Assets /SPRG, Aalto University 2 (12) 1.1 Main Results The purpose of this section is to describe what are the main assets (Cloud SW results) that the company has developed (together with the other Cloud partners) during the A Cloud SW asset is intellectual property (see classification below), which is: 1) identified and defined 2) exploitable in business 3) reusable in more than one business case Assets Classification: 1) Stand-alone asset The asset can be licensed or sold as an independent solution Sub-assets may be needed Examples: product-like assets, entire solutions, product platforms, productized service platforms 2) Sub-asset The asset is a part of another asset, serving other assets Cannot typically be sold as a stand-alone asset 3) Component asset The asset is used to replacing commercially available ready-made components E.g. design blocks, individual program modules or service items 4) Process assets Tools, process models, task guides, review lists, etc. Asset 1 Practices for Scaling Agile & Lean to Large, Globally Distributed Projects Asset1 Description Starting to use agile and lean in a small single-team project is quite straight forward compared to taking agile and lean into use in a large multi-team project that is distributed between several countries and time-zones. This asset consists of practices and lessons learned for scaling agile and lean to large, globally distributed projects. The practices and lessons learned have been collected from real case projects that have taken these practices into use and learned which practices do work and are useful and in what kind of circumstances and which practices do not work. We have also collected challenges and problems that may occur. This collection of practices and lessons learned is a living collection, i.e. more and more practices and lessons are added along the way. The practices and lessons learned are used by the projects taking lean and agile into use, as well as projects that have already started their lean and agile journey and want to continuously improve.
Assets /SPRG, Aalto University 3 (12) Asset Class Contact Person Business Impact Estimation Asset Valuation Asset Origin Future Plans (ownership/use) Operational asset processes / methods / techniques Maria Paasivaara Maria.Paasivaara@tkk.fi This asset will contribute to the first Cloud SW breakthrough target by improving the processes and methods used by the Finnish software companies. (1. The competitive position, volume and profitability of the Finnish software and software intensive industry in global markets improve significantly.) Significant This asset is based on industrial case studies from which data is collected and analyzed and the results, i.e., practices and lessons learned, are reported by Aalto university researchers. The contributing industrial partners of this asset are: Tieto, Nokia Siemens Networks and Ericsson. This asset will be further developed when new data and experiences from new case studies are collected and added to this asset. This asset is available for all Cloud SW industrial partners. The partners that have taken part in the development of this asset will use the practices and lessons learned in their lean and agile journey when continuously improving their way of working. Asset 2 Asset2 Description Asset Class Contact Person Agile Coaching Practices for Distributed Projects Coaching and coaches are important facilitators when taking lean and agile practices into use in software development companies. How should coaching be arranged when coaching globally distributed projects? How can a network of coaches work effectively and efficiently, and learn from each other? This asset consists of 1) practices and lessons learned on coaching distributed software development projects that are taking agile and lean practices into use, and 2) practices and experiences on working as an agile coaching team. The practices and lessons learned have been collected from agile coaches coaching globally distributed projects and from globally distributed case projects that implemented agile and lean practices with help of an agile coaching team. Operational asset processes / methods / techniques Maria Paasivaara Maria.Paasivaara@tkk.fi
Assets /SPRG, Aalto University 4 (12) Business Impact Estimation Asset Valuation Asset Origin Future Plans (ownership/use) This asset will contribute to the first Cloud SW breakthrough target by improving the processes and methods used by the Finnish software companies. (1. The competitive position, volume and profitability of the Finnish software and software intensive industry in global markets improve significantly.) Average This asset is based on industrial case studies from which data is collected and analyzed and the results, i.e., practices and lessons learned, are reported by Aalto university researchers. The contributing industrial partner of this asset is: Tieto. This asset will be further developed when new data and experiences from new case studies are collected and added to this asset. This asset is available for the usage of all Cloud SW industrial partners. The study will continue with the contributing industrial partner, which will utilize the created knowledge when actively further developing and expanding their agile and lean coaching activities. In the future the coaching activities will be expanded to a global coaching / mentoring network of agile and lean coaches and experiences of this activity will be collected and reported to the Cloud SW partners. Asset 3 Asset3 Description Release Planning Practices for Large Scale Agile & Lean Software Development Release planning for a large scale, globally distributed, agile and lean software development project is quite a challenging task. The current release planning knowledge is created for traditional waterfall type of projects, thus this knowledge is not very useful for agile and lean context. New practices and processes are needed. This asset consists of practices and lessons learned for release planning in large scale agile and lean projects. This asset describes how requirements are created, prioritized, scheduled and assigned in lean multi-team software product development organizations which employ a Scrum-based software development method. In Scrum-based agile software development methods the whole release is not planned on detailed level in the beginning of the release project. Instead, planning and development is performed incrementally and iteratively in multiple nested planning horizons. The near future activities are planned on a high detail level and far future activities on a more abstract level. This technique is known as rolling wave planning. The practices and lessons learned for agile and lean release planning have been collected from real case projects that have taken these practices into use and learned which practices do work and are useful and in what kind of circumstances and which practices do not work. We have also collected challenges and problems that may occur.

