2 GLOBAL CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGES AND GLOBAL WARMING DEMOGRAPHIC CHANGES Population growth Increase income Urbanization Aging INCREASED DEMAND FOR WATER, ENERGY AND FOOD DEVELOPMENT OF NEW PRODUCTION SYSTEMS Lower environmental impacts Reduction of existing pollution DEPLETION OF NATURAL RESOURCES BIOECONOMY EMERGES AS ONE OF THE MAIN DRIVERS TO ASSIST IN SOLVING THESE ISSUES
3 GLOBAL BIOECONOMY Sectors of a new economy based on renewable biological resources (or biomass) are still emerging and do not have a fulfilled defined industrial and business structure. Competition, in this case, is based on innovations. New biomasses, deconstruction and conversion technologies, bioproducts and business models are being tested and improved. Considering this, several countries have been structuring strategies, policies and programs for the development and support of their bio-industries.
4 GLOBAL BIOECONOMY Common aspects across the strategies: Add value to primary production Use of the waste streams Reduce the dependence on fossil raw materials, replacing with biomass Develop of new productive systems and business models INTENSIVE IN SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION
