1 INTEGRATED PROJECT Semester 1 Academic Session 017/018 ERT316 Reaction Engineering, ERT317 Biochemical Engineering, ERT318 Unit Operations & ERT319 Industrial Waste Treatment Overview of Integrated Project Integrated Project is a problem-oriented project applied for the second year and third year students of Bioprocess Engineering Programme integrating various courses in a particular semester as tabulated in Table 1. This Integrated Project is implemented in fulfilling the requirements of complex problems to be incorporated in the academic curriculum as far as the Program Outcome (PO) and Outcome Based Education (OBE) are concerned. The Integrated Project provides students with introductory elements of engineering design as to prepare the students for Bioprocess Plant Design I and II (ERT44 and ERT48) that need to be taken in their fourth year of study. The Integrated Project report is submitted at the end of semester and there will be a presentation of the Integrated Project in week 14 or 15 succeeding the report submission. The report guidelines and contents are based on the individual courses involved.

2 The marks contributed by the Integrated Project are based on the particular courses which lie between 15-0 % out of total 100% marks of the courses. Abbreviation, list of Figures, Tables etc. (which applicable): Items should be in the order in which they appear in the text Introduction Appendices: Supporting material of considerable length, lists, commentaries, questionnaires etc., which would interrupt the main text, should be included as appendices References: The following styles of referencing are acceptable: Harvard or numbered Refer to UniMAP guideline GUIDELINES / CONTENTS OF INTEGRATED PROJECT REPORT INTRODUCTION a) Introduction on the raw material selections, production processes, product applications, current demand and commercialisation values. b) Draw of process flow diagram, p&id by using Microsoft Visio. c) Introduction on each subject- Part A for ERT316, ERT317, ERT318 and ERT319 ERT317 BIOCHEMICAL ENGINEERING a) Determine/identify the metabolism pathway of microorganism used in order to produce the desired product. b) Develop the growth kinetics by calculating the specific growth rate, doubling time and yield. c) Analyze the stoichiometric equation of microbial growth and product formation and calculate the elemental balances and degree of reduction for unknown reaction. ERT316 REACTION ENGINEERING a) Justify type of reactor used in the process b) Propose an appropriate design of the reactor (reactor sizing) and state any assumption(s) made.

5 ERT318 UNIT OPERATIONS a) Determine the unit operations used for product separation and purification. b) Determine the technical information of the selected unit i.e. number of equilibrium stages, height of the column. Calculate the flow rate and compositions of all streams (feed and outlet streams) connected to/from the respective unit. c) For the unit of interest, identify which variable that can be manipulated that has substantial impact on the production. ERT319 INDUSTRIAL WASTE TREATMENT a) Identify waste produced from the plant and determine its characteristic (eg calculation BOD, COD, etc). b) Propose the waste treatment processes (physical, chemical and biological process) c) Design the basic structure of any ONE of waste treatment unit operations.
