2 Simulation in production and logistics Today, industrial production and logistics processes are characterized by a strong and often cross company interdependence and inter activity. The increasing complexity of production and logistics systems and short-term changes in the market require the fastest possible delivery of planning results in the highest quality possible. With the growing demand for planning accuracy and efficiency, the planning and improvement of procurement, production and distribution processes in performance, cost and usage perspective are only possible with suitable methods and tools. For many years now, simulation technology has been one of the most important methods for investigating dynamic systems. A great deal of investment in production and logistics is only made after validation by means of simulations. With integration into the concepts of the digital factory the role of simulation in industry has been strengthened once again.

3 Source: SimPlan The VDI had already recognized the relevance of simulation technology to industrial practice many years ago. For over two decades now, experts at the VDI have been working on the standardisation of simulation technology in production and logistics. In the guideline sub-committees of the expert technical committees FA 204 Modelling and simulation (headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sigrid Wenzel) and FA 205 Digital factory (headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Uwe Bracht) of the VDI Society Production and Logistics (VDI-GPL) practically oriented guidelines are being written about the use of simulation and the methods of the digital factory. The series of guidelines VDI 3633 document knowledge which stems from real experience and they provide practical information about the use of simulation technology in industry. A large number of companies use these guidelines for orientation purposes and apply them as a basis for their own operational processes and services. The idea of the planned series of guidelines VDI 4465 is to provide instructions for the procedure of modelling (production-related) logistical systems together with their associated processes and information flows.

4 The series of guidelines VDI 4499 expands the focus of modelling and simulating systems in logistics, material handling and production about concepts relating to the digital factory and digital factory operations. It discusses objectives, areas of application and benefits and deals with models and methods as well as questions of data management. In addition, specific practical information is given about introducing the digital factory and the accompanying organisational measures. One important additional aspect here is the ergonomic representation of humans in the digital factory. The quality of the guidelines in the VDI is ensured with the collaboration of experts from research and industry in the Guideline Committees. In the field of simulation, collaborations exist with ASIM (German Simulation Society) within the GI e.v. (German Association for Informatics) and with the VDA (German Association of the Automotive Industry). VDI Guidelines are trend-setting working documents for daily use. With regard to their assessment and evaluation criteria they provide well-founded bases for decision taking processes and represent benchmarks for unobjectionable technical proceeding. Therewith, VDI Guidelines provide practising engineers with the assurance to be in line with approved technical rules.
