketing

Creating Value for the Customer, Coworker/Co-owner and Citizen Sustainable Value Creation well-balanced and anchored in Science-Industry-Society Concept of a more sustainable use of limited resources as a driving force for the rapid development of sustainable bioeconomies in US - EU Value creation by the conversion of abundant and inexpensive raw material into higher value products

Innovation

Global Challenges R.Wohlgemuth, New Biotechnology 25, (2009)

Ressource Efficiency Product Intermediate Intermediate Raw Material R.Wohlgemuth, Chem. Biochem. Eng. Q. 25 (1) (2011)

Science/Technology Value creation by integrated bioprocesses: Molecular and engineering aspects of the overall bioprocess are interconnected R.Wohlgemuth, Chem. Biochem. Eng. Q. 25 (1) (2011)

Outlook and Opportunities

Sustainable Bioeconomy With the Common Understanding and Agreement that this is the Way Forward, bioeconomy - subfields of mutual interest to the US and EU can be defined Establishing Information Exchange US- EU in these bioeconomy-subfields US-EU Exchange Program of Scientists in these defined bioeconomy subfields

Sustainable Bioeconomy The Time of Action is now and extensive efforts are needed for the transition of the US- and EU-economies to a sustainable bioeconomy Building New Value Creation Chains Focus on Generally Recognized As Safe Biological Cells

Sustainable Bioeconomy Moving towards the Whole Molecular System of Cells R.Wohlgemuth, Biotechnol.J. 9, (2009).

Thank You for Your Attention! Roland Wohlgemuth
