DECOR Delivery of context-sensitive organizational knowledge Contract number: Project acronym: Project name: Key action: Action line: IST DECOR Delivery of context-sensitive organizational knowledge KA II: New Methods of Work and Electronic Commerce II.1.2 Knowledge Management for ecommerce & ework Project logo: List of participants: DFKI, The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, Knowledge Management Group, Kaiserslautern Germany ICCS, The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece PLANET ERNST & YOUNG, Athens Greece, the leading Greek management consulting company SEMA Group Belgium, Brussels, the Belgian arm of a European-wide acting consulting company delivering systems, services, and systems integration IKA, The Social Security Institute, the most important social security institution in Greece DHC - Dr. Herterich & Consultants, Saarbrücken Germany, an innovative software provider and consulting company in the area of logistical processes for chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industry Project Duration: July June 2002 Total costs: N.N. Commission funding: EURO Project Presentation DECOR (IST ) 1/8
Project Main Goals DECOR attempts to develop integrated methods and tools for active, context-sensitive and self-adaptive delivery of organizational knowledge at the business-process level. Results will comprise the realization of structured archives with domain ontologies and process models as key structures, process modelling and enactment tools, and a methodology to support organizational take-up. Development and validation will be performed in three test cases in the health care administration sector. Project Presentation DECOR (IST ) 2/8
Key Issues DECOR aims at providing a structured archive, organized around the notion of the company s business processes which are equipped with active, context-sensitive knowledge delivery to promote a better exploitation of knowledge sources. DECOR s technical R&D objectives are 1. to clarify the structuring elements for a sufficiently well-organized archive 2. to identify the necessary ontologies to represent the background knowledge of creation and use of documents, and 3. to provide tool and methodological support for modelling these ontologies in knowledge archive (OM) projects; 4. to employ strong and weak business process models as a structuring element to represent the context of information creation and application; 5. to extend the paradigm of workflow systems to automatically provide activity- and context specific relevant information; 6. to create a methodology for building & installation of processoriented organizational memories. Project Presentation DECOR (IST ) 3/8
Technical Approach / Expected Results Project Project Presentation Presentation DECOR DECOR (IST ) (IST ) 4/8
Expected Achievements / Impact A) DECOR Process-oriented Knowledge Archive DECOR develops an architecture for a structured archive of various (multimedia) knowledge and documents, organized around the notion of business processes performed in the company. DECOR demonstrates the practical feasibility of the approach by realizing all necessary modules required in real-world application scenarios, on the basis of existing and upcoming standards. DECOR realizes the concept as demonstration of best practice in three pilot user scenarios, and fills the archives with operational data. DECOR validates and tests the business adequacy and technological feasibility of archive building in the three user sites, as well as the impact of process-oriented storage on archive usage and usefulness B) DECOR Workflow-triggered Knowledge Delivery Toolkit DECOR develops a modeling formalism and tool for describing weak workflow structures based upon analysis of pilot user situations, as well as the scientific literature. The so-described weak workflow structures will be used as organizing models for the process-oriented knowledge archive. DECOR implements a weak workflow machine enacting such business processes DECOR specifies and realizes a workflow-triggered activation method which automatically launches queries from the running workflow to the knowledge archive. The activation method, instantiating generic query templates (which were modeled at process definition time) dynamically from within the running workflow, is the basis for active user support. DECOR gathers insights and experiences about the feasibility of the concept through the three pilot systems. C) DECOR Business Process & Knowledge Modelling Toolkit DECOR identifies the representation means required for structuring ontologies, knowledge source descriptions on the basis of ontologies, and workflow-triggered knowledge needs on the basis of workflows and knowledge source descriptions. DECOR realizes modelling support by appropriate editors and tools, as far as possible on the basis of extending an existing widespread strong-structure BPM tool. In order to guide and accompany all modeling activities, the DECOR Business Knowledge Method will facilitate the organisational take-up. The method shall enable identification of required knowledge embedded in work processes, examination of the structuring of corporate knowledge into reusable knowledge objects, as well as the associated managerial implications in the organisational environment.
