With its new Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) and Def Stan 23-09, the UK MOD has arguably been one of the most innovative and impactful defense procurement agencies (DPA) of any democratic nation. The UK MOD has raised the bar for system-of-systems integration management by initiating a fundamental shift in perspective regarding collaboration between DPAs and systems integrators (SIs). This new approach provides for the development of all future vehicles using a single, logically connected, cohesive and coherent architecture for maximized utility while enabling field command to derive the best logistically from military assets. IOA adoption also sets the stage for a more competitive procurement process that can only improve the economics of future vehicle development. The biggest savings will come in through life maintenance, upgrade cost reductions and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) simplification. GVA will create a market that is increasingly open for military vehicle components and sub-systems, which in turn will drive a more competitive market and lead to cost reductions. Esterline CODIS product portfolio is the widest equipment offering available today on the market, enabling allied nations and their SIs to adopt the General Vehicle Architecture, saving time and money for GVA insertion into their strategic Land Vehicle developments. The products have been GVA certified inside international programs driven by GVA architecture such as running programs of the Commonwealth of Nations. The next step forward is the NATO GVA standard of the MILVA. The MILVA Working Group has prepared the RATIFICATION DRAFT 1 document of the STANAG 4754 standard (NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture (NGVA) for Land Systems) for ratification by the NATO national staffs. The expected implementation states This STANAG is effective upon receipt and ready to be used by the implementing nations and NATO bodies. The partner nations are invited to adopt this STANAG. However, this approach resulted in exponential growth in complexity over time with the increased number of sub-systems on board. Problems with size, weight, power and cooling (SWaP-C) within the vehicle have also become persistent. In addition, such piecemeal, but tightly coupled integration would reduce flexibility when it comes to technology insertion and obsolescence management. The closed system design and interfaces complicated integration and usually led to a lock-in with the original supplier for downstream system maintenance, logistics and upgrades. The problems associated with bolt-on integration are illustrated in Figure 2. Figure 2: One screen per device bolt-on integration The Open Systems across the Land Environment approach has been introduced by the UK MOD under the LOSA acronym. Integration of safety critical and related systems and functions The implementation of all these requirements is on-going, and the ultimate step towards NGVA is the STANAG 4754 standard certification process and is under consideration to form a basis specifically for the NGVA Verification and Validation volume. Figure 3: Esterline GVA crew display on board the vehicle The GVA and NGVA standards are today adopted by more and more Defense Ministries as an essential requirement for adapting the mission systems on board the vehicles. Esterline is a pioneer in Human Machine Interface equipment on board the GVA and NGVA vehicles, providing Open System solutions to the different system and sub-systems integrators, enabling the required Interoperable Open Architecture with one unique HMI post. The time has arrived for sub-system integrators to deliver a sensor or a remotely controlled weapon station with an application running the Open Architecture onto a GVA/NGVA certified HMI, rather than providing their own HMI equipment.