The contributing industrial partners of this asset are: F-Secure and Ericsson. This asset will be further developed when new data and experiences from new case studies are collected and added to this asset. This asset is available for usage for all Cloud SW industrial partners. The partners that have taken part in the development of this asset will use the practices and lessons learned in their lean and agile journey when continuously improving their way of working. Asset 4 Asset4 Description Asset Class Contact Person Business Impact Estimation Agilefant Agilefant is the top-ranking open source (MIT license) tool for backlog management. In its class, Agilefant has the best features, usability and conceptual fit to the needs of real-world lean/agile organizations. Software Offering Asset Jarno Vähäniitty jarno@agilefant.org To date, Agilefant has provided hundreds of software organizations worldwide a free electronic tool for backlog management. At IPSS, where Agilefant is used to manage all the work of the entire organization, Agilefant has had a significant impact in helping IPSS progress in its lean/agile transformation (see IPSS's business case for details). Research-wise, Agilefant has provided us a test bed to evaluate and refine the methodological findings and insights gained in research work in practice. This asset has and will in the coming years contribute to the program's 1st (improving Finnish SW industry) and 2nd (new product & service concepts) breakthrough targets; in , it will also contribute to the 3rd breakthrough target (ecosystem).
Assets /SPRG, Aalto University 6 (12) Asset Valuation Asset Origin Future Plans (ownership/ use) Significant This asset has been developed by Software Process Research Group of Aalto University, in co-operation with F-Secure, IPSS and some other companies not participating in the. By the end of Cloud Software Program, Agilefant has become the market leader of electronic open source backlog management tool, possessing the best features, most users, and a passionate community. Through this, Agilefant has created and sustains an international Industry-Research ecosystem, where software organizations are getting an excellent and continuously improving tool, and scientists are in return provided with the hard data needed to publish the world's best empirical research. In addition, the Agilefant Ecosystem provides business opportunities for lean/agile experts as they get paid by adopter organizations for helping out in their lean transformation and developing new features. For adopter organizations who grant access to their data for research purposes, the use of Agilefant shall remain free forever. Asset 5 Asset5 Description Asset Class Contact Person Business Impact Estimation Linking Strategy, Customer Value and Daily Work in a Lean Software Enterprise As evident e.g. from Scrum Guide 2011, agile software development continues to concentrate on the perspective of a single team in an individual development project, leaving the links to enterprise, business and product planning and project portfolio management largely unaddressed. In this asset we have and will continue to explore these links (and the consequences and symptoms when such are missing) as represented by the partner companies and the latest scientific as well as trade literature. Operational asset processes / methods / techniques Jarno Vähäniitty jarno@agilefant.org While this asset has provided the conceptual framework and the methodological ideas behind Agilefant, their applicability, as the first framework for linking e.g. product and portfolio management with agile software development extends to all software organizations striving for lean transformation. As part of the 'Scaling Agile Software Development. Perfecting & automating the cloud software R&D engine' task of the Lean Software Enterprise work package, this asset contributes to the 1st program breakthrough target (improving Finnish software industry). A first, practitioner-friendly version of the results was in 2010 published in the 'Towards Agile Product and Portfolio Management' ( oliomanagement.pdf) practitioner book, and its scientific version will be published in Q4/2011 in Jarno Vähäniitty's doctoral dissertation (draft
Assets /SPRG, Aalto University 7 (12) download: Asset Valuation Significant Asset Origin Software Process Research Group of Aalto University, in co-operation with F- Secure, IPSS, Ericsson, as well as some other companies not participating in the Cloud Program. Future Plans (ownership/ use) In the coming two program years the results are to be published in leading scientific forums (2-3 ISI-ranked journal publications) and implemented in Agilefant (see asset) for industrial impact. Asset 6 Teaching Global Software Engineering Asset6 Description Asset Class Nowadays large part of the software development projects are globally distributed, i.e., the cooperating software development professionals are no longer located at the same office, but at different offices in different countries. Thus, the software development professionals need to learn to cooperate and communicate across distances, time-zones and cultures. In Finland, for our software development companies to be able to perform effectively and efficiently, we need to teach these collaborative skills to our software development personnel already at the university. The best way to teach these skills is learning by doing, i.e., working as member of a globally distributed project team. Thus, in this asset we have created both knowledge and a network of partners for arranging this kind of courses. This asset consists of two parts: 1) We have built a collaborative network of universities for arranging globally distributed project courses. 2) We have planned and arranged globally distributed project courses and collected our lessons learned on how to arrange this kind of courses. We have arranged a distributed project course between Aalto University (Finland), University of Cologne (Germany), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) and Savannah School of Art and Design (USA). This course will be arranged again starting Oct We have also built a relationship with the University of Victoria (Canada) and have just started a project course with them. (1. The competitive position, volume and profitability of the Finnish software and software intensive industry in global markets improve significantly.) we ll see This asset is developed together with the collaborating universities by planning and arranging globally distributed project courses together and gathering good practices and lessons learned for arranging this kind of courses in the future. Contributing partners: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Cologne, Savannah School of Art and Design and University of Victoria. This asset will be further developed by arranging two globally distributed project courses with the same network of partners during All the knowledge gathered will be available to all Cloud SW partners. The knowledge will be utilized, e.g. when building Software Factories to other countries and arranging distributed projects in them.
