NEW gtld Applying for and operating a new gtld NEW gtld CONSULTING AND REGISTRY SERVICES Are you Considering Applying for and Operating a new gtld? ICANN is expected to open the next application round in 2019/20, but it may come sooner! Page 1 / 14
Thomsen Trampedach has the experience from the first round. We can assist you with any task related to new gtlds. ICANN received 1930 applications for 1400 unique strings during the first gtld application window in More than 600 applications were for.brand TLDs. As of Autumn 2016 more than 1000 new gtlds have now launched including.brand TLDs such as.bmw,.emerck and.spiegel. These brands operate and control their own name space and can create as many domain names they wish, such as tv.dvag, plus.spiegel, next100.bmw or emerck. Consumers will learn that.brand TLDs are safe harbours where only the brand itself can be found. It is still too early to assess whether the 600 first-round.brand TLDs will become successful. Nonetheless, now is the time to begin to assess and discuss with your colleagues whether your company should apply for and operate your own.brand TLD. Analysing and deciding whether or not to apply for a.brand TLD takes some effort. This involves competitor analysis, risk assessment, feasibility studies, and a general understanding of the application process and the ICANN world, which you would enter, if you decide to run your own.brand TLD. Page 2 / 14
New to the ICANN world? Thomsen Trampedach will help you. Things to Consider Base your decision on facts Market analysis What are my competitors doing? What are big brands doing? Did other companies in my industry apply in 2012? How to apply What does it take to apply for and run a.brand TLD and what are the costs? Benefits Which benefits could be achieved and what are the potential risks of participating or of not participating in the next round? Timeline What would a timeline look like? Decision How do I gather and present data for our Go/No-Go decision? Applying and launching We assisted a dozen brands in the first round & we are now operating their.brand TLDs in compliance with ICANN policies. Page 3 / 14
gtld Services - What We Offer Planning Applying Launch & Operation PLANNING Facilitate Analysis and Preparations for Go/No-Go Decision Feasibility studies - Risk Analysis Will the investment pay off? Are we facing any risk of objections from third parties, governments, or ICANN? Are we in conflict with any third party TMs? Is our gtld string in conflict with any ISO Codes or geographical indicators, or with any International Governmental Organization (IGO) names? Could our string in foreign languages be interpreted as offensive to public morality and order? Would our string be interpreted as a sensitive or a generic string? Page 4 / 14
Concept of Use short term mid term long term (Roll out plan). How can we use our own.brand TLD? Should it only be used by us? Or should we allow subsidiaries, resellers, customers, and partners to register domain names in our TLD as well? How do we roll it out? And how will our own.brand TLD impact our current domain name and online branding strategy? Budgeting internal and external costs related to applying for and operating a.brand Go/No-Go Decision Project planning and management How much can we do on our own? How much do we have to outsource to partners? Define ownership within your organization Establish Project Group and identify internal Project Manager Decide on legal entity to apply Formulate Mission Statement of the new TLD Formulate the purpose and policy or concept of use for the new TLD Create Project Plan Analysis of objectives Risk Analysis Milestones Communication Plan Delegation of responsibilities Allocate Resources (Financial / HR) Negotiate with registry service providers (backend system), and WHOIS data escrow providers, registrars, and monitoring companies Gathering of supporting documents and data Applying for a new gtld is a timeconsuming and technical task. This is why we are here to assist you. Page 5 / 14
gtld Services - What We Offer Planning Applying Launch & Operation APPLYING The application process consists of the following key components, as described in ICANN s Applicant Guide Book General information about the applicant organization and the applied-for TLD Demonstration of external technical and operational capability Demonstration of internal technical and operational capability Demonstration of financial capability Page 6 / 14
TT will draft and gather supporting documents including but not limited to: List of directors and board members Copy of annual reports Letter of fund commitments Budgets (expected, worst, and best case scenarios) Internal cost allocation schemes IDN tables IT risk assessment plans Letter of support/non-objections from third parties Various technical documents provided by registry service providers All of Thomsen Trampedach s gtld clients by far exceeded the threshold for passing ICANN s evaluation in the 2012 round. A gtld application in the 2012 round typically consisted of 250 pages and around 50 supporting documents. Thomsen Trampedach will assist in drafting the application and all supporting documents, including all required policies and contracts such as Registration and use policies Anti-Abuse Policies DNSSEC policies Launch policies Premium name policies Terms and conditions Registry-Registrar agreements Guiding through evaluation and potential objections In the 2012 round, we successfully guided our gtld clients through the application process and also through unforeseen obstacles such as GAC advice (sensitive strings, closed generics), clarifying questions (enhanced security measurements), name collision occurrence management, geo-panel objections, legal rights objections, community priority objections and auctions. Registry Systems We can assist you in finding the right registry service provider to fit your needs. In the 2012 round we primarily worked with KSregistry. KSregistry offers a flexible, stable and secure gtld platform at a fair price. Page 7 / 14
